What do you think about Hybrids?

Nov 19, 2008

    1. The Scarlet H shirt is awesome :D

    2. Giggling madly....really?

      What a strange post.

    3. ghilie - Seems as if you soon can start selling H-hoodies here! ^_-

It would be interesting making a poll about wether you like or dislike hybrids as a complement to this discussion thread. Statistics is always interesting I think. :3

    4. I'm sure you're not the only one. But to go wtih something that didn't work for you wouldn't make any logical sense!

That's my whole point in this entirety. WHY do we insist on getting our panties in a twist over cost and aesthetic preferences? Everyone has different synapses to experience the world with, after all.

You were entirely correct in saving up for CP bodies if that was what worked for you. And if your buddies wanted to save a buck by using Bobobie bodies -- and they were pleased with the results -- that was entirely correct for them.

      ...

Personally, moi? I'm more inclined to bargain hunt for older bodies with single joints and thicker resin because I *like* them, and by doing so end up with Frankendollies. And, to regress to my youth (or enjoy my second childhood? who knows) nyah nyah to anyone who finds that objectionable :). My mileage varies (a lot). So will yours. ;)

    5. Seriously!!! Now *I'm* giggling madly!!

(giggling madly = giggling like a crazyperson, for whoever it was that didn't get that earlier... It's really a rather commonly used expression. Really!)

    6. Production plans are underway.

    7. Excellent! Cait definitely needs one--it's so the kind of thing she would wear.

I think giggling madly is a good response, personally. The fact that someone would have ethical issues over making a hybrid is just so very out there, that while on one level I would be offended if someone called my dolls abominations (or something along those lines), on another level it is actually really funny. It's like being in the dolly Twilight Zone.

(just so there's absolutely no confusion--I mean people who have actual ethical issues with hybrids, not people who just personally don't want any)

    8. Wow, that's pretty rude. I thought I was allowed to have my opinion. And my opinion was that I see no way it could be unethical. How is that calling it silly? Just because I disagree that body-part-swapping could be unethical? And I mentioned that if I could find a mature mini body for my Volks MSD head I would use it in a heartbeat, which also brings up a point. I know you made that reply a while ago, but I don't see why you should get to tell me what I should be allowed to post.

    9. I've unfortunately known people to openly say that they thought that so-called 'Frankendollies' were horrible, disgusting and that they wouldn't hang with anyone who thought otherwise.

      I say- bullshizz.

There ARE companies that only offer heads, and I'm totally guilty of thinking of which body to potentially put the Migidoll Ryu on. Or it could be just the 'oh, I like the head, but the company's body is wierd to me' and so forth.

The whole point of BJDs is their customizability.

So what if creating your dream doll involves some cross-company stringing? These dolls are created so that it's entirely POSSIBLE to make a doll that's right for YOU.

I have absolutely no qualms about hybrids.

I dunno. Just my two cents.

    10. Dezarii - Great poll! Thank you so much for sharing! ^o^ <3 <3 <3 Interesting results I must say.

    11. Some of my dolls are hybrids, a few are fullset default (although most are customized to some degree.) I have never chosen to hybridize with cost-saving as the goal -- I do so because some bodies/heads/parts seem to work better for my own dolls than others.

I am very happy with my CP/CustomHouse hybrid doll, Kitsuko, because the shorter stature, small bust, and curvy hips of the CH body suits her character and aesthetic better than the taller, bustier CP Mature body which is the default with a Soony head.

I have a very limited HyperManiac doll who now has DoT hands/wrists, because I thought the wrist balls on his original hands were very clunky and unattractive, even though I love the HyperManiac body sculpt in general. And I'm replacing the hands on my Senior Delf Azure (who has a very sensitive, expressive face), because the big manly default Luts hands don't suit his personality -- I think that the SOOM poseable hands (if they ever arrive, it's been quite a wait!) are going to work much better for him.

These dolls are intended for customization, and hybridization, to me, is part of that -- I don't understand why a company wouldn't mind you dremeling down their headsculpt to create a mod, but would object to you adding parts from other companies to make a completely personalized doll.

(To be fair, in my case, I've usually bought a whole doll and then sold the head or body that I wasn't planning on keeping, so it's not an issue of the companies losing money to competitors -- I do see the issue there.)

I think that sometimes the idea that this started as a hobby involving heavy customization has occasionally been lost . . . if you're only intending to buy default dolls and keep them in pristine condition, it becomes more of a collector hobby (which is fine, don't get me wrong!) rather than one focused on personalizing your own dolls to suit your vision.

      -- A :)

    12. Ashbet - I very much agree with you about most things you say in your post. ^_^ One of the parts of the BJD-hobby that I like the most is different kinds of modding in order to create your own, personal little resin character. Making hybrids if it's necessary is - for me - a part of reaching that goal.

    13. Yay!! *proudly hoists Frankendolly banner*

      -- A :D

    14. I think that's what really gets me--that someone would consider the owner of a hybrid a pariah. What a strange way to choose friends or relate to other hobbyists--when I go to doll meetups there is usually a wide range of dolls, styles and individual interests on display, so I'm not sure why anyone would get in a huff about someone making different doll choices. It's a hobby that's very personal in many ways and a 'my way or the highway' approach just doesn't seem to fit into that very well. I can't imagine expecting my friends to have the same taste in dolls that I do, and this really is a matter of taste, which a few people have clearly lost sight of. There is nothing illegal about mixing or matching, and I have yet to see a truly logical argument about why it's unethical which leaves it all up to individual taste. Even if I don't like a particular doll, it doesn't make me uncomfortable or throw me for such a loop that I can't politely interact with the owner and it boggles my mind that it would actually be an issue. It reminds me of the kind of behavior that one might see at the popular kid table in the middle school lunch room--however, that kind of behavior doesn't fly out in the real world.

    15. I never even considered that a hybrid might be something bad. I got into this hobby because of my best friend, and she has some hybrids, and she never presented it as anything other than "well, this head fit best with this body." For most of the dolls I want, I like the body and head together just fine, but I am considering one head/body combo that crosses company lines, and I think it's silly that someone would actually judge me for that.

    16. Most of my dolls are all Hybrid and I'm really happy with them, I love to see my doll fit my dream character more than keep it default and alway feel dislike some part of its. So I have changed thier body to be the new one that will make them have more good looking.

Sometimes when I have to pay for the doll I must decide my mind, how much I like that doll, I love that in full set, default or just a head...

I think this is quite personal thinking of me, I see many beautiful dolls that are hybrid and I immediately fall in love with that. So most my doll are hybrid and sometime I think they're looking good more than default something like that... sometime haed is really big, sometime the hand is very chidish very small or blah blah...

so this is just my thinking if I make anybody feel bad I have to apologise.

      sorry for my poor ENG.

    17. I don't think that there is anything wrong with hybrids. Like it has been said before, some companies only make heads. You wouldn't want a floating head forever now would you? Sometimes you have to have hybrids.

It's also okay if you just want a hybrid so you make it. I've considered making a hyrbid with my B&G head. I dislike the way she poses. I'd like to put her head on a Luts body. I see nothing wrong with this.

BJDs are meant to be customized.

    18. I'm all for hybriding because I like customization. Also I think that successfully pulling off a hybrid takes a lot of patience, work, and time. Any elitism against hybrids is silly when you consider how much effort hybrid-owners have put into their dolls. Customizing is one of the greatest things you can do with bjds. Anything you want: boom, there ya go.

    19. These dolls are pretty much meant to be customized. It's not like every head has a specially designed, original body or even a specific look. So, I don't really get the "artistic integrity" part. If it looks good (proportion, resin color similarities, the parts fitting together, etc.), does it really matter if the doll is a hybrid?

(This coming from someone who owns no hybrids mostly due to laziness. I want to buy the whole doll all at once with matching resin, and I actually don't want any free gift heads. I would want the doll to be complete and it would be hard for me to get a body because I don't like ordering online.)
