What are your personal favourite BJD bodies?

Nov 3, 2023

    1. I've been researching bodies lately and was curious to know the opinions of others with more experience in the hobby! What doll bodies are your favourite for posing, aesthetics, and/or value? Any size is fine, I'd love to hear it all!

    2. It's gotta be Little Monica's bodies. Imo they had the absolute prettiest sculpts. As far as companies in operation, Nakana Workshop. Absolutely gorgeous.

    3. I adore the posing on my Maskcatdoll MSD body for its smooth movement and stability, and I've heard from those with SD bodies that those are also excellent. My favorite I own is my 75cm Dikadoll body - I haven't found a pose I want that he can't do, although I'm admittedly not the most adventurous with posing; his upper torso piece likes to slouch, though. Telesthesia's 75cm body I had has incredibly versatile posing, but it was too heavy for me and squeaked when being posed, so I sold it. Impldoll's Star Muscle girl body doesn't have the most versatile posing, but it holds poses better than just about anything else I've handled when bumped or carried. Loongsoul's Bloom boy body handles like a dream and looks elegant and natural in any pose it takes, and it can do an actually natural-looking crossed arms.

The more I look at that list, the more I think the Dikadoll body is a favorite because of the head attached to it. :whee: Objectively, the Loongsoul is probably the best overall body I've tried. I've never seen a more lifelike poser, even with the limitations of resin and joints. That said, it's more expensive so I'd go with Impldoll or Dikadoll as best for their value, as far as the bodies I've handled go.

    4. I don't own a lot yet, but the two I am loving are the 80 cm 2d doll. He is heavy so I don't like leaving him standing on his own because he is SO TOP HEAVY.

I have a dollzone taru on a B45. Poses smoothly, like a dream, has little rubber bits in the joints so I don't need to suede, quickest to get to a standing position. Even with the extra weight of the ears (anthro rabbit) still holds the pose. I ordered a 68 body from them and I am genuinely excited to get it to see how an SD poses with these little additions.

    5. For value, I love my very old Dollzone single jointed body because I paid so little for it and I'm constantly impressed by what it can do. It doesn't have a ton of joints but they are engineered well and put into the right places, making it easy and pleasant to handle the doll. I haven't handled any new DZ bodies but I hear they're also good posers, I'd be really curious to compare them.

I also like the newest Souldoll Soulkid body because it's easy to operate inside clothes and the posing looks good no matter what you do. It feels nice and sturdy and the limbs don't rotate around in the wrong place at the wrong time. I like how it doesn't look stiff even when it's unposed. I guess value-wise they cost pretty much the same as most similar 1/4 bodies but I did get it for a great deal second hand and consider it one of my best bjd buys.

    6. So my dolls by now are mostly very old, and I didn't mind single joints and old engineering so there is plenty of that. I think in my collection, my favorite that is still available (?) At a good intersection of aesthetic and function is the Popodoll V1 male body. I would buy another. I really think it moves and poses enjoyably and it's worked for many different heads for me. It's very nice in the collection of older dolls.

    7. I still have a real soft spot for the old, Type1 CP/Delf bodies. They're simple single-jointed bods, so in no way acrobatic posers, but the sculpting is nice and they're very solid in the poses they can do.

For the most naturalistic posing in my crew, I'd have to go with my Doll Chataeu guys, who are on the A-03 and A-04 bodies, with the extra wrist and ankle pieces. There's a definite learning curve with those bods, and you have to watch their elastic tension like a hawk, but once you get a good feel for how they move and balance they're capable of some remarkably graceful things.

    8. My favourite body for poseability is twigling’s body—it has shoulder joints that you can roll forward and back to slouch or stand up straight, knees that are pretty good at locking in different positions and feet that have a joint to go from flat to heel feet. It poses very naturally, even when loosely strung, and it actually comes in 4 different heights, based on leg and torso options, so it can be anywhere between 68 cm and 60 cm.

    9. Luts used to be my favorite for bodies in general, but I'm not fond of their recent style change of the newer releases. Dream Valley is my favorite for functional fantasy sculpts. They can actually pose! But overall the best bodies I have ever owned were from Dollzone. Beautiful sculpting and possibility! And I don't even own a Dollzone body at the moment.

    10. Iplehouse bodies are my favorite. All of their mature SD female bodies are unique, and they're all amazingly sculpted. nYID has a beautiful hourglass figure, SID (mine is from 2014) has a plainer but still pleasant figure, and EID looks like a full-bodied classical nude statue. I don't have an HID, but they do some amazing things with that sculpt, too.

    11. I own a lot of dolls from different companies. I would say for me: Withdoll, Luts are great posers and standers while also having nice sculpts.

Not so great: Soom. They look pretty but the knees love to give. I really should wire them.

    12. I adore the Dollzone bodies. I only have the 1/6 male body but there’s so many of them I definitely want.

    13. There's an older thread, with a lot of replies already, right here. You might enjoy reading through those, despite some bodies discussed there probably not being produced anymore (although it's not that old of a thread).

This thread might get merged with that one anyway, I did comment on there that my favorite body is the long-discontinued Fairyland Chicline male (both of the available options at that time), and the females' bodies as well. They were way ahead of their times, but not what their target demographic liked/s, so they didn't make them for too long. However, I do own one of the male bodies, and is by far my favorite doll body of all time, even OT doll's bodies (not including action figures, because those are another type of aesthetic all together, but if the Chicline male was more idealized in proportions, and less "stylized" in many ways, it would be my top favorite body of any genre!). (:

    14. My favourite is Supiadoll 60cm double joint body. For boys, Loong soul 73cm (I have the 68cm on order, so hopefully thats as good too). I've heard from my friend that Charmdoll 70cm is very good for posing too.

    15. For me personally it has to be DikaDoll and Doll Family H. I have dolls on Doll Family H bodies in the 60-75cm range and I love their sculpting and poseability <3

    16. I love the new Souldoll Soulkid girl body. The arms don't always hold a ton of in-between poses (especially if they're loosely strung), but it slouches well and has a good mobility joint. My other favorite body right now is my Loongsoul 68cm old boy body, it has so many solid posing options.

    17. I agree with this…you just can’t beat those elongated Doll Chateau limbs for a fantasy-like grace that is so beautiful, it’s almost otherworldly. I have them in both MSD and SD size and they’re so much fun to pose. They can’t stand without aid of course (I prop mine against a backdrop whenever necessary) but man, are they ever great natural slouchers! I have one of those bodies on my deceased fairy character, and I swear she can be elegantly posed draped across a fainting couch to look positively dead.;) The litheness of those bodies in seated positions is epic!

    18. I've had pretty good luck getting my guys to stand on their own... But then, I cheat a little. I plivered their hip, knee and both ankle joints for some extra stability.

I think the real trick to it, though, is the elastic tension. It absolutely has to be at that very-tight-but-not-TOO-tight point to pull it off, and that's not an easy thing to get exactly right. A little too tight and they curl up into a leggy ball if you look at them sideways. A little too loose and they'll flop over in a fit of dramatic melancholy. (We're not going to talk about how many times the Scribe of Sorrows has done that. <_< ) I haven't tinkered with DC's smaller bodies, but I suspect they'd be similarly picky about it in spite of having to support less mass.

    19. Of the dolls I have my 62cm Loongsoul boy is the best poser, and I was surprised when i got him at how much I actually like his body. I don't think their photos do it much justice. My other Loongsoul boy, the 73-03 body is also a really nice poser.

    20. I have a number of discontinued bodies and can be hard to pick up secondhand. All of these are 58+ cm tall. My best standing posers are my Glorydoll female, Volks Oldskin solid torso and Iplehouse EID Model body. These 3 can stand unaided for days. The body I think most beautiful is my Dollshe Pure Body - I think it’s a work of art and the toes are adorable, but well, the company is problematic. A close second is my Iplehouse EID Rex. Most natural poser is the doll of my Avatar, Volks SD 13 Rinon. My favorite sitting doll is my Dollshe re-released Hound body, who has a great slouch.
