What do you think about Hybrids?

Nov 19, 2008

    1. Not necesserily, not if they don't sell heads alone they won't because then the only choice is to do a split and whether people buy and split or keep the whole doll doesn't mean they get any less money, the only way they get less money is if people won't buy from them because thier body sculpt is bad enough that nobody would want to split with them so the person doesn't buy the doll at all.

    2. Um... there's nothing wrong about it, if you see anything wrong with hybrids you're taking this hobby, and yourself, WAY too seriously.

I enjoy the freedom to "mix n match" any head and body that I please. Too bad finding resin match is hard as hell.

It's also not about cutting costs for me, but maybe in the future I will hybrid to cut costs... depends on if I like the sculpt etc.

    3. I'm going to have a hybrid soon, and I am excited. I don't care about these people who think they are awful. They can get over themselves. I better watch my words though on here. So heh. I second Orangey34. Wayyyyy tooo serious. really, I dont see what the big deal is. We're sticking a different head on a different body. Oh wait, I forgot, the world will end if we do it. :)

      /sarcasm.

    4. *Cough* Go Ashael. *Cough*

I'm actually looking into getting my own Hybrid at the moment, and before I found them more appealing then regular dolls. Some of the heads are just much prettier then the full dolls. Also, I don't understand what the big deal is--wouldn't somebody want to replace something if they lost, or broke a part? They should be grateful you can even have replacement parts, and not sneer at them.

I say, power to the Hybrids. xD

    5. Well I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I currently have two hybrids myself because I didn't like the body they came with.

Angelo is a very young looking mold and the new DIM body was much too muscular for my taste. As for my Dollstown Hue, I wanted him to be very tall so I prefered a 70cm body.

    6. To be honest, I plan on hybriding nearly every one of my planned dolls. There's only one that I KNOW I am not going to hybrid. For me it's not a matter of anyone's feelings but my own. All of my characters are TALL, thus I look for a minimum height of 70cm in my dolls, some of the face sculpts that come with 70cm dolls don't suit my tastes, but I believe that some of the sculpts made for smaller dolls (usually the ones with larger heads) would suit the different kinds of bodies that I'm researching.

In the end I'm making the doll I WANT, even if it is more or less expensive.. I really don't care. I know what my characters are like, I know what I'm looking for and for nearly all of them, I have to hybrid. I'm perfectly fine with that, though. I think it makes them more unique.

    7. While I prefer complete dolls to hybrids, it's mainly because I know the resin will match. But I have no objection to hybrids & have a couple myself. On one the resin match is perfect & the other needs a bit of tweaking. Several dolls that I want are made by companies that only make heads so I see more hybids in my future. In cases like that it's inevitable. If someone is only willing to buy complete dolls they're cutting themselves off from some amazing faces.

    8. I think hybrids are really cool as long as all the parts match up in size and the resin isn't too off, there are some really interesting combinations out there. :) It's really cool when people put their own imagination into every part of the doll.

    9. i have several hybrid dolls and they are some of my favorites. it's kind of like a FCS where i can pick the parts i like best and put them together. i don't really care if i have not kept the doll's integrity in tact, it's purely for my own enjoyment. i also have a particular habit of switching genders, male head on female body, female head on male body i think it makes the sculpt more interesting somehow. sometimes the sculpts are just, so expected. anyways, yes, i like to hybrid dolls.

    10. I have every intention of Hybriding to cut costs.

I'm not sure what the exact question is here but I do have a real problem with the costs of these dolls. I have been a doll collector for many years and have always expected that when you pay high prices you get 'the works.' That is not the case with BJDs.
I will admit that a BJD is the highest price I will have ever paid for a doll, so I'm not very contented with the fact that they come naked with not even hair or eyeballs for goodness sake! :?*_*

I feel taken advantage of in the case of BJDs but I still plan on having a little family of them none the less.

To stay on topic, I have every intention of Hybriding where possible. I have no problem with so-called "cheap" dolls. As long as I have a head sculpt I want and a body that matches in resin I will be everlastingly happy. :D
My own happiness matters to me. And if I can save hundreds of dollars on a body then the way I see it, I just got a bunch of eyes and wigs for FREE!
      So nyaah. :potkettle

    11. The question came from someone in another thread being horrified by the thought of hybrid BJDs and refusing to entertain the thought of even being friendly to someone else who had hybrids in their collection. I don't think this is much of a debate any more because we're all just agreeing with one another that hybrids are ok and the people who really do object and might have an interesting reason why are staying away because they might look as shallow as the first person.

Some people even have a problem with in-company hybrids, like putting an SD13 head on an SD16 body, or a retired Soulkid head on a new Soulkid double jointed body!

As an aside, you do get what you pay for with these dolls; a blank doll (or a face-upped doll if you choose that option)! Not even full-set dolls were designed to stay that way; all the companies sell with customisation in mind. BJDs are supposed to be a garage kit/blank canvas for the customer to put together how they wish and paint how they wish. Some companies can charge more based on excellent reputation, good quality sculpting and using a higher grade of resin, some companies have to charge less because they are only just building their reputation...but none of them are selling a doll specifically as a 'finished product'. As far as the company are concerned their part in the customisation process has finished, but the doll is to be completed by the owner.

    12. BJD's are meant to be customized. I don't think it would be weird to have a different body with a different head. A company may have the head mold you want but not the body mold you want. Or maybe one company came out with a really good body that you want. It's all a matter of preference. Again these dolls are made to be customized.

    13. Here's another thought for this debate:

What about companies that specifically tell customers not to hybrid their dolls or make it difficult to do so on purpose? I'm thinking about the new DollShe body, and Mr. Kim's very clear statement that he did not wish his dolls to be hybridized.
How far would you go to hybridize a doll that a company specifically designed not to work with other companies' heads/bodies?

    14. I think hybrids are perfectly fine! Cause like you mentioned, some companies only make and produce heads, and other companies do provide a buy body only option!

Plus it's good if you want to take say a female head and put it on a male body, there should be nothing wrong with that. Also for certain doll models, they come on a specific body that may not be liked for the possible character of the dolls. And also some people prefer the bodies of other dolls because of hands, feet, stomachs, etc.

I think it's fine! It also helps overall to create more unique dolls on the market! If every doll head had the same body... it wouldn't be as interesting

    15. That's an interesting thought. While to a point I can understand a doll maker preferring certain things (like not hybridizing), once the doll is out of your hands you have no say as far as I'm concerned. It's not that I don't respect the companies, however, I have my own ideas for my dolls and things that I want to do. I pay a lot of money for them, and want to be able to see my own visions for them completed even if it's maybe not what the doll company had in mind. Being customizable dolls, the original artist is only part of the equation--it's the owner that finishes things off.

Hypothetically if I needed a body like the Dollshe body, I guess it would depend on how difficult it would be to get it to work with other heads. The company's wishes alone wouldn't stop me on this one, since I don't believe they should get a say once they sell the doll. However, if there are other bodies with a similar enough look that are easier to get and deal with, I might take my money and seek out a different option anyway.

    16. that could always be like buying a certain brand computer, where all the parts are made specifically to go with stuff from that brand, and it voids the warrenty to even touch the insides, but people do it anyway. If theres something that someone wants in that box, they'll do it, even if it means getting a new case and reworking the interier layout of the computer.

Same with the dolls--only here, no warenty involved, and no crazy chips XD I know there are some companies who are uptight (and sometimes justly so) about their dolls NOT being hybridized, but its gonna happen anyway. Some people will be far more inclined to avoid doing so since they wish to respect the wishes of the maker, but others will be far more inclined to do as they wish, especially if they really like a head and really dont like a body, or vice versa.

If someone wants to alter the head so it fits on another body, more power to them. It just shows their resolve to do so if they're willing to undertake some serious modding to do so ^^

    17. Well said, a very good thought indeed! I salute you!

    18. In my opinion the makers can wish what ever they like, but the nitty gritty is that those that make it almost impossible are in for more pain. On the start the fact that a company would be very resistant to allowing their customers to make alterations to a doll they bought, can leave a bad taste in ones mouth. It sure does in mine.

so in a less diplomatic way I suppose would be to say. Its my doll I'll do what I want with it. Thats what it boils down to. One may like, or dislike hybrids on an asthetic base, or may use hybrids as they "up grade" But as they say... different strokes for different folks.

    19. I'm in the same field as those that say, I paid a LOT of money for this doll, therefore it is MINE to do with as I like, excepting illegal activity of course.:) Those who don't want their dolls hybridized need to suck it up or get into a different line of business. And as Sims says, the ones that rail against it leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I'm rather reluctant to give them my money...

    20. I haven't read through every post on here, though a good few, so sorry if I am repeating.
I think something that goes to the base of this is the fact that there are small- usually one person companies that make ONLY heads. In that case you have to hybrid or learn to love only the head. It is hybridizing that makes smaller companies possible and some create very unique or lovely things that I think the doll world would be remiss without. I have two hybrids. One is a k-doll, domuya- which k-doll is a head only company.

I don't think there's anything wrong with liking a body but not the heads or heads not the body. As people have been saying- these dolls are fundamentally about what the owner wants them to be.
