Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. What do you think about Hybrids?

Nov 19, 2008

    1. Haha, I have a "great" friend that truly hates hybrids, finds them uncomfortable, gross, and etc, and every time I hear this can't help but sigh.

Personally for me, I say all dolls have the chance to be beautiful and get as close to perfection as you can get. There are many reason why people hybrid dolls, and I don't see the big issue about it. Some people like to save money, some people want to make the perfect character, and there are companies that don't sale anything but heads, like Migidoll or Elysium. As far as I can tell, they make some of the most beautiful dolls, yet some people bother to look down upon them. In the end, I have to say, what makes this hobby so wonderful is that you can almost customize them in anyway you want, which hybriding (we speak English, so now it is a word) is a part of that. I may not have any hybrids now, but who knows, in the future I may have many.

    2. Elysium is an interesting case here. They did produce a body to go with the heads and it was released with Axel. I owned one for quite a while and I have to say that it was incredibly amateurish and didn't do justice to the Elysium aesthetic at all. I eventually sold it because I was tired of tinkering with it in an attempt to get it to function at all. I think it was entirely sensible for Elysium to let that one go after the lackluster response it received and go back to their strong suit: heads. To say that a sculptor is playing it safe by only sculpting heads does not need to be derogatory. Sometimes it is wise to stick to what you're good at and let someone else with more time or skill or financial resources take care of the other parts. It would be foolish and self-destructive to pretend that other doll makers didn't exist. And I would certainly be saddened to see so much non-biodegradable plastic get wasted on failed experiments.

    3. Actually, the English word already in existence for a long time is "hybridizing", not "hybriding". Although I do admit the language is leaning towards making verbs directly from nouns by sticking "ing" on them.

That aside, I fall on the side that has no problem with hybrids on any level. It's not just bodies and heads that sometimes get mixed and matched to create something unique and/or perceived as superior in the eyes of the owner. Hybridizing can be as simple as replacing one doll's bland or unflattering hands with more graceful hands from another company.

    4. I have no problems at all with hybrids, as long as it looks good. In fact I own one. When I bought my Yeon-Ho Crobidoll didn't make their own bodies yet, and even though now that they do my Yeon-Ho wont be getting one,the body is too ripped for his character. In fact, he's eventually going to be getting a dreaming doll modded girl body.

I see nothing unethical about some artists only making heads and not bodies, especially like others have said since this hobby is meant to be customized. In fact I find it rather silly that some people do. I mean its your choice/opinion to own one or not but to call it unmoral? Nah. Doll owners are not going to dolly hell just because they own hybrids.

    5. You would really be suprised how put off some people can be at the fact of hybrids... In fact... Recently I was contacted VIA MSN by someone (not naming names) just so they could put me down about my hybrids and my "low class" dolls. And I tell ya... It hurt.
I love my hybrids just as much as I love my one company dolls. And no elitist comment or rash outburst will make me think different of them.

    6. Don't want to wade through twelve pages of debate, so sorry if this has already come up, but I have two hybrid dolls. I have a LadySaiyuki Ted head on a Volks SD13 longleg body. Why? Because LS doesn't have an SD body made yet, and I like the body my guy is now on. I also have a Customhouse Little Junior Mars head on a Volks MSD girl body. She'd be a LOT shorter and a child instead of an adult if she'd kept her original body (plus she'd sort of be a guy, I hear...)

Dollmore can honestly suck it up, they make tons of money off those of us who dare to hybridize. To be quite honest, if I found a female body that would make my Rosee Asha as tall as she is now (45cm), but lankier and without the Kid Dollmore knees that I so despise, hell YES I would switch her out. There's nothing wrong with making the doll you want, especially if one company's product has a flaw or issue that you just don't want to deal with.

I fail to understand why these big companies (and Dollmore is most certainly a big company) start getting all weepy and picky about what consumers do with the stuff they pay for. Seriously, the sense of entitlement has GOT to stop. It's cute when family-run Volks does it, but let's be honest, they're the only ones who can get away with it.

    7. OpheliaB: Volks is cute with it till people like me realize that my one girl, who is quite possible the only volks kid i'll ever have (due to style preferences) will never be allowed (or will be shunned greatly if brought) into dolpas or volks events at all unless i just carry her head around without her body. ^^;;

Don't get me wrong. I do somewhat understand where companies are coming from, but we respect them for everything they do, and this is probably going to come out sounding really snarky or something right now, but (the ones who get all uppity about it, specifically) could have some respect for the fact that their loyal customers are still loyal and still love them even if they own dolls, clothes, or whatever from other companies as well, and sometimes they go together so well that rather than have this company's doll wearing another company's clothes, someone might prefer their head on the other company's body, or vice versa.

    8. Yeah, that's all been covered. Repeatedly. ;)

And about the Volks thing, people have said in this thread that the LA store has been understanding about hybrids. They prefer not to have other companies' dolls in their store but it's not like they throw people out. Dolpas are elaborate partys paid for by Volks to promote Volks dolls. They do not want non-Volks dolls inside the event. There is no rule saying you have to walk around inside of their event space with any doll in hand and frankly, they get in the way of proper shopping. It's not like you can try clothing on them while you are at the event. At the LA Dolpa there was an informal BJD gathering in the middle of the hotel lobby on Saturday which was 60% Volks dolls but I recall seeing dolls from Dollshe, Luts, Dollstown, Doll in Mind, Angel Region and Bluefairy. Other dolls can go to the hotel and related informal meets, just not inside Volks paid-for convention area. :)

I brought my Delf/SD13 hybrid and borrowed someone else's head so his body could go to the dolly doctor. It's not a big deal. :gingerbreadman

    9. I don't get why people hurl abuse at people with hybrid dolls when most doll owners have wigs or eyes from other companies anyway! In my opinion there's no difference between the two. You want a particular shape or style of hand? Fine. It'll be difficult to match them up and a bit more expensive, but it's your choice. Nobody should tell you what to do with your property!

    10. My personal feel on it, is that it's a great way to go. I actually liked the fantasy doll boy body better than the luts boy body, longer legs, and a 3 part torso, and it had nothing to do with the lower cost of fantasy doll bodies ^_^ I also love the new head sculpt by obitsu, and as much as I like obitsu bodies, they just aren't as aesthetically pleasing (in my opinion) as the dollfie dream bodies. So I want a dollfie dream body for my obitsu head. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, as long as the proportions are right, and the skin tones near even.
As far as respecting company's wishes about only seeing their own dolls? I understand where they are coming from as a retailer myself. I love pics of my customer's dolls with my wigs, can't get enough of them, and if it's a group photo that has wigs from other manufacturer's in the photo, that's fine! However it would be kind of silly, unless they were showing me what they wanted for a custom wig, to just randomly send me a pic of their doll with another company's wig, don't you think? I agree that other wigs are just as pretty if not more than mine in some cases, but on the other hand I kind of have to be a little bit bias to my own.
I think you can apply the same logic to doll companies. I would think they have to be a little bit bias, and most definitely loyal to their own doll company as apposed to others. I'm sure they appreciate the beauty of other company's dolls, but in the end it's their own doll line they want to be loved by others at the end of the day
      Atleast, that's just my opinion ^_^;

    11. Are you serious? Wow.

There's a highly mature and want-to-know person right there... <--- read with tonnage of sarcasm intended.

I'm REALLY sorry you had to deal with that, Jisatsu.

Sorry, I realize this does absolutely nothing to advance the cause of the debate, but it's appalling to think that any of us should be subjected to such hatemongering. It's like putting someone down for having a particular hue of epidermis. Geez. Not to the same degree of importance, but equally reprehensible behavior. [/rant]

    12. Baakay, you couldn't say it any better then me. ^-^

Hybrids are just fine in my opinnion. Do what y ou want to reach that dollie you want. ^^ People who get uppity about Hybrids should keep it to themselves...its not like we think they are disgusting for choosing a doll that belongs to a certain company. I mean really, sit back and relax..XD

    13. I understand disliking hybrids, everyone has a right to like what they like and dislike what they dislike...but what's with all this 'uncomfortable' nonsense? *mind-boggles* Just come out and say that you dislike hybrids, don't hide behind these emotive words because there is truly nothing emotive about liking or disliking hybrids. You either do or you don't and that preference generally isn't based on an emotion, it's based on aesthetics.

It is not for you to lament "Oh the poor artist's vision...Oh the poor company's profits...Oh this...Oh that..." when that artist/company has been paid very good money by the buyer for that product and once it leaves their factory it is the property of the buyer to do with as they wish.

If the artist had a problem with their vision being 'perverted' they might as well give up making BJDs because these dolls are all about the customisation. No one wants a doll that looks like someone else's and hardly anyone wants to buy a doll with a specific character already built in...otherwise they'd have bought a 2 foot action figure instead. And if they companies object to hybridisation, they should spare a thought for the customers who will only buy a doll for the body and sell the head and vice-versa. Most likely, that is the only sale the company will make from that particular buyer - it's more money than they would have had otherwise!

    14. Haha, it's funny that Dollmore doesn't want their heads hybrided..

I was just looking at a Dollmore head and thinkin "if only the body was more like a soulkid..."

lololol. You can't expect anyone not to want to frankendolly - it's so fun! I mean we use different wigs and eyes all the time to create different personalities... What's wrong with switching genders, body types, or age using a different body?

I think hybriding is what makes BJDs so much fun!! :p

    15. Great point!

There are so many people who pass up on a doll because of its body. A person may love a certain Dollmore head, but hate the body. If given a choice between either the full doll or no doll, a good chunk would probably go with no doll because it's not what they wanted.

    16. I have many hybrid dolls. I feel that they are in no way less than if I had gotten them as a full set or as a matching set from the company I purchased them from. I have no problem with full company dolls or hybrids. What gets me is when people get all huffy and elitist about other peoples dolls. Its their dolls. Don't judge them just because they have a different taste then you. I think that if you don't like hybrids then bypass their stories and such, but don't slander them or talk bad hybrids to the people who own them. The whole point about dolls is that they are so different and fun to play with, whether it be switching bodies, changing faceups etc. People just get way to serious about things and loose sight of the fact that this hobby is supposed to be enjoyable and fun.

    17. I'm actually considering purchasing another company's feet in case the stories I heard about DOC feet being too big to wear most shoes are true. I didn't want to purchase anything from another company for now in case the shipping costs get too much to bear, but it might be better off in the long run. Sometimes these things are unavoidable.

    18. I had something similar happen. I was contacted by AIM from someone I met while getting adjusted to a new forum. She wanted to invite me to join some exclusive club but upon learning I had hybrids she stated I wasn't allowed to mention them within the club. I laughed at the idea that she thought I'd accept such a thing.

My AR Ren head was too big for the AR body he came with. The resin and size of the head matches almost perfectly with that of a Volks body. The Volks body was more expensive so it isn't like all hybrids are made from people not being able to afford a 'better' body.

The heads and bodies for various companies fit the likes and dislikes of the buyer's interests. I'm not going to keep a body I don't like, it's as simple as that. I own the body, the company recieved their money for it so it's in my right to sell it if I please :3

    19. Wow, that is just too lame for words! I can't believe she'd think you would want to be a part of their group badly enough that you'd hide one of your dolls in shame. Also, it's good to know that I was shunned by strangers on the internet within a month of joining the hobby! Go hybrids! :sumomo:

    20. I have 3 hybrids, and one of these days I'm turning my "full" Delf Yder into a hybrid as well because I really don't like his current hands.

TAKE THAT, people-who-hate-hybrids. Take that! Kekeke...:sweat
