1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I think Layaway is awesome, and definitely a feature I will use in the future. I'd just make sure it's a reputable seller. :) I didn't use it before, but I probably should have. Impatience is my downfall.

    2. Layways are a great payment plan but I personally perfer to have all the money ready before I buy a doll. I have missed out on a lot of awesome limited and awesomes deals that way. But when i buy a doll Its completely mine and I can expect them start making it right away rather then say to myself just three more montehs and he or she is mine

    3. I'm planning to get my next doll on layaway! Really looking forward to making affordable payments for a few months and then...dolly! No big, painful money throwing explosions and feelings of slight regret. I'm a saver and penny-pincher at heart, so even when I am 100% certain I'm spending money on something I will not regret, any large purchases just make me cringe.

    4. I have my first layaway as opposed to buying the first two full chunk... it's a lifesaver at the moment. I'm very much broke right now but I had JUST enough extra to slap the first payment down for a 3 month layaway... Just enough might even be pushing it to be honest. XD He was the literal LAST one of a limited available that I could find.. and you have no idea how sure I am that I wanted that one... Right now I'm thanking god that layaway exists lol. I'm certain as far as certainty goes that my cash will be back to normal by next month, and I don't plan on missing those payments. I think I'll throw a crying tantrum if that happened. X D In the future though, even when I have a lot more money saved up... (if i don't buy a hundred dolls on the way to the 'future'.. gah.) I think layaway is a good option overall... your not paying less, but it's gradual. Even with a lot of money at once, you spend slower, and if I didn't have to sit and think "do i wanna wait 5 months for this...? Is this worth 50 dollars a month or more to me?" I'd be broke forever.

    5. I don't use layaway unless I already have more than half the doll's price in my hand, that way I pay half upfront and pay the rest in smaller amounts, something that fits my balance each month. I find this eliminates my worries of not being able to pay it off.

    6. I'm so grateful, that layaways exists. If not I would not have such a big collection of dolls.
I can't save money at all. I'll end up spending it on outfits, eyes, wigs or shoes instead, but if I have a layaway, I'll never use the money for something else, because I know it's not really my money.
I can see why some people will find it risky to do a layaway, but I don't fear so much. I'm not in a position to loose my income easily, so unless something extreme happens, I'll probably be able to pay.

    7. To me, its just like credit - if youre smart about it, it will pay off big time. If you put too much items on layaway, you are just digging yourself a hole. I dont think i would ever fathom owning a doll unless it went through layaway

    8. I love layaway! There have been several limited dolls that I would not have been able to get without a layaway plan, so its nice to make smaller payments and not miss out or pay much higher prices in the secondary market.

I am like Akatsuki in the fact it is easier for me to make a layaway payment than to save up the money. I keep joking that I will never get a basic doll because I keep trying to save up for one and not do a layaway (cause if an expensive limited comes along that I want I do not want my free money to be going towards a layaway on a basic doll).

    9. I always try to save up before buying. But if there was ever a limited sculpt I absolutely fell in love with yet couldn't afford, I would definitely use a layaway.

    10. I don't like layaway in any circumstance (not just dolls) because I always think of it as a line of private and unsecured credit. I don't buy dolls on layaway or with payment plans--I prefer to save and make my payment in full. It helps me to live within my means rather than try to buy things I can't actually afford.

    11. Probably because in essence it is! ;)

I'm all in favour of whatever makes the most sense for the companies to lure in more buyers and therefore stay in business. Since there's clearly demand for it, I'm glad that people are given the option. That said, I always raise an eyebrow at people who claim that they don't buy anything on credit or that they don't have any debt when they're also talking about paying off something on layaway, because that strikes me as creating a fiction about what's actually going on. But then other people's personal finance is none of my business, so hey. :)

    12. I don't think I would ever use layaway, simply because if I don't have the money now, I shouldn't be buying a doll.
I would save up and buy the doll right away. That way, less waiting in the long run.

    13. I think it's a good idea for those who may not have all the money up top to pay. For me personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it. It kind of drags out the wait for the doll, like TheMysticDragon said, and if it's too long, I may change my mind about it later. I'd rather just pay up front in full, or save up till I can afford it.

    14. Layaway has been a lifesaver for me. I do, however, prefer to do layaway with American dealers than the companies themselves. I almost solely work with Mint On Card, Inc. unless they don't carry the company I am looking to buy from. But I have also never had any issues with layaway from doll companies, but I have only ever done layaway with Soom and Iplehouse, which has really big reputations.

    15. I think it's good if you're employed and have a form of income so that you can keep doing layaway. But, even if I had a job, I think I would still prefer to just save up and pay in full. That way the process would be out of the way and I could just get my doll shipped out. I don't like the pressure of having a deadline for payments and hoping I'll have the money on time, even if they're in smaller quantities.

    16. Saving up simply does not work with me! Things always come up which I have to pay for so i prefer layway and i allocate money for the doll as i would a bill ie. something i have to pay for - no option otherwise. its worked for me that way twice. also, i think some people that get a regular income would prefer this method since they have the money coming in regularly and pay off the layway with each paycheck.

    17. I don't mind layaway. I might use it one day in the future but I prefer paying everything upfront.

    18. I think they're great. I just entered into my first layaway a week ago. I fell in love with DZ Annie but getting her with all her stuff and faceup made me kinda sick to my stomach. But with layaway I can break it up into 6 months from MoC and it's nothing. It's like buying an extra tank of gas a month. I'll probably do like others have mentioned and pay off her remaining balance when she's arrived stateside and is ready to ship to me. DZ has a long waiting period and I just couldn't wait much longer for Jack lol

    19. I've dealt with both, and i like dealing ith the companies here. some of them are real nice about it.
FF$D is one of the best Iris lets you have up to a year to pay on some of the real expensive ones
like the dollmore Lusions. I plan to get the newest one named Lillia this coming year and Trinity after that.

    20. I love the idea of layaway, although I haven't done it yet. I tend to pay upfront, but layaway makes life easier and keeps your checkbook happy.
