What are your personal favourite BJD bodies?

Nov 3, 2023

    1. I only collect SD, so all of these bodies are 54cm-65cm. For boys, I think Luts Senior Delf, Supia 65cm, Doll Chateau Youth (the first one) and BlueBlood Doll are some of the prettiest, and they pose pretty well, too. I love the look of Dollmore Adam, but it can be a bit kicky and floppy. Luts Muse is my favorite gender neutral body. For girls, Dollmore Zaoll, ResinSoul Mi, Iplehouse, and Fairyland Feeple60 Moe are some of the prettiest.

    2. Loongsoul, hands down. i have the 68cm body and it is such a dream to pose. It's got a lovely weight to it as well, and just looks lovely. I'd kill for them to make a less-muscled boy body in the 68~72cm range. They're out of business, but the 60cm Magical Angel girl body is almost as nice. And, admittedly, I thought Volks was mostly hype, but after getting my hands on an SD body, it's proven to be pretty lovely.

    3. Out of my tinies the Saintbloom body I have my Soom Cheshire Jr. on is so adorable and dainty. I adore her silhouette and hands so much.
Out of my MSDs my Unoa boys and my Dollits SooHee have my favorite bodies. They're both sculpted so well. And the Dollits poses like a dream with minimal effort.
Out of my SDs, my Dollzone Byron has the nicest body IMO. He's on the 62cm B60-005 and it is very proportionate and is overall aesthetically pleasing to me.
Honorable mention is my Soom Shale Death Knight specifically his centaur body. I think Soom did a wonderful job with sculpting the MSD centaurs and hoofed legs in general, however the posing for the centaur is extremely limited IMO.

    4. sadly my top favorites are uh. no longer available except for second hand - the Luts Junior Delf body and the old-school Delf bodies. I'm really fond of the summerbird bodies as well but idk if the artist will ever do another run.

Out of the ones I have that're still available, I'm quite fond of the Withdoll 60cm. It's got a nice heft to it without being unwieldy, and holds a pose pretty solidly.

    5. Soom's Rosette body. I don't understand why they weren't more popular, because to me the poseability is everything I have ever wanted in a doll.

keywords: no to belly joint, long legs, large feet; yes to big breast.

    7. This is going to be the least helpful answer...but, the 5th Motif body is just :chocoheart

    8. I'm going to just discuss my bigger dolls here.

Aesthetically, I like the ones with the joints just under the chest and no lower joints. They just look more pleasing to me because the joints are hidden in a natural bend of the body. But for me the three segmented bodies have better mobility, and they seem to hold their poses better. I am always torn between the appearance and the better posing.

My favourites for both though are Luts Senior Delf, Ringdoll, Doll Family A & H, Loongsoul, and Mystic Kids.

The Doll Leaves 70 cm body is solid and a great poser, but the 63.5 cm one can't pose worth a crap. My Resinsoul and Bobobie dolls don't pose that well. I like the way the Dollzone 62 cm looks, but not a fan of the mobility.

    9. Hmmm, of the ones I've got? I've definitely got a few I like handling more than the others! I think they're all nice in their own ways, but yeah. There's some favorites.

Disclaimer: I don't mess with the stringing on my dolls all that much, and only one of my dolls has any kind of effective kips/sueding. I'm looking at these guys very out-of-the-box.

Goblin Tales BJD Cassie: Immediately impressed me with posing right out of the box. She holds a pose well, and has a good range of motion. Granted, sometimes she's a little stubborn, but I'm not often frustrating myself the way I do with some of my other dolls. Also, lovely sculpting and I like how her joints are part of the sculpting rather than the whole like, separate elbow or knee beans deal.

Volks DearSD: My one doll with functioning kips! Also good at holding a pose, my one annoyance is that the legs on this body are single-jointed for reasons unclear to me. The arms are double-jointed! Why not the legs, Volks? But still, very cute and cuddly. Definitely a doll I bust out just to hold. I understand why folks love these little guys so much and if I wasn't limiting myself for budget and space... yeah I'd probably end up with a DearSD army, too :XD:

Huajing Doll 45cm Girl Body: I think mine is version 2, and they're up to like, 4 or something? It's a very basic slim MSD body. No standout sculpted features, nothing major for the aesthetic standpoint, but she's the first doll I got where I was like wow, I can pose her however, and she stayed the queen of the posing roost until I got the DearSD. Very rarely does my girl misbehave when I'm trying to pose her; most of the time if there's an issue, it's because of the clothes I put her in being too tight or too thick for her to bend the way I'm trying to get her to. Huajing Doll is just starting to expand their color range; if you have a floating MSD head that's in the paler resin shade range, I definitely recommend checking out their 45cm bodies for good posing at a great price.

    10. I haven't owned a lot of dolls, but in my experience... Dollstown's 15yr girl (discontinued) and 15yr boy (the discontinued pre-2013 version) remain my gold standard. The sculpting is intricate, the body lines are beautiful. They are both old dolls and single-jointed, so they need to be wired and sueded to increase range of movement, although of course there are some poses they struggle with or just can't do. But after I increased their range of movement, they've become quite versatile, and they look effortlessly natural and organic in whatever pose I do. They are also fabulous at standing unaided - I don't use doll stands, and none of my other dolls can hold such diverse standing poses as these two DT bodies. I think I've figured out the engineering/sculpting that enables them to hold standing poses so sturdily and reliably, and that just gives me more respect for their sculptor (An Jonghak of Dollstown).

If I get a chance to buy Dollstown's more recent bodies that are double-jointed, I would!

    11. @aihre I am so impressed with how natural DT's bodies look in any pose. I don't think I've seen any other doll that looks so natural. Have you found something on that kind of standard eventually? So far I'm getting a Maskcat, and my second doll will be a Maskcat as well, but I definitely want a different body (more mature, different shape) for the third doll and DT's 17-18 bodies are amazing. The only other body that I'm considering is Dream Valley's 60cm girl body which seems to pose great and scratches my Doll Chateau itch for a spindly body while retaining human proportions. Although DT's sculpting is just something else.
Can anyone compare Dollstown to Dream Valley's 60cm girl bodies in terms of posing?

    12. @lutke I haven't owned many doll bodies so my hands-on experience is limited. Hopefully others can weigh in with their thoughts too.

Personally, I try to look at lots of promo pics and discern whether the doll has a natural "vibe" to it. And where possible, I look for owner pics and reviews. It's not always easy to discern quality of sculpting and posing from pics, but if you look at enough of them you'll start to recognize what looks good to your eyes, the qualities you're attracted to. At least that's what happened for me.

I have a Dream Valley mini (B4-04 male body, 51cm tall). The aesthetic sensibility is quite different from DT, but I think the body sculpting is of similar calibre -- subtle and intricate. I'm constantly impressed by how well my twiggy mini is able to pose and stand, and it always falls into natural poses. And the joint engineering is outstanding, probably the best I've encountered so far (but again my experience is limited). I don't know anything about DV's 60cm girl, but I'm sure it's just as good.

I own 2DDoll's 68cm girl and a Bardo Research tiny (18cm), and I think they also have great sculpting and posing for their level of stylization. But at the end of the day, Dollstown remains my gold standard for sculpting, everything I see (male and female) gets compared to my DT dolls. I keep a body shortlist for hybriding - for 57-60cm girls specifically I have Fan Studio/fanf_11, ANotherSecret, Supiadoll, and Maskcat. Maybe I'll have a chance to try those bodies someday.

    13. @aihre Mine's not here yet, but I have done a lot of research about the posing on Maskcat and the 57cm body is really impressive and it always looks graceful. All it lacks is a 3-part torso, but the one chest joint has good range.
I really wish the Dollstown bodies had mobility thighs, but they look so effortlessly natural in a way that I haven't seen in any other doll. There's something special about the sculpts, it's not just detail.
