1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. Layaway is great for me because it allows me to buy higher ticket items without breaking my budget.

    2. I like the option of layaway however I would most likely only do this for a well-known online store that has been around for a while or a collector/seller who has a lot of positive feedback unless I do a short layaway.

    3. Layaways are awesome! I usually don't like spending big chunks of money at once, so even if I have all the money for a doll I'll use layaway. That way I can pay on my doll while still paying other bills. Layaways are also great when I'm short on cash (being a college student that happens a lot unfortunately haha). It really allows me to afford my hobby :)

    4. I have been buying my dolls on layaway for ten plus years, They all have been worth the wait. I thank each and everyone the allowed me to get the dolls I wanted, and would have to settle for dolls, I was not crazy about just because of the lowerprice. I LOVE LAYAWAY!,,,,

    5. I'm currently buying a doll through layaway. I think it's a great way to purchase a doll as long as you have a steady income. Wouldn't do it if you don't have a steady source of income, though.

    6. I couldn't personally do layaway. I'm just one if those people who can't handle owing money, it stresses me out too much, but I can't certainly see the appeal.

    7. I would never do a layaway with just any random people. It's way to hard to protect yourself if the seller does not send the doll. I would love to do it with a company or deal, though. It's nice inputting smaller money monthly or so to get the doll

    8. I haven't used layaway personally, but I understand why it would be beneficial. Life is pretty unexpected and I find that when I'm saving up for anything there's usually something urgent that requires the funds, so layaway can be nice because it lets you get a doll without having to talk yourself out of it every time you get close. It's important to do things for yourself. :3nodding:

    9. I like layaway. Having to make a payment on a doll is a good deterrent from buying another one just a month later.

    10. For now, I don't like the idea of layaway. I reckon they're a huge help for small budgets, and really useful with limited dolls, but I feel very uncomfortable buying something when I technically can't afford it. You never know what can happen, and having something to pay every months would make me feel really stressed out I think. So at the moment, I only buy a doll if I have all the money for it.

    11. I can see where it's easy to bite off more than you can chew with layaway - I remember a problem transaction thread some years ago for a user who took on more than she could keep up with. That said, I think short layaways (2-3 months at most) are fantastic. Even if you can easily afford it on the spot, sometimes it's hard to justify dropping a large amount for a luxury item in one go. Breaking it up a bit sort of lessens the blow.

    12. I absolutely love layaway! It's how I get most of my dolls and I'm not dumb enough to put more than one doll on layaway at a time and over burden myself with payments. I don't always have between $400-$700 to just play around with and it lessens the blow of paying such a large amount right away. I don't like when people tell me that I can't afford a doll if I have to put it on layaway which I disagree with. I'll also note that I've bought many dolls right out but if a company offers layaway then I'll probably use it. ^_^

    13. So glad some people are rich enough to not have to bother with layaway. I'm not. If I want a limited doll or to take advantage of a great deal on the Marketplace (or a special offer from a company) then yep! Gotta do layaway. Plus I pay off layaways a lot better than I manage to NOT spend money in a savings account....

    14. I personally prefer to buy a doll through a layaway process. That way there is a tiny bit of wiggle room in terms of saving up for the doll. I have been able to buy dolls in one go from the company but it's always a scramble to re-organize my budget. With the monthly payments I can plan better.

Another great thing about layaways are that they help lessen the waiting time for me. Because I'm still actively trying to get the doll. It is suuuuuper stressful if my budget is really tight and I still have a layaway but planning ahead is the key.

I use Mint on Card for my layaway purchases and I love the communication they have. With their system it's on you to tell them to charge your card. They will send you email notifications of when your payment is due and the status of your items.

    15. Layaway's for limited dolls is a great thing, since not too many people have that much money laying around that they can pour out in one huge chunk, so in order to guarantee that they get said doll, it is much easier to pay a smaller amount every month before the doll goes out of stock forever! There are problems that can occur during a layaway like not being able to pay that month's chunk, but as long as the person knows that they will have that much money each month, I say it's a wonderful service.
Though, when it comes to stock dolls or extra parts, I find it easier to just pay for it all in one go. But, of course, it's all up to personal preference and what your financial situation calls for.

    16. I can buy the dolls only in installments because of the small salary. Glory to those firms that have installments)

    17. I usually save up. I think I only did layaway once, and that's because the doll was a little under twice my credit cards limit (first one I got, low limit), so I had to pay the max, wait for it to go through, pay it off, wait for that, then pay them the remaining balance.

    18. I think it's a good option to have if you want a doll but don't wanna get distracted and spend the money. Like if you are just saving up and have all that money there... You could totally spend it on something else. Layaway would really help motivate you. But TBH I prefer to save up anyways, just because it doesn't take very long for me to save up. I'll probably do a layaway sooner or later though.

    19. I have not used it yet, but I think layaway is something I will use in the future. I can schedule it in to be paid with my normal bills and depending on if you are ordering from a private seller/a company you may be waiting that long to receive your doll anyway.

    20. I like treating large purchases as a treat for myself when I manage to save up the money for them so I personally lean away from layaways, but they look like a good option for limited dolls if you don't have the money ready but know you will in the future!
