Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. Layaway is a gift from the gods. Without it, I probably wouldn't have the dolls I do. XD I don't make enough to have tons of money all at once, but I do make enough to make smaller payments periodically which is great. :3 I always make sure I can absolutely pull off a Layaway and keep it short before going in and purchasing, so I don't worry too much. ^^

    2. Hello ^^
I think layway is really nice , especially for limited doll , dreamdoll
Because maybe It's hard to find a lot of money early .
For my MD soom I was paid with a layaway and I doesn't have any problem .
But I think when we buy with layaway , we must be sure we can paid all ^^
For me , layaway is a good thing

    3. I've never purchased a doll on layaway, but given the cost of some dolls and the limited amount of money people may have at any given tme, I think layaway is a good thing. I agree with nabikidoll though. If someone is going to purchase on layaway, they should be sure they're going to be able to pay it all.

    4. I like layaways if not for a simple reason: I always feel horribly nervous if I have to send a huge amount of money in one payment. With layaway I send smaller sums and (usually) get feedback promptly whether the money has arrived or not.

    5. It startles me how some people can lose a whole lot of money if they don't make a payment... If you're buying a doll from the marketplace, the doll is already there so it's not like you're paying for any labor or resources. So if you're paying for a doll in increments and you miss a payment or can't finish the payments off, why can't you get a refund? You can end up losing hundreds of dollars that way and end up with nothing from the way I understand it... That part just kind of weirds me out. Otherwise, it really is a great thing for people who need to spread their payments out. I, myself, save up so that I don't have to worry about payments down the road. But I'd probably participate in a layaway if there was something I REALLY wanted to get my paws on. _xB

    6. I think its quie convenient, but something i'd only do with the company, not buying second hand on the mp. I don't trust people enough and if there's an issue, you could lose the money from your early payments due to paypal's policies on that stuff.

    7. I think I rather just use a credit card and get it right away.

    8. I expect it generally comes down to the fact that many/most people are selling the doll because they need the money. As such, it's likely that the money from the last month's payment has already been long spent. One could argue that the seller shouldn't "count their chickens before they hatch," as the saying goes, but it still seems unreasonable to expect that the seller should set that money aside for months at a time (however long the layaway lasts) and be ready to refund it all in case the buyer should flake out at the last minute. If the money's already gone, it would suddenly put the seller in a bad position to owe money unexpectedly. They may be able to find another buyer and get the funds again, but it can take a long time to find another buyer for some dolls and the seller may even be put into a position to drop their asking price.

If I was ever to sell anything, I'd probably be inclined to refund the previous payments to someone who came on hard times, but I can absolutely see why sellers set that rule in place to protect themselves.

    9. I'm glad that some companies offer layaway because not everyone can afford to spend $500+ at once. I also love the fact that companies such as Soom and Iplehouse accept layaway for their limited dolls :) they make many people happy with this option of gold!! the problem is not "layaway" per se but the people who are not responsible with their payments or back out at the last minute.

    10. i purchase dolls in the market place on layaway. I think its a great option for both parties as long as you know you can pay. its a good way to get limited or hard to get dolls. and i like to pay them off early if i can. Most sellers are wonderful to deal with. Some are even better to work with than the companies lol! I would love to reach through the screen and hug some of them :)

    11. i agree with this - sure, when you're paying off a doll that is in stock/just sitting there you're not paying for labour or anything, but you've effectively taken the doll off the market. if you flake out £200 in & demand everything refunded, the seller would then have to try & sell the doll again & there may have been 5 buyers interested at the time who have all since bought other dolls & the seller will be stuck with a wasted couple of months & a doll that now isn't selling.

it also goes hand in hand with the fact that if you take the doll off the market with a layaway, it's a gesture of good faith that the seller is offering you an extended period of time to pay - they still need to eat/run their business/whatever so they need to feed the money immediately into other things, just as if the doll had been purchased flat-out with cash.

    12. I think that layaway is amazing. It's going to be the way I purchase dolls, because I am not made of money. If I had all the money at once, that would be great too,but layaway gives people a lot more options when it comes to getting their dream doll.

Sometimes by the time you save up for something, it's already gone! I'd be crushed if I had fallen in love with a doll and that happened. So much work all for nothing. I honestly think if more doll companies and individual sellers offered the option of layaway, they would make more money/sales because you're opening a new level of affordability to the average person, which I REALLY appreciate!

    13. 1) Let's keep in mind that if you cancel a layaway you should NOT lose your money. Check the terms of the website before you do a layaway, but usually all you should lose is your deposit (around 10%) the rest should be refunded to you.

      2) It is definitely safer to save the money yourself first. If you feel like you would have trouble saving the money, you would probably have trouble making your repayments also.

      3) The best use of layaway is as I am about to use it!
I want an Iple House doll, but only need her by Christmas. The doll is in a limited event period which means that she has the option for limited clothing sets that I would dearly love to have and needs to be ordered by Sept 2. Because I don't need her quickly and money is tight (but I know I could scrape the money together if I had to) paying her off over 3 months is a fantastic idea for me, especially as I have been told she will ship quickly after that 3 months and production starts on the doll before you have finished paying her off.

    14. I think it's wonderful, but yeah, not for me. I'll save up the money and skimp on the hassle. I notice most layaway plans involve automatic debits, and like, what if I forget one month and don't have any money? Or what if something happens and it takes me longer than the agreed time? That happened to a friend of mine, and she ended up being like $100 in the whole and Denver Doll didn't do sh!$ about it. Scary. No thanks, but kudos to those it works for!

    15. I've purchased dolls using layaway, but only through Denver Dolls Emporium. I don't think I'd ever be brave and trusting enough to purchase from the second-hand market via layaway because I guess I read too many horror stories about sellers disappearing with the deposit & payments made thus far. And yet...I've offered people to purchase dolls I was selling via layaway. It may seem like a double standard I have, but it's just not in me to make off with people's money.

I like that layaway offers buyers a way to space out payments so that they're not forking over a huge amount all at once. In some cases, it's the only way some people will be able to budget for their dolls.

    16. I'm the type to panic and I usually wait until I can pay in full upfront, just in case something goes wrong at my end and I can't make a payment for whatever reason. But layaway is a godsend when you find the perfect doll/shoes/whatever and you *know* you'll have enough, but not just yet. I bought my elfdoll on a short layway from a seller on DOA rather than wait and risk her being bought by someone else.

So, yeah, in conclusion - not something I normally do, but can make all the difference between getting hold of something you really want and, er, not.

    17. I'm planning to totally avoid layaway. I know it could be helpful since I don't have the money for dolls right this second but I'm paranoid that they're be some sort of mistake in the system or I won't finish in time so I'm saving so I can buy my first girl all in one go.

    18. I prefer to save up until I have all the money I need. It's because I'm really bad at math and like to keep anything money related as simple as possible to avoid a financial mishap.

The good thing about saving up: it's a test for me to see how much I want the doll I intend to buy. If I can't muster up the patience to save up, it's simply not the one for me.

    19. I love the idea of layaway! Even though I am good at saving money life's little emergencies always seem to pop up and the first thing that starts suffering is my doll funds so if I was able to get a doll via layaway that couldn't happen! The money would be gone and too a much more worthy cause.

    20. I always buy clothes and accessories along with a doll. So, I appreciate layaway being a nice way to space out those payments of which each one on their own can be very expensive. However, I prefer to pay in full when I can.
