It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I love layaway. It's really helpful and almost exciting to know that I have a doll or what-not on it's way and that paying it off helps with the wait (especially if it's from the company itself and the wait is long already)

    2. My twins were both layaway purchased here in the marketplace. I think it's wonderful but understand how some can be put off by accepting small payments compared to total complete payment. My third doll was a one payment purchase, again second hand here in the marketplace. Super quick transaction and I didn't have to wait a month to have her.

    3. I haven't used layaway for a doll yet, but as someone whose parents used layaway when we were young to get us all our Christmas gifts and whatnot I really am thankful for it and think while it worked for us may not for others. But I know it's different when you're dealing with an individual seller...I'd be a little worried on both ends.

    4. i wouldn't be able to buy any dolls if they don't offer layaway... Y.Y

    5. I love layaway. I don't use it often, but if there's a doll I want that I couldn't possibly afford to fork over the cash in a single payment - particularly a limited doll with a limited purchase period - it really comes in handy. I bought two Soom limiteds that way, and have one on layaway right now. Without the layaway plan, I wouldn't have been able to purchase any of them because there's usually only a matter of weeks to buy before they're sold out. But this way, it gives me time to save up enough each month to pay it off in installments.

Granted, I recommend layaway ONLY if you have steady income and you know you'll actually HAVE the next payment when you need it. I put a little aside from each paycheck, after paying whatever bills are due, specifically for this purpose. And I make every attempt to pay it off early, if I can (mostly so I'll get the doll that much faster).

    6. I love the option of layaway, but for me, it feels like it'd be a bit of a spiral into insanity.
First I'll have one doll on layaway, and then feel so great about how it feels like it costs less, the higher the prices and the quantity of the layaway dolls will get.

Also, I consider my income pretty steady, but if something happened, I'd be devastated and unable to finish the payments and get the doll I was so excited for. So I stick with saving and buying straight-up when I have the money.

    7. Yeah- Layaway can be dangerous. Make sure you have the downpayment immediately. Or else it will just exist as a maybe possibly that you might have ordered.

    8. I bought my doll on layaway from DDE and plan on doing it again this tax return season (the same way I got her, I'll get her brother!). So long as you go with a reputable dealer, and use PayPal, you'll not only be fine, but you'll be glad you did it. You never know when unexpected bills (ehem CAR thanks for breaking down...again...) come up and need that doll money more than your doll. This was my experience, though, so maybe it's just a dealer issue?

    9. I have never used layaways on official sites, so I can't say much about that.

But I have bought all my 2nd hand dolls so far on layaway, and I'm really happy for it, because otherwise I would never had been able to buy them. And those I've bought from were totally okay with it, some of them even started saying that I could get it on layaway if I wanted. :3

    10. I plan on using layaway to get my first doll<3

    11. I love layaway~ I currently have a second hand doll on layaway that I wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise. I also plan on putting two new dolls on layaway next month. I should be able to make almost enough money to pay them off but it won't quite be enough so layaway will save me there.

Also like I tell my parents, it;s good practice for when I'm out on my own and actually have to pay monthly bills. The only difference is I'm actually getting something I like out of it!

    12. I use layaway for many of my dolls and more expensive outfits too. I also have allowed other to buy from me using layaway. I think it's a great way to purchase items. I have some really wonderful dolls and outfits due to layaway that I would not have if I had to pay the full amount all at once.

I want to add that I have always paid off every layaway I have had and have always gotten great buyers who have done the same for me.

    13. layaway's as well as other options for paying are a good thing at least to me. I just like layaway I am going to do it because it makes it easier to get dolls and things. Instead of waiting and waiting. In away you already got the item on hold and all you have to do is finish paying it off. With saving you have to wait until you have the money then pay then wait for the doll to be made and shipped.

So for me layaway feels like I already have my doll just got to finish paying and they get to come home. I know I am weird.

    14. I've put a doll head on layaway and I think it's really useful! It means that I don't have to wait and wait for the doll even though I've paid it off in full--a six-month layaway means the head should be ready to ship as soon as I pay it off. It's also good for my impatience: if I'm saving up for a doll, it feels less tangible and I'm more likely to spend the money I've saved. However, with a layaway, I have to pay a certain amount every month. It makes it easier for me to budget.

    15. I prefer saving up & paying for a doll, but if it was a doll that I just had to have.. I would use the layaway option that is offered by some BJD companies. I would make sure to have enough for a good down payment, so I would not run the risk of not being able to pay off the doll.

I think I would feel too ashamed if I put one on layaway & it turned out I was unable to pay them.. not to mention that there might be someone else out there that could afford the doll straight away.. yet they might have bought another doll, bc I held a doll that they wanted.

I find it strange that some BJD companies will only offer layaway on LE dolls, yet not the custom choice dolls.

    16. Layaway is nice, I'm doing one right now. I have enough money to easily pay for the whole thing now, but it's more of a just-in-case scenario. What if my laptop dies? What if the car dies? This way my bank account is still plenty full!

    17. I can't see much good in layaway. How should I say this, hmm. Wouldn't it be the same just save for the doll and pay after you can afford it for sure, since you can obviously calculate the amount you need to budget for the layaway for each month. It is the same amount of money and time anyways. I see it's very easy to over extend accidentally and get some nasty surprises later.
Actually it annoys me a bit that layaway is advertised as a good option for example in electronics shops. Lot of cases where especially young people who want keep their standards of living after moving out end up with financial problems. (This, of course, isn't only because of layaway.)

    18. I like the idea of it, but alot of ideas sound good on paper. I personally wouldn't use layaway unless the doll was limited, just because, I don't have a constant income, and I don't like leaning on my parents to buy me a doll. Plus, I'd probably be one of those people to put like 20 things on layaway and then realize that I didn't have the money I needed for it later.

    19. I've never used layaway for a doll. What if something should happen and I couldn't keep up the payments?

    20. I love, love, LOVE layaway, and if it were up to me all BJD companies would offer it. I'm not good at sitting on large amounts of money without spending it, so making many small payments instead of trying to get up 500 dollars all at once works brilliantly. If a company doesn't offer layaway, I'll usually go to a place like Mint on Card or Denverdoll that does. Yes, it takes longer to get the doll, but if you know you can make the payments, it's the best, easiest and most affordable way to go about it.
