What do you like about big dolls?

Aug 23, 2020

    1. I like the detail that can come with this size and also the detail that can be done in clothes this size , and if resin was't so heavy and hard to carry around I would like even more dolls like spiritdoll dolce and proud that can wear human clothes but there the weight comes as forbiding. To me basic pros are detail ans cons weight.

    2. I've only ever owned SD and MSD but I've handled very small dolls before, the itty bitty ones feel so delicate I always felt more afraid of dropping and breaking one of them. And overall I prefer the more mature style of sculpts that are more common with bigger dolls!

    3. I generally prefer to stick to SD, MSD, or YOSD sizes because I feel like any smaller is just too much. For me, the appeal of owning bigger dolls is the amount of detail you can put into a doll. I feel like the smaller a doll gets the harder it is to make their clothes, shoes, hair, and face-up detailed and clean.
Part of my reason for owning dolls is the artistic and creative aspect, and I find that to be way easier if you are working with bigger dolls.

    4. I initially started out with no intention of buying dolls larger than MSD. The reason for this is how small I am and I figured a doll almost half my height would be too difficult to manage, pose, and carry. The one large doll I bought before knowing much about bjds was a mistake and I did not like it at all. But I was stubborn about getting this doll to work and ended up buying a Loong Soul body. I found out the head probably wouldn't fit on the body I ordered so I found a new head that I really liked. When I eventually got the body and head I ordered I was really happy with how light and easy to move the LS body was.

Soon enough I had plans to acquire more 68 cm dolls because I wanted more than one so I could do group photos and have the dolls interact with each other. There's a few things I like about my larger dolls; first is that they are a bit more easier to make clothes for. SD+ are big enough to get good details into their clothes without having to look for miniature buttons, snaps, or trims. Second is their wigs come in more styles, I see a lot of wigs I like but they only come in 21cm+ head sizes. Third is their sculpts are very much to my liking. I prefer more mature sculpts, and while I have been able to find some MSD ones, it's difficult (I'll be buying out most of WithDoll's sculpts by the time I finish my MSD set of dolls). I will be limiting myself on how many large dolls I buy and I won't be going larger than 75 cm (because making clothes for too many size groups would be a pain and the size dif will start looking odd), but I do really enjoy my larger boys.

Shoes have been a problem to Angel of Dreams Bo old body 90 cm. But I bought size 20 baby converse, second hand for 10$, and I think they work well.
Hes feet is 11 cm and inside of this is 12 cm.

Btw, hes wig is a half human plastic-wig I cut to half. But Blythe wigs do work.

And what I like about him is, he is soo much diffrent from my smaller dolls. He is spectacular. He is like a small child. Heavy , big. Noone miss him if he is in a room with other dolls. And look at him, he looks back!

    6. Sewing for bigger dolls is a lot more fun for me and sewing was a huge reason I got into the hobby. There is also something really nice about hugging and snuggling a large doll. They make me feel safe.

    7. Personally, I prefer smaller dolls. They're easier to display and pack in a bag when traveling to take pictures. 1/6 scale dolls feel easier for me to handle because of their size.

As for 1/4 scale dolls, I feel like there are more options for clothes ,wigs, and shoes. I've also noticed it's easier to find 1/4 and 1/3 scale eyes than it is for 1/6 scale. Same with eyes. Finding 20-22 mm anime style eyes is easy but finding 12-16 mm anime style eyes is harder. :(

    8. I have mixed feeligs on big dolls. MSD is my preferred size for ease of display and transportation. I don't usually run into those problems with 1/3 vinyl dolls since they're lightweight, but resin is a different story. I have a handful of resin dolls in 1/3 scale and they're just so darn heavy! Taking them out for photos is an ordeal between the size and weight of the doll. I tend to become frustrated getting them to hold poses as well, though that does vary between brands and how the doll is constructed.

In spite of all that, SD is my favorite size to use as my creative outlet. Faceups on 1/3 heads are really fun because I can add in so much detail, and the same can be said for making clothes. Having a larger canvas can sometimes make having a more cumbersome doll body worth it.

    9. I tried to swear off SD dolls. They were the first that I collected before I did a big sell off. They are expensive, take up a lot of display space, they are heavy, their clothes and accessories can be pricy, they can be fussy to get standing, and difficult to restring. :sigh So when I got back into collecting I said, "this time I won't go bigger than 1/4"

But I had to break this rule. They are just too lovable. The hands and feets are so detailed and you don't have to play gently with them. Big beautiful eyes to gaze at :love Larger wigs are such fun to brush and accessorize. And while the weight is no fun to carry around all day at a convention, for short carries around the house their weight makes them quite snuggly  Kind of like carrying a cat around! :kitty1
I think all the fuss is worth it. Most of my dolls are smaller and I adore them, but my doll family does not feel complete without my bigger dolls too.

When it comes to sewing I actually find that my smaller dolls are a bit easier, because I don't use a sewing machine, so sewing for my SDs takes a really long time and looks less polished. But I'm sure it would look more polished with practice cuz I'm still a newbie.
But making accessories for SDs, is really awesome. They are about as easy as human sized ones. No need to seek out super micro findings or use a special crafting method.

    10. Yes, much the sewing for me too is fun and reason..

    11. 60cm and larger are some of my absolute favorite dolls....once upon a time I only collected SD and up, but I got into MSD again with artist dolls and now I have a little bit of everything, lol. Like a lot of people, I just love the SIZE of the big dolls - I have a love/hate relationship with how much space they take up, but it's mostly love so they get to stay. I can cram 12 MSD and smaller dolls on one shelf, but I need 2 shelves for 5 giant boys to stand on, lol. I just love their presence.

    12. I have both a mature tiny/YOSD and an SD doll, and while I do think my mature tiny is very cute, I'm much more drawn to my SD! I'm waiting on a MSD to see how I like 1/4 scale, but I find that SDs have a lot of detail in their sculpting and feel nice to handle. There's something about the weight and how it feels easier to get intricate poses out of them. I also love the kinds of clothes that fit the size! MSD and SD seem to have the largest range of beautiful clothing in a variety of subcultures/styles, but I prefer the more mature aesthetic of SDs overall. The proportions feel more natural, while MSDs generally still have a sort of chibi/bobblehead proportion even when they're more mature looking. As another person said, I enjoy the wider variety of wigs that come with the larger sizes as well!

I think they're also easier to paint, because the heads and bodies are bigger and easier to get clean details and work out of.

    13. After my first big doll I thought that maybe big dolls weren’t for me, but after two MSDs, a YOSD and a mini artist doll I’m back to buying bigger again. I’ve come to find anything smaller than a MSD I don’t play with as much. The face ups are just easier to do and look better for my skill level, clothes are much easier to make, as are wigs. Eyes can show SO much more detail when you make them for bigger dolls, and there’s just something about the weight. I have a feeling I’m going to be stuck on larger dolls for a looooonnnggg while lol.

    14. Something I don't think I added in my last response to this thread that I particularly like about SD and up: space/collection size limitations.

I know some people see that as a drawback. To me, it's a bonus. Smaller dolls can lead to a large (and growing) horde if kept unchecked, whereas the larger ones force me to put emphasis on what I collect, who I collect, and why. Personally, I don't want an endlessly growing collection of bjds. I prefer a more personal selection comprised of my OCs and favorite existing characters, and the SD+ are a perfect way to not only keep me in check with the size of my collection—but also allow me to add more detail and life to the characters I end up shelling.

Smaller ones often feel like glorified action figures to me, so the larger sized ones just feel more right for my character representations. Only real exception to this for me are animal/creature dolls, but that might be more of a keeping things in scale deal over needing SD scale cats :XD::kitty2

    15. This is a seriously good point. I have definitely been more careful about what sds I buy than msds, both because of cost as well as space. What's another little msd I can cram in there on my shelf? But sds certainly require more careful consideration for me.

    16. Something about larger dolls just feels more... special to me. The smaller the scale, the more they feel like Barbie dolls or action figures, and thus they feel more commonplace. They're also generally less detailed and simpler looking and portability is just not worth the sacrifice of detail. I like how substantial and awesome 60cm+ dolls look. Larger dolls also tend to have more mature sculpts. MSD size sculpts trend towards the more childlike, and I generally prefer my dolls to look older. That said, I do have a 40cm doll and I like her quite a bit, but I'm not interested in getting another one that size.

    17. I like the weight – they feel nice to hold, plus the bigger size gives them more of a presence.
They're also easier to sew clothes for. I'm currently sewing a shirt for one of my minis and I have to be careful so the sewing machine doesn't eat my fabric.

    18. When I started in the hobby I only had SD dolls for a while, then I got a yosd size one and I ended up selling all my big dolls, I would just always end up picking the small one for ease of transportation and my big dolls would be forgotten. I spent many years avoiding big dolls until I decided to try again some years ago. I still have a love-hate relationship with the size but I've also seen many positives to them over my smaller dolls in recent years.
Carrying them around is still my biggest problem with them as well as I always find them so much more problematic to freely pose them, but I think that taking photos of them is easier than with smaller dolls (since the scale with real world is not so dramatic and you can make it work better), sewing or making things for them is also easier generally and making smaller details is also easier.
This!! They're so nice to hold, their weight gives me a sense of calmness for some reason and the fact they're big gives them so much more of a presence. It's a feeling my smaller dolls don't give me.

I still like all sizes and I think all of them have their pros and cons. I still favour MSD and smaller when it comes to carrying them around, it's just so much easier especially when I'm taking the photos during a walk.

    19. Personally a fan of the detail in clothing at a larger size as well as the space they take up on my shelf! I'm also not super great at keeping track of smaller items, so I worry that I would lose small accessories if I had smaller dolls :sweat

    20. I like big dolls [and I cannot lie]
I had to make that joke :wiggle

Anyways, I like the bigger dolls because I can sew for them with a 1/4" seam allowance or a bit bigger than that. Then they look cool and you can place a lot more detail in a faceup with the bigger dolls. Also they seem to pose better than a smaller doll. I only collect 1/4 sized bjds on up nowadays.

I use to have YoSD sized bjds but my taste has changed in bjds and I don't have any regrets but giving one of them away to mother dearest whom I went in no contact with. She allows the sun to hit her room which the doll is in plain sight. I have a bust that she borrowed and it's yellowed big time. Idiot. But anyways I can rant on about that one.
