1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What attracts you to comment on picture posts?

Jan 10, 2010

    1. Just because something is popular doesn't make it more or less worthy to be viewed.

    2. I'm addicted to box openings so I will generally comment on anything in that sub forum. But as far as galleries and photostories go I check out the title and the dolls involved. If it sounds interesting I check it out and if there is a specific moment that stands out to me like something really funny or something really cute I type up a comment to show my appretiation.

I also agree that if I recognize someone's username I'm more likely to comment.

    3. This is actually quite interesting to think about- I base my commenting on the following:

-the number of other comments: same as you, I like to give people who haven't got any some encouragement- however, I absolutely have to like your photos- I don't comment if I don't feel particularly moved by something- even if there are no other comments

-the subject matter: unusual or more creative angles always pique my interest, as you see a lot of the angel/demon/boyXboy etc. type postings around here. If you come up with something clever or sweet, then I'll probably have a look.

-Interesting titles: in the gallery it's especially important for me, if your post has a really clever or interesting title, I'm about 10 times more likely to wanna be there, if only to see what it's about.

-Deep/meaningful images: I love things that are emotionally provoking- be they racy/scary/magical/or sensitive- I like gallery posts that make me go "eh???? Wow!!!"

-A doll I like: basic. Obviously, I'm more interested in seeing molds that I'd like to own, or even just ones that I admire.

    4. may be if the 'character' of the doll is strong, well-done face-up, well-made outfit (doesn't have to be fantasy...just neat and well made...), i'd love to comment...ask sometimes...I comment about a wig once...
photography is considered by nature...i mean, when i see the pics turn up side down but not in an enjoyable pose or blur...(@.@)...i guess, it's just by nature if i pass the gallery so quickly...haha...

there's also sometimes a pretty doll but i don't know...her prettiness was kind of boring...pretty, well dressed-up...face-up is ok...but the whole look is just...i feel i'm bored too fast when seeing this kind of prettiness...I then don't feel to comment on the pics...

i'd rather see BJD database than gallery itself, though...i went to one database recently and the pics there...wow, i could feel the 'fun competition' there...and they can present their doll very nicely in 1 pic (i can feel the character and enjoy it)...

I'm not a good photographer myself and still 'learning' in bjd world (making doll's character, style, etc, etc, etc)...so seeing great pics can be inspiring in terms of taking pics, making style, face up, etc, etc...but when the gallery isn't so great, so (>.>)...i won't be inspired...

i was get into bjd was because of i saw a 'gallery' in flickr...what a great shot!...the girls are cool, the style is simple but very cool...the characters appeared. photography is great...everything is cool!...the owner seemed didn't try too much to 'make' her dolls look like that...but her dolls are awesome in everything...she really made them look awesome!
sometimes, there are too many awesome-ness so, i can't give any comment anymore...speechless at most time...hahahahaha...

may be rather than in gallery here, why not also try other 'public' gallery, like flickr, or photobucket? I mean, sometimes, i feel that people are more generous to give a comment there (if comment that important)...i also subscribe my most inspiring flickr albums in my yahoo feed . I'd love to see their new doll, their new outfit made for their girls/boys...call me freak, but i enjoy their dolls...and of course, the photography...(^.<)

    5. Creatively, I have a very large and diverse range of interests...so I am always looking through the gallery and box opening threads for anything I think might strike my fancy. If something touches me either emotionally or creatively in the heart, then I will always comment on it...be it beautiful perfection or a unique and quirky take. And occasionally there are photos that actually seem to show the emotional nature of the doll...those postings are sheer magic and I will always comment on them.:)

    6. Generally I just comment on pictures that really impress me, be it the photography itself or the doll or outfit or setting. Or if someone is new or the post doesn't have any replies yet. Sometimes if there are all ready a bunch of replies, I don't bother. So far I've pretty much ignored the photo galleries here as I know I'd get lost for hours but on several other groups & boards I post regularly on photos though sometimes I'm a bit to busy & then just lurk.

    7. A great range of things I suppose. If I like the doll, if I like what was done to the doll, if I like the photography, the composition, the idea, the colors and the effort. :]

    8. First, there are certain molds I can't go by. I always comment on pictures of Unoas, and DZ, and Volks. Besides, there are photosession of dolls with make up of my favorite artists, Cheryl, or Ladious, or Rabiruna, or Poppy and other, it is always a pleasure to see their creations and of course I put my admiration into words.
But beyond these cases sometimes it happens you just open the thread with a mold you are not interested much, but you see such a fascinating shots there, that you do want to say some words to the owner, to thank him for sharing such a miracle :)

    9. I have a very wide range of interests. It doesn't matter to me the size of the doll, the mold, the company, the resin color (or if it's not resin at all).

There are two things that will affect whether or not I comment:
      1. My mood.
      2. The photos themselves.

If I'm feeling in a lurking mood, it's a rare amazing photoshoot (or even just one photograph in a shoot) that'll provoke me to comment in spite of myself.

      As for the photos...

A lot of factors determine whether or not I comment. Maybe I feel like not much thought or care was put into the doll. Or not much thought or care was put into the shoot.

I hate looking at perfectly wonderful dolls that are dressed very half-heartedly with their wigs and eyes askew, sitting with their arms sort of hanging a their sides on the edge of a table and doing nothing than staring vacantly off in two directions. This is often accompanied by slightly canted, horribly lit, grainy photo quality and often stray socks the photographer forgot to remove from the photo.

In these photos, the dolls are nothing more than dolls with elaborate backstories (if that). It's Fred, the Magical Half-Angel-Half-Vampire. His sister is a unicorn and his brother is a Ferrari. It could be utterly absurd or it could be awesome. But I'll never know because all I get is random text about a doll who looks like it needs an intervention. The photos make it seem like nothing more than a (cheap-looking to boot) piece of plastic.

I like interesting photo angles, compositions and lighting.
      I like interesting props.
      I like interesting clothes.
      I like interesting backgrounds/sets.
I like dolls posing with life and character.
I like owners with a sense of humor about them.

If a doll owner doesn't have the time or energy or materials to provide the above, I at least like to see a doll from many angles (especially the head straight-on, profile and 3/4ths angle and how the joints bend). If you're going to share the doll but you can't or won't provide art for me to look at - then at least provide informational photos! >:B

I give a pass to doll openings as you're generally very excited and want to play and share immediately. I admit to a stray sock and poor lighting in first doll opening photoshoot. ;) But I'm not really talking about box opening photos here anyway.

I wonder if I might not be one of the more picky people who responded. :p

    10. Being new here, I don't know any usernames that I would follow, so at the moment, I'm more of a random commenter. If I see something I like I'll probably comment hahahaha. I'm trying really hard not to lurk cause I know when I start to, I almost never comment afterwards!

    11. I'm kind of random. I will be the 151st "Wow! Great shots! Beautiful dolls!" poster if the pictures really move me. I tend to comment on box openings that are dolls I either have or would really like to have. Other than that, just pictures that move me for one reason or another, and that can include an obviously loved doll, even if the presentation is less than perfect.

    12. 1. Looks like they put at least a little effort into it. For example, grainy cell pics and crappy backdrop aren't included.

      2. Wigs covering up their faces is very annoying. Brush that hair back. I won't be commenting on wigs even if the outfit is cool.

      3. Not spamming. 10 pictures of the same pose or little variation is spam. I don't feel like scrolling down forever. Lots of pics are fine like in different settings, but just select one or two from each set. EDIT: conversely, a thread with just ONE or two pics total I typically feel is a waste of my time.

    13. @The Duchess:"I hate looking at perfectly wonderful dolls that are dressed very half-heartedly with their wigs and eyes askew,"

Wah! I hate this too!!!!! i saw this quite often you know...i feel like aaaaaaakkkkkhhh!!!!!...although it's their right but pleaaase, lady/mister...your doll is super pretty, why did you treat her like that? (TxT)...i represent the doll to cry...(^o^)'''''

    14. I'd like to note that I'm not a perfectionist. Reading it over later it seems like people might take my post that way.

I have a rather old digital camera and it doesn't always take perfect pictures and it may take me some time to figure out better lighting and posing and such as I'm on my first doll and he still has no head.

I don't necessarily mind half-dressed dolls or scruffy characters or amateur sewing/face-ups/what-have-you. (Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.) There will generally be something out of a photoshoot I like as long as people make some sort of effort into posing, setting; etc.

      But yes... There are some times I feel like the doll is crying out for his owner to pay attention to them properly. ^^;

    15. I'm really shy, I only comment if the doll really appeals to me and if I can think of something to say other than "s/he's adorable!" I really hate being the 764th person commenting too, so if a post have many comments already that express my thoughts I'm less likely to comment.

I also need to work up the guts to actually post my comment and not delete it. I have started writing soo many comments that never got posted.

    16. A lack of comments will often lead me to click on a thread, because I'm typically one of the ones who gets no comments (in some cases, even though there's a fair number of views >_>) and I know how that feels. It doesn't always lead me to comment, but if there's anything I want to compliment I will.

The main thing that leads me to click is the sculpts in the post. If there are a lot of comments already I often won't comment myself, unless it blows me away and I have to squee :sweat.

Personally, they don't have to be really fabulous pictures. As much as I'd love to be able to take the high quality portraits some people can, they don't always communicate anything.

    17. I'm a random poster and I post on picture posts that speak to me in some way. Sometimes, it's a beautiful or clever photograph, sometimes a remarkable doll or costume. I tend to look at dolls I like and dolls that are unfamiliar to me. There are a few really wonderful photographers and customizers in this forum and when I see their posts, I always look. If I can't think of anything positive and honest to say, I don't say anything.

    18. In picture posts I comment when I like the mold and the pictures.. Sometimes someone has done something amazing to a not so great mold, and I'd comment on that because I think those people do wonderful jobs..
and mostly I comment on posts where there's not too many comments.. I'd like the people that I comment on to actually read the comment I posted..

    19. I am most likely to comment on photos with interesting or artistic shots, with unusual angles or interesting use of light and/or space. It's obvious when the photographer has spent time setting up a wonderful shot, and it's equally obvious if they haven't.

I'm unlikely to comment if the photos are several extremely similar shots, if the image is grainy and lighting is poor. Photostories of a pair of talking heads aren't particularly interesting to me; I like to see a photostory told through action and gesture. Otherwise, why not just write prose?

    20. I'm more likely to comment on picture posts of sculpts that I collect or are interested in collecting. I even comment on posts where the poster has taken the time and effort to take good photos of their dolls.
