1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I wouldn't be able to afford any dolls if it weren't for layaway! I really wish more companies offered layaway or extended the layaways they do offer since an awful lot of dolly folk rely on it to bring their dollies home <3

    2. At first i thought that layaway is wonderful. But now, paying it, i don't know. i'm so nervous willing to get the doll as soon as possible. It is easier for me to borrow lot of money from my friends (home bank - money without %) and then, waiting while the doll is being processed, return money. Really i don't like the system of preordering. i think it will be ok to pay after your order is ready for shipping to you.

    3. Love it.....my hubby just won't let me save up for anything....he's much more comfortable with me taking out a long layaway.

    4. Didi was the only one I ever payed for upfront. All my rest were layaway. Looking back, I don't know how I was able to stand the wait for him. While doing the layaway for the others, I knew once that final payment was made, they'd be shipped out. I don't know now if I could stand paying in full and just waiting around with all the scary - what ifs? - going through my head.

In fact, for the lay-away for Meigui, Mogu, and Qing, I wrote when they weren't shipped a couple days after the final payment. :sweat It was because Qing hadn't arrived yet, so they offered to send the rest of the layaway - which I accepted. I didn't even wait a full month for her to come in, and even that was hard on me.

I guess it's less anxiety for me to do layaway. X# of payments = Doll comes home. Maybe it gives my mind the illusion of some control. LOL. I'm just really glad it's an option.

    5. I think layaway is really helpful and useful. Sometimes it's too heavy to pay the dolls fully at once.

But it's hard to wait. I would really love if the doll companys accept split it on creditcard...it's so much easier and you wouldn't have to wait so much and get so anxious. I don't understand why it's not possible

    6. I have a love/hate relationship with layaway. I love it because it makes dolls that I want but are slightly more expensive easier to afford with payment installments. But at the same time I'm an impatient so-and-so. I've put two dolls on layaway so far, both through DDE. The first one I got tired of waiting too quickly and ended up paying her off not even a month after the first payment. The second one I was a little bit better at waiting through, making it past the third payment before paying off the remaining balance.

    7. I've only ever used layaways twice out of 30+ dolls, I think... once when I thought I had less money saved than I had (a happy mistake ^^).... once when it was a serious Cadillac-model repaint whose bidding-war had ended in the thousands, and I had to pay up during Christmastime when things are tight already (bless Satoko Ohno for offering layaways at all). It is nice to have the option not to cripple your finances all at once.

But those were occasions where I just didn't want to spend the full price at once.... I don't think I'd ever enter into a layaway if I didn't truly have the money to back it up. If an emergency ever came up, I wouldn't want to have that unpaid obligation hanging over me.

So generally no, I don't use layaways, because I'd much rather pay everything off in one go & have done with it.

    8. i think layaway is good for people to get the limited edition doll without having to fork out all there savings at once!! but im never like that because i always have the believe of "the sooner i pay in full the sooner i get my doll" and i am nervous when it comes to "payment" types when we are talking about serious moolah

    9. I am not to sure that I understand you. Or what you are trying to say. Yes it would be nice if we could pay for our dolls when they are ready to ship. But you should know by now that, that is not how it works. Either you pay in full, or you do a layaway. Personally I love the layaway. It allows me to order more than one or two dolls at a time. It also helps me with the long wait for my doll to be made. By the time my layaway is payed off my dolls are ready to come home. I will do a layaway even if I have the money to pay in full. I just don't like the idea of them having such a large some of my money while I wait 3 to 6 moths for my dolls.

    10. Sorry paying in full does not get the doll to you any sooner.

    11. I would never begin a layaway for a doll that I had a feeling I might never be able to finish paying for. That's not what the layaway system is intended for, for people to just pay a buck here and there when they save a penny and have one to spare every now and again. They're regulated payments set up for people with steady income that just has to wait until their next paycheck for the next payment to be made. It's a very good system. It's much better than putting something on a credit card, where you'll be charged interest as you pay it off.

    12. I love layaways because they somehow magically make waits seem shorter. I only do them with things I know I'm going to have a bit of a wait for because of this. If something's in stock, however? I (mostly) tend to lay down the whole price right then and there. I'm not worried about not being able to pay for these things at one point as I often already have the money set aside, I just...like paying with layaway when things aren't going to be there for a while? It's a weird habit of mine.

    13. You are right. But. There are some situations, when while you paying layaway your computer can break down or mobile or problems with your or your relatives' health happen. Life is unpretictable, you know. Yesterday i paid the last part of my layaway. I'll never take lataway again! Its too heavy for my nerv system. Also there is a possibility that i change my mind about the doll after paying two thirds of the layaway.

    14. This is why you never take a layaway thats a stretch for your finances. I always take a longer time then I can afford to, and as a result, 95% of the time, I pay off the doll early.

    15. I usually don't do layaway. If I did, I'd have more dolls than I can afford, kinda. I did layaway once, I think, with a doll-head and right now, I'm paying off a body I got from a friend in three small payments. Not doing layaway really helps with not getting more dolls than I should.

Plus, with layaways on the Marketplace, you'll often find "three payments, finished within four weeks". Erm. Yes. Basically, for me, that means "pay the whole sum now or don't get the doll". I don't know about the U.S. or other countries but here in Germany, we get monthly payment, not weekly paychecks (as I got in New Zealand, e.g.). So that basically means unless a layaway allows for at least 60 days to complete, I can't take it, unless I can pay the whole sum up front ... (which saves me from even more doll-purchases) (At the end of the month, I won't have the money left and at the beginning of the month, it's too late to start paying to finish within four weeks cos at the end of the month ... see start of this sentence.)

    16. I love layaway. I wasn't able to get my K&G Katrina doll without it!

    17. I can understand how layaway lowers the burden of having to pay a lot of money in one go, and how psychologically say, 600, can be easier done and feel less stressfull on the finances when it is paid in chunks of 150USD. That said, there are times when it makes me wonder. I heard a women entering a layaway of a year for a 240 doll. This was not to comfortably stretch finances but because she otherwise couldn't afford it.
I'm not one of those people who says this hobby is for people with money only because I think it can be done cheap(ish), and it generally holds such meaning for people it makes me sick when people judge like that (yes non-rich people can or should have nice things too). That said, if you need a layaway for 20USD a month to afford a doll then you are also going to have a problem when an emergency arises and you need that money but cannot access it. Saving up seems to be so much wiser then, especially because you have little money. If something happens the money is still there.

For myself I don't think I will ever use it because I don't like the idea of having these extra financial commitments. I'm happiest when I've done my part and the ball is in the other court. Maybe if there's a must-have LE doll-emergency, but if it's not a limited and I have to wait for the doll anyway then saving up is better as paying off imo.

    18. I think they are a great idea, my first seven dolls were paid in full and it's a killer, now I tried to put them all on three month layaway. I somehow seems to take quicker to save. Paying a doll in full has sometimes taken me a year to save up, once to order is in you know you have to make those payments and be confident you can afford it each month.

    19. I haven't used it but I think it's a good idea. Kind of goes hand in hand with them usually shipping the doll once you make your last payment.

    20. Layaway helps me stretch my funds for the really big purchases. For those, I don't like to pay all in one go because it always makes me feel like there's a giant hole in my account lmao. However, if it's below a certain amount I don't usually feel the need to drag it out with a layaway plan.

To me, layaway is one of those things where it's right for some people but not for others. Depends on how stable your source of income is along with how large the purchase is.
