1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I have never tried layaway, i'd refer paying in full payment since layaway will make the wait even longer T^T

But i think this option makes it a lot easier to own a doll, for example, if there are limited doll that i really really want but don't have enough money to buy at the time, layaway is no doubt my best option ~

    2. I've only done layaway through friends. I've been thinking of doing one through a website but I haven't found a doll worth committing to recently :( although I do love the April story dolls!

    3. I like layaways. THey give you the opportunity to get something under a regulated budget. I wouldn't recommend layaway to people who are buying a certain doll on a whim. You have to be 100% sure that you really like it and that you have the determination to finish your terms so in the end, you don't lose anything.

    4. Thank god for layaway. Not that I've ever used it, but I like the concept. More much wallet-friendly that paying $800 all at once. I can delay gratification.

    5. In general I would not do a layaway. I'd rather save up till I have the full amount. That way if an emergency arises and I had to use my money for something else, I wouldn't have to worry about a missed payment or losing what I already put in, and I could just start saving up again where I left off.

The one exception would be if something was limited edition and I had to start a layaway to make sure one was held for me.

    6. I'm personally not a fan of layaway when attempting to get a pricey doll because I like to give the full payment from the beginning. I can't imagine being short for one of the months and not only losing the doll I want but the money I put down to get her in the first place.

    7. I like layaway because I'm not out a huge chunk of change all at once. It let's me balance my bills while still getting what I want for my hobbies. :3

Too many times, back when I was new to dolls and layaway was rarely an option, did I purchase flat out and leave myself hurting for money til payday, because maybe something broke on my car.

Of course I am more mature now than I was 9 years ago lol and layaway just helps me balance more. I use it even when I can just flat out buy, too bad I don't get my credit score updated for my success with them xD

    8. I love layaway. If that wasn't a thing, I wouldn't have been able to get one of my grail dolls (who just so happens to be on layaway), as she was re-released for 3 days only and my job is taking its sweet sweet time paying me. My credit card has a very low limit so I can't use it for doll purchases, so if I don't have the full amount on my Paypal, then layaway is my only option for this type of thing. My first doll I got with a layaway to avoid missing out on an event they had going on which allowed me to get her fullset for roughly the price my second doll would cost blank from the company. My second doll I ended up getting second hand, and I knew I would be able to afford to pay for her in full but wasn't sure when exactly as, once again, my job loves taking forever to pay me, so I asked for a layaway so I could put a down payment to hold her until they did (and then paid her off in what, I think a week?).

Of course if you can afford to pay for everything in full that's better, I think, but without layaway, I would probably have missed out on the opportunities to get all three of my girls and would maaaaybe have gotten one of them by now.

    9. Layaway is a lifesaver. Yeah the wait is rough, and ideally I would like to be able to pay in full right away... But I am a college student with a part-time job and that just isn't a possibility right now. Some tiny dolls I could pay in full if I save up and budget right, but if they are limited that puts me in hot water because waiting to save up runs the risk of the stock running out before I can place my order.

    10. Layaway is very practical during events! Buying a full SD doll is expensive, and stretching it out over 2-3 months makes it possible for me. Especially when your country's currency is weak and everything is in USD, then layaway is the only option I have.

& just like AutumnWyvern said, as a college student working 15-20 hours a week, paying over $600 (which turns out to be $900 CAD... T_T) in one go would be deadly to my fragile finances.

And to me, if I'll end up waiting 2-3 months for my doll anyway, I might as well take my time to pay him/her during those 2-3 months and get him/her as I'm done paying. ^^

    11. To be honest, I don't think I could go without layaway! I could save up, but most of the dolls I've found have been either through the secondhand market or they're a limited doll.

    12. I'm trying out layaway on my first bjd and it has been good so far. I think because it is being made and you have to wait anyway that I figured there is no rush to pay it in full. I don't see anything negative about layaway except the wait.

    13. Well, I only use layaway for limited dolls.
Not to all of those LE dolls tho, just some of them, when I don't have enough money to pay all at once. :sweat

When I'm not sure whether I can have enough money to finish my layaway, I just skip the dolls.
Layaway is only to get a doll that I'm already 100% sure I can finish it without problems. :3nodding:

    14. I have had NOTHING but wonderful experiences here in the doll community /knocks on wood. I have used layaway multiple times (I'm even doing one right now!) & have always had a great experience. Just do your homework-- check the seller's feedback, communicate with them openly & keep messages handy. If paying through Paypal, NEVER send the money through the friends/family/gift option-- you want to have your purchases protected!

    15. I'm too nervous to use it myself, so I usually save up and pay for it in one go. Layway is wonderful for people who prefer to do it bits at a time, so it's nice that it's a popular option for a lot of companies.

    16. Layaways are great <3 I can budget around a payment way easier than I can doling out the entire amount. Total hobby-saving measure for me!

    17. I love and hate Layaway. It's wonderful it helps in affording the doll that you could buy over time but not all at once. But it scared the crap out of me. I'm so scared I will lose my not so study job that I managed to keep for a year now that I don't want to do layaway. Even though I kept my job for a year my hours so so all over the place. Some weeks I work 20 hours some only 5 which makes me so nervous about layaway. I would rather buy the doll on credit and just pay the credit card back because it least then I know I get the doll and I don't have to worry about losing all of my payment and not getting the doll because I couldn't make one payment or I was short or something.

    18. I'm all about instant gratification, so I prefer paying for dolls all at once. It means less wait time for the doll to arrive. :)

    19. I like layaway and have used it a few times now. It helps me to budget and afford my dolls at the same time as I can plan ahead for the respective outgoings each month.

    20. I actually really love doing layaway at least from dealers like DDE, even when I have the full amount available to pay for the doll. It helps me with having to wait the production/shipping time anyways since it gives me something else to focus on during that time.
