It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I love layaway. It gives me the option to pay for my doll without milking myself dry at all once.

    2. I don't like to use layaway and except for once, I haven't (and that was a layaway of less than a week while I waited for a payment to me to clear).

I'd much rather save up all my money and pay for a doll all at once than be locked into a layaway and risk losing a deposit if something goes wrong. If I can't pay for the doll right now, I can't really afford it. It LOOKS like I can afford it now, but what if something goes wrong? If my computer drops dead I'll need to pay to repair it or buy a new one, because I can't work without it. If I'm in an accident or get ill, I may suddenly have to use the entirety of my "discretionary" doll budget on medical bills.

Heck, it doesn't even have to be emergencies. This spring I dropped my phone in a toilet. It ended up being fine, but if it hadn't I'd definitely rather have paid for a new smartphone than a new doll. If I'd had a doll on layaway that wouldn't have been an option.

I'm just not comfortable committing myself to a non-necessity purchase like a doll when I don't have the money in hand.

    3. Layaway is a lifesaver. :sweat That's how I got most of my dolls; it really saves you money.

    4. I never put anything on layaway. I only buy when I can afford to pay in a single payment.

    5. I've never done layaway through a company. If I'm buying a doll new I try to save so I can buy it outright but I know a lot of people like this option. I do like to use and allow people to use layaway for secondhand dolls, though. I only ever have one doll on layaway at a time; if I had more doll money, I'd pay off the first doll faster. It is nice for a doll to go to a home where someone wants it, even if it takes them longer to pay for it. It is also the only way I got some of my most favorite dolls.

    6. I love layaways, if it were'nt for those wonderful understanding sellers that allow layaways, I would not be able to be a collector of these wonderful dolls. Layaways allow you to know that you are getting that doll for sure, if you pay on time and finish payments. Saving for a doll, well that doll may be sold out or discountinued, and the great spirit always knows when you have a little something set aside for car repairs.

    7. For me layaway is just like a spending plan, it make me much easier to organize my monthly spending~ XD

    8. I think it definitely depends on your financial situation (like, if it's really unstable it's probably best to save up and pay all at once!)
For me, I think layaway is excellent, if for nothing else but avoiding the guilt I get from spending a huge sum of money on a doll P: paying in $50 increments is a LOT easier to justify than dropping $200 all at once, even if it's the same amount! I also have terrible impulse buying habits after I reach a certain amount of "fun money", even if I'm saving it up @_@ so it's easier to save small amounts and spend them on a layaway than it is to save up a whole bunch.

    9. This is not a good idea, and many times installment is more expensive, need to spend extra money

    10. While I have no experience with layaway in any form, I don't think I'd ever do it- I'm extremely impatient, lose interest quickly (in that I may find another doll that I want more in the time I'm paying for the first one), and my financial situation tends to be unstable so paying all at once is my best bet. I understand that for some people that don't have all the money necessary to buy a doll and don't want to lose out on it, it's the best option, but not for me.

    11. I am a self-confessed Layaway Junkie. Most of my dolls are being adopted secondhand, and they're all on layaway. It's a wonderful thing if you don't have access to the full amount at once, or if you have other priorities (food, rent, utilities bills) but still have enough money to cover for the monthly payments for the doll.

I see layaway as a godsend to people like me who are actually seeking their "grail dolls" which are often priced higher than they originally cost. :)

    12. I love to pay my dolls all at once. And when it comes to basic dolls I do so.
But with LE it's nearly impossible because they are expensive and just available for a short time which makes it impossible to save up for them. So layaway is the perfect option for limited dolls. Of course you should only do layaway when you definitely have enough money every months to pay the installments. There is no need to go into dept for a doll.

    13. I... kind of abuse layaway, hahaha. Without it, I'd probably not ever be able to get the dolls I truly love. I love that it makes these dolls more accessible, especially with the hobby being so expensive, but I know too well how easy it is to get carried away. I suppose in the end, it's an amazing option to have, as long as one can be responsible about it.

    14. Layaway is amazing when you actually have the intentions of paying it off. But if someone goes into the layaway knowing that they will probably not be able to pay it off/doesn't want to, then it becomes problematic. Overall, I think it's good; more companies should offer it.

    15. I currently have a doll on layaway but each time the payment is due, something ALWAYS happens to a point where I fear I cant continue paying for him [and since he's a pre-order, once I cancel I cant get a refund at all]. I'm just two payments away before he becomes mine but...I had to beg the layaway people from Mint on Card to give me a week extra to get some money [paycheck coming in this week]. But with my bills piling up, I fear the worst [again].

Because of this, I don't want to do layaway ever again. I'd rather save up my money to buy fully and not have to worry about it anymore. >___<

    16. I think layaway is a heaven :)It allows you to order a dream doll even if you do not have available funds right away, so I love it
However there is a bad side too-you ll have to wait longer with layaway to get your bjd

    17. i've only used layaway once before, and that was on my DZ lotus from mintoncard...the main reason i used layaway was because they had a discount on her and i didn't know how they were going to take off the discount, before or after check out...but it worked out really nicely and the people who handled it were really nice...

    18. I haven't used layaway prior to this year because I don't like owing money and because I don't want to have to worry about one extra bill. I was of the mindset that if I can't afford to buy a doll, then I shouldn't be buying one at all.

While all of the above still remains true, this year I found that I really like layaway for controlling when a doll arrives. For example, earlier this year, a few releases I was interested in happened around the same time. I don't like too many dolls arriving all at once, so I opted to use layaway in order to have some control of when each doll arrives. I paid one of the dolls off right away, another two months later and yet others about four months later (maximum length layaway the company offered). The doll I paid off right away arrived first, the doll I paid off two months later arrived about a month afterwards and the dolls I used extended layaway for were just paid off two weeks ago, so I don't expect them until about October. If layaway wasn't an option, they'd all probably arrive at the same time and overwhelm me.

      I'm definitely a very happy layaway-using consumer!

    19. I have never used layaway for any purchase but I think they are wonderful tools! Esp when your dream doll appears when you are as dry as a well. Its very similar to interest-free instalment plans they have in departmental stores anyway. Its less painful to pay via layaway than a one single payment.

    20. This is all true lay-a-way is a life saver when it comes to dolls. I don't have a credit card so i now i'm not going into debt for any of my dolls. and it means i can afford to own the ones i do!
