What do you think about Hybrids?

Nov 19, 2008

    1. Well... I have 2 dolls that I love as they are, straight from the company (little fee and a dim happy girl) and two hybrids...

My hybrids are both Unoa faceplates... though I didnt do it to cut costs. I honestly just hate the Unoa body. Ive gotten to play with a few and I really dont like the way they move. So I opted for a latiblue girl body and a dim boy body... and I love them just the way they are!

I dont have any issues with hybriding as long as your happy with the end product.
I dont agree with getting a "cheap doll" just because its cheap. You should def. save for what you really want. Youll be more happy in the end anyways.

    2. Are we talking just resin body and head hybrids here? Or are we talking the Obitsu and volkDD vinyl bodies with resin heads as well? I am having my first doll be a hybrid, though it's not exactly a choice I made as "I want a hybrid!" So much as I just found the perfect Obitsu 60cm body for just over $100 and the bust form I want for it at only $15. I like the body I have found and regardless of anything else I do, the resulting doll is just going to have to be a hybrid since I want a resin head for her...once I find said head that is xD. Am I cutting costs by doing this? Yes, but at the same time it's not JUST because of the cost factor, my doll is literally for modeling a ton of sewing design concepts and I need a very pose-able a doll, hence, Obitsu brand. They also happen to be the only brand I can find that offers a larger than average bust choice...like much LARGER than average. So, it makes total sense for me to do what I plan on doing.

    3. I don't really see how that makes a lot of sense. An Obitsu head would be cheaper, a perfect skintone match and would be guaranteed to fit the scale and small neck size, which is an issue with Obitsu hybrids. The Haruka and Gretel heads are quite versatile and if the main idea is to have a doll to be a model, it seems the head would not be the main focus anyway.

Of course get whatever you like, I really have no problem with Obitsu hybrids and have experimented with them myself, but that justification for getting a hybrid strikes me as odd.

    4. Just adding from Dezarii's point, with modding and shaping you could also transform any resin doll into what you want as your model. Plenty of dolls have been given epoxy "boob jobs", and there are a ton of extremely poseable resin dolls out there too, not all of them eye-wateringly expensive ;)

Since BJDs are all about exploring the limits of creativity, I don't see anything wrong in creating an Obitsu hybrid, but if your doll is just a model for your designs, an Obitsu head would probably work out better and cheaper in the long run!

    5. I don't think it's a big deal whether you have an Obitsu hybrid or not. But if your doll is just a model for clothing designs then you've kind of left the realm of what most people are doing with their BJDs, which is more than just using them to model clothing, so what you're doing is a little different from the actual topic of BJD hybrids.

    6. Well, It's not JUST for clothes modeling xD. I wouldn't bother even being in this forum if it was. I do genuinely LOVE ABJD/BJD/Dollfies :D. But as a poor college student, explaining what they are, and going through "OMG that's expensive!" thing..it's just easier to have a super legit reason for having one, especially as a major in fashion design, makes total sense (easier to explain to the parents as well). Then I get the additional excuse of if she is my "model" then she had better be goddamn gorgeous! Get what I mean? I personally hate the obitsu/pardoux heads and I am in love with resin heads. That's my reasoning for holding off, she is also being based on a personal character, another reason I need the PERFECT head. Even if the colors don't match, that's not an issue for me, because quite frankly, I will MAKE them match ;). I am a good artist and I feel I could easily mod a non color matching head to make it the perfect fit in every way.

    7. I have an Obitsu/Resin hybrid with a Lion head. I love him and it is a perfect match.

    8. I've noticed people suggesting that hybrids are the cheap way out of purchasing a full dolls, but reading through the thread, it seems the majority of people hybrid with really quality parts and they do it out of matching a character, not because they're cheap. It's been really expensive for some people to just find the proper body!

I don't think it's anything at all like purchasing a fake brand-name bag. That would be more like buying a re-cast doll.

    9. Im with the notion of matching characters. At least for the dolls and sculpts i like, I've found hybrids to be MORE expensive than their "naked" set counterparts. I've considered hybrids but its not quite economicly fesable for me at this time, with the shiping from seperate companies and usually body with a head is slightly less than buying pieces from different places.

    10. Wow isn't that the truth! I have a Dim love boy head on a souldoll body. I think i paid as much for his body as I did for the whole doll the first time *laugh!*. I find that Some hybrids are a money thing, but a good share of those that are established, it was finding the right aesthetic. or resin match.

    11. seriously...my hybrid is on a Volks body. that was so NOT cheaper XD
and the one im currently making is also going to be on a body that is more expensive than the actual doll. youre right, its all about character. and my characters are eating my wallet.

personally i think those with these "issues" about hybrids have other problems and are just looking to complain about something. as long as you love your doll, i dont think anything else should matter.

    12. Take into account the exchange rate... My latest hybrid costed me $300 USD... in AUD I ended up $580 on him...

    13. Same here :XD:
I have a Crobidoll Thor on a Volks SD10 oldskin girl body and though it's the cheaper Volks body, she (head, eyes, wig and body) ended up costing $510 dollars with shipping included. That's a lot of money in chilean pesos (was like $345.000 chilean pesos when I got her last month. I could bought a great laptop with that *_*), cause you know, dollars is so high right now :S

I really wanted a Volks body for my girl. The swarrico one was too expensive for me in that moment. Pureskin body was the other alternative, but I wanted something of good quality, not something that poses well, but may broke easily, even if I'm really carefull (SD10 pureskin body knee breakage, you know :S), so I chose the oldskin one and I'm really happy with my decision. It doesn't pose really well, that's truth, but it's sturdy, has a wonderful quality and I love how chubby it is xD

I had another hybrid, Oliver, my Chiwoo elf. He's on a B&G type 1 body. Same here, I had two alternatives: Fdoll and B&G. Fdoll body was really, really cheap, but its arms really bugged me, I can't stand how they pose, so I chose the expensive option and I'm really happy I did it, cause the B&G body is awesome. At the end, I didn't save so much money though, cause I had to pay really high customs fees (hate you customs!!! :x)
At the end, Oliver costed like $570 dollars, with shipping and custom fees included, but without eyes and wig.

So, I'm not going chose a body only cause it's cheap, there's always the quality factor, which is really, really important. It's a mix, value and quality.

So, hybrids are not so cheap all the time, it all depends.
      Oh! and hybrids rock!! :D

    14. Same here too!
My cheapest hybrid cost me about $750 with wig and eyes no cloth and no shoes.

I think this is NOT CHEAP at all. :sweat

Some body may hybrid to cut cost but, for me is not. I do want my doll to suit my dream characters and it make the cost higher than the basic doll.:...(

Ex : I have Leeke Hero's head but I didn't buy the body together.
Leeke head is reall so BIG ( I think everyone know this) and it will look like a bubble head
when take it on leeke body, so that make me feel very dislike the company's body itself.

I want my doll taller and slim not an Adult head on child body. :sweat

So it can't help I have to going to the way of hybrid and I LOVE my hybrids so much too.

Some people may said hybrid doll is "a low class doll" because, the head and body are coming in different way,
different company and different quality... or the head is expensive but body is really cheap becasue
you can't affort the good body for your doll , not like a full set doll blah blah... I'm very DISAGREE with that.

for me... I don't care that my dolls are cheap or expensive, but one important thing is "I LOVE them".

      That's it :)

    15. I feel hybrids are almost needed here.... BJDs are supposed to be fully customizable Dolls and body and head should be in there too :o

And for me it will be way cheaper this way since most of the BJDs I want are pretty expensive....

Approx. my frist Hybrid BJD will cost me 400 :)
While it would have cost me more then 500 to get the same company body :)

      It really helps :D

And I can really chose what I want :D

But that does not stop me for liking complete dolls :D
It is just another thing to customize :3

It would be fun though if everybody could say it when theirs is a hybrid XD

    16. BJD's are to be customized by the owner of that doll. Hybrids are just another form of that. If you're going to spend all this money on a doll, shoudn't you get EXACTLY what you want? Besides, Migidoll and some other companies only produce heads and so a hybrid is really the only way to go.

Is it wrong? Nope, not in my opinion. I guess I'm biased since I'm working on a hybrid. :sweat

    17. I see no problem with it whatsoever.

I love love love the Elf doll Soah head sculpt but dont really like the body style that goes for her. I would like her to be a little more understated and not so 'silicone booby' looking.

So I would look for a body that matches her resin color but also has a little less in the chest department.

While there are other people who totally dig the big booby look and want them even bigger heh its just a matter of personal prefereance and also what sort of look you want on that particular doll...

    18. I see it as another way to customize, what if the face is perfect for a character, but the body is all wrong? then a hybrid would be necessary.

    19. As I stated before, I have no problem with hybrids. I'm pretty surprised that some people are, in a hobby that has so much emphasis on customization. This is increasingly important to me now, because I am going to have a temporary hybrid in the house soon!

I'm upgrading my DZ boy to the new double-jointed body, which will leave me with a floating unused boy body. One of my upcoming boys is a Minifee, and I've seen several Minifee heads on DZ bodies. I can save up a little bit and get his head now and have him here in 2 months or less, or I could wait probably nearly a YEAR and get him on his proper Minifee body while a perfectly good body sits around here headless.

I think it's obvious which way I'm going. He will eventually end up on his Minifee body, but I'd prefer to have him here sooner on the wrong body temporarily than wait forever for him.

    20. Personally, I have absolutely nothing against hybrid dolls. If the owner wishes, he/she may do it! That's what I love about BJDs- the high mod-ability. I think that hybrid dolls are another way an owner can be 100% satisfied with their doll(s). Not in love with the body/part(s)? It is possible to "trade it in" for different pieces. (Jointed hands, for example)

Is it a hybrid doll when there are "extra" parts from a different doll? (Such as putting Sard/Beryl hooves on a different mold) I believe it to be so. I don't see any complication with that whatsoever. (unless there isn't a resin match.... but I think you see my point)
