1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I would rather save up. Besides, it is already far too long waiting one, two or even more months till the BJD is made.
Is you use layaway, it adds even more time of waiting. I've already spent nearly 2 months waiting for my next doll and during all this time, I had a variety of thoughts from ''how wonderful it will be to get it'' to ''it's so much money, I'm having this and that happening this month, I should not have spent all that money on the doll''.
Buying and getting at once (or at least as soon as possible) is far much better!
I don't mind if I start saving and the doll is sold out till I can actually buy it. If I can't, well, nobody's that rich. I can be happy enough with what I have already.

    2. Layaway can be a very helpful tool for those who, even if they have the funds to purchase a doll immediately, can instead pay off their doll slowly without dipping hard into savings or home-based funds. What this also does for others is allows them to safely budget out month-by-month what they can afford. Is your doll a high priced bit? Layaway! In the downtime, you can much more easily prepare yourself for when your doll arrives (without chopping your wallet in two)

    3. Layaway is the superior option, especially since not all molds are available for regular sales afterward.
It's also easier for budgeting. Instead of basically making an "emergency fund" sized payment, you can split it up into more manageable purchase sizes.

Honestly, companies that don't let me split up the payment for a $400+ doll make me rethink purchasing from them.

    4. Honestly, it depends! For super expensive dolls, layaway seems like an excellent option; I don't have a spare $1000 laying around, but for four months I can reasonably set aside $250. It works for limited purchases as well, since I can still make sure I've got the doll ordered without worrying about having the full amount at the time. I know how much the layaway is going to be, and when I have to have the money ready, and I have a month to set it all aside; so, that works pretty well I think!

From figure collecting, I'm already pretty used to long waits (6 months to a year or more), so the extra time for dolls doesn't bother me too much when they are as pricy as they are. That said, if I just happen to have the money to pay for a doll all at once, and I was really wanting it, I would probably pay full price right away. 8'D

    5. I think there are very few cases when it should be used. I would never buy a doll I didn't already have the money for, but I have used layaway to spread out the payments and make it easier on my mind and wallet. But it is a BAD idea to buy anything if you don't already have the money. It's a risk, and not a good idea to risk something so expensive or lovely.

    6. Honestly since the only way I could ever afford the dolls I really want is by paying through Layaway, I'm really glad it's an option through most sellers. I don't make enough money to reasonably afford shelling out $1000 at once, but I can definitely pay them a couple hundred spaced out through payments. So for me I think it's a really positive thing. :) I would rather people be able to somehow afford the doll they really want than to have to settle for something less just because they can't afford a huge price tag right from the get-go.

    7. I appreciate layaway a lot. While I'm saving for a doll I may end up spending some money here and there because I see so much money in the bank. If I have layaway then I can only spend so much on other things. Plus it's really helpful for things that are limited. It's one thing if the dolls is available for months, but when I see a doll I want only available for a week or so I really appreciate layaway. It gives more people a chance.

    8. I have never used layaway to buy anything before and I never plan to. I think it would confuse me with all the keep up dates as well as the value I place on the doll.
I don't have a store or anything but I also would not want to sell anything at a price that would deem layaway possible as it could be a hassle to keep up with. Maybe if it was someone I can trust.

    9. Layaway is basically the only way I could afford these dolls. I usually use Mint on Card and spread the payments out over 6 months which is about the period of when I would receive said doll. So, a $600 doll would cost me about $100 a month. I love it

    10. I personally prefer to save up for my dolls and purchase them in one hit, just so I know that they're paid for and I don't have to worry about coming into financial trouble when trying to adhere to payments. That being said though, I have been considering putting a Raccoon Doll Intimate Nana on layaway, as she's a bit more expensive than what I would comfortably normally spend in one hit~ :XD:

    11. Layaway is a wonderful tool provided you can budget appropriately and make payments on time.

I have bought a few dolls on layaway, especially when I know the company's production time is a little slow, but I always try to pay it as soon as possible.

    12. Layaway is the best option for anybody who is a collector in any hobby, but buying all at once can be good for gift giving.

    13. My first doll I've done a layaway. It helps because I can budget better, instead of paying a huge sum up front

    14. Layaway is my only chance to have limited edition doll what i fall in love. Most of them is extremely over budget (maybe cause I really bad in money save).
      So I really appreciate it!

    15. Layaway is a great option for when you can't afford to buy a doll all at once. The longer, the better, too.

    16. I love layaways! ^3^ I think it's nice when a seller does offer a layaway too. For me, it helps me a lot since I am able to buy the doll I want especially during times that I also need to pay for things such as electricity bills etc and even emergency bills (hospitalization etc) ^^, Two my my full dolls were payed via layaway ^_^ and like the rest, I find it easier to save a small budget each month rather than saving up for a few months since I am a compulsive spender >3<

    17. I think that layaways can be great if you struggle to save. The problem for me is that I suck at saving *and* I hate having to wait for things. And living in Middle Earth means I spend a lot of time waiting for things anyway, so a layaway would make it worse. :/

    18. I prefer layaways. It gives me the opportunity to get dolls I couldn't afford or when saving is not an option. I always make sure I can pay each payment without a trouble. I wish there was more options to get a layaway easily tho I understand that some people are not trustworthy (payments always late, or just quitting without paying) so not everyone is willing to give this option which I do respect.

    19. I've done two layaways now, and I prefer them. Most of the time I have a large chunk of the total cost saved up before I make my order but doing a layaway allows me to have extra funds in case life goes haywire. Plus, you can always pay off your layaway early if you have extra money - I've done that before...and the wait times are the same if you're doing a 3-6 month payment plan anyways.

    20. I think layaway is fine especially with new buyers. It could also come in handy if you see a doll you want and it's a custom so you won't be able to get it. Like what if you have some of the money and don't want it to be sold? Putting it in layaway is a nice option then.
