What do you think about Hybrids?

Nov 19, 2008

    1. I would consider that a hybrid too. The thing about resin match is that to a large extent that is correctable if you're willing to put in the extra work (or money if you're sending the head off to someone else). Thanks to a friend of mine, my Ninodoll head finally got blushed to match his Elf Doll body, and he looks great now (to me, anyway). That's why I worry less about color and take into far more consideration the kind of sculpt I want (tall, short, muscular, 'soft' etc) since sculpt is far harder to make changes to. The beauty of customizable dolls is that depending on what you are willing/feel comfortable doing, it's possible to make a lot of things work--some hybrids just take more effort to put together and finish than others.

    2. I had much the same conversation with a friend last nite. I would like a Ricky head, Helios, but don't really want it on a 70cm body, so we were looking at 63cm bodies from Iplehouse and discussing resin matches and sizes etc...

One would reasonably expect a body to be a tad lighter than a head since the head and face are exposed to the elements more than a body.... unless you live in Rio or the South of France

So I agree, the head color is easier to change than the body shape.

    3. I'm very excited...I'm making a hybrid of my own :D A CP Lishe head on a Volks DDII body. I chose the Dollfie Dream body because a) I've seen other CP heads on the body and it looks proportional and matches well and b) the price was excellent. I'm not very good with floating heads and I much prefer them to be whole dolls instead and saving for my preferred resin body (Souldoll Soul Double girl) was getting very slow because of commitments outside the hobby.

I can't wait to have my girl in one piece and I think the DDII body is every bit as curvy and sexy as the Soul Double body, just what I want for my character :D

    4. I am excited for you too! I do not own any hybrids yet, but I am planning to. Some of them look stunniing. :) ~Gus

    5. I agree. My hybrid, Delf El, has a Souldoll body (with AbioAngel hands, lovely long fingers) and it was actually more expensive than the CP type 1/2/3 body, so I definately didn't try to cut expenses. He's adorable and much more mature looking.

    6. I have an CP El head on a Fantasy Doll body. I'd didn't like the CP body for the character and wanted a torso joint. The Fantasy Doll body was a good match and that it was half the price of a CP body was a nice bonus.

I can understand the negative feeling people have when a head is slapped on a cheap body just for getting a "cheap doll" to be part of the crowd. It doesn't come across as something a person with love for the hobby would do, however there are many reasons why someone would buy a cheaper body to make a hybrid.
The body may just happen to be cheap (what is true with my El/F-doll hybrid). I've also heard about young people whose parents won't allow them to spend $500-600 on a doll so they are forced to seek cheaper alternatives and get the head they want with a cheaper body. Or someone may feel it's just not right to spend so much on a hobby (at that moment) and sees the cheaper bodies as an alternative to still be able to enjoy the hobby. There's still love and care for the hobby in those cases.
I don't think people should look down on cheap hybrids. Just like people shouldn't look down on others who only have tinies. Those are often cheaper than standard SDs too.

I'm glad I could make a cheap hybrid with my El/F-doll, because I just bought a new body for $650 for one of my doll heads, because I didn't like the original body and the original body didn't sell for that much. I've wanted that particular body with that particular head for a while now to make one of my dream dolls and I don't think I should settle for less. Most of my hybrids have cost me more to make than my one-company dolls.

    7. This is a hobby that is all about customization for me. Putting a head on a different body is perfectly acceptable for me. While I may love a head from a certain company I might not like their bodies at all for one of any number of reason from poseability to aesthetics to price.

If someone wants to make a hybrid for the soul purpose of having a cheaper body, I really don't see a problem with that. Saving money on the body leaves funds for clothing, accessories, that one beloved head, and many other things. What's the point in having a gorgeous expensive body if you can't afford to dress it?

    8. I don't see anything wrong with hybrids. I have 2 heads where the artist never made a body for sale. So I really didn't have a choice. They were made for Volks bodies but volks just isn't in my taste. I wanted a more mature body for them. Their faces have a mature look to them so I wanted a body to match it.

But I also have something against having the same body twice. I have 2 cp boys but no two people are really the same body wise so why should my dolls be? For me every character needs his own body type that suits his personality.

I'm having a heck of a time with my nanuri >< He works as a topless bartender (LOL XD) so I want a more muscular upper body, but I want him to have a nice curvy elegant shape to him. Clothing wise he's a 17th century baroque man. He's also very shy. It's hard to find a body to suit ):

    9. Not to mention that some companies have unreliable resin colouring, such that you can buy a body or parts from the same company later and have them match worse than resin from a completely different company! I know someone who had that happen when she replaced her MNF Shiwoo's heart hands...it's not too bad because he mostly wears long sleeves, but they are quite a different colour from the rest of him!

    10. I think hybrids are fine, as long as you don't do something like buy a 500 dollar head and put it on a Bobobie body (not as if there's anything wrong with those, they're just cheaper), and claim it to be the 500 dollar head's doll (in it's entirety, like the body and head together). Because that wouldn't be right and would be like pretending your doll was something it wasn't.
Sometimes hybrids are just cool though, because you can combine your favorite head with a more flexible body

    11. Thank you :D:D I'm so excited! Now to find tutorials to actually fix my Lishe head to the DDII body...!

I get what you mean, but most people with hybrids are happy to admit they have made a hybrid and why. Also, if you're buying a doll on the Marketplace and they claim that the doll is 100% original and you're not convinced, have them take lots of pictures of the body and show them to other BJD people. Get a consensus...you could always be mistaken and two heads are better than one at seeing the differences and similarities in something.

    12. Hybrids?.......My thoughts.......Well, I can't see anything wrong with hybrids at all...in fact, I'm all for it, 100%.........

I own some heads from Artists/Sculptors that don't produce bodies, so I seek out the best body I can find to match the head, looking for color/size that is the closest. I also will change their hands too! I like expressive hands on dolls.......

I own some heads that I really don't care for the body that is sold with it! so I will only purchase the head and put it on a body of my choice..........Ahhhhh, that's the thing, it's my choice! I choose what head is going to live on what body!.......I LOVE custom-made, just for me!......:)

Sometimes I see a head I really do want but the Company/Artist will not sell the head alone!......that's their choice, you have to purchase the body too! I usually don't bother and just move on, hoping to find "that" head later on, and if I do then I'll put it on the body I want!......;) "My choice".....;)

As long as I'm happy.......I love my Hybrids as much as my non-hybrid dolls!

      All the best,

      xen :)

(I love my Hybrid Tea Rose "Peace")......

    13. I used to chat with someone I met on here on msn and one day we ended up having a 3 way convo with a friend of mine, now this person only owned Volks dolls, I don't have any hybrids but don't have a problem with them but my friend dose have one. Anyway she was some what being off and just left, I messaged her and asked why and she said it was beacuse of the hybrid dolls I said "but I don't own any" and she answered "but your friend dose they are MONSTERS". She just kept calling my friends doll a monster so I ended up telling her how rude she was and have never spoke to her again.

    14. That's just awful. And not to mention stupid. Maybe if we were talking about human/donkey hybrids they'd be monsters, but I'd laugh in someone's face if they told me that my Lishe/DDII hybrid was a monster simply because she's a hybrid of resin/vinyl. In fact, I'd say "Lovelline is a monster, thank you, she's a werewolf. No one else sees that she's a monster, they all say how lovely she is."

    15. Wow... someone who needs a life, apparently. You did well to drop that one...

    16. Oh yes she was such a bjd snob.

    17. If hybrids are monsters my bedroom is an all out horror show! My hybrid list so far is something like:

CP Elf Yder on a DOD DoI body
      Shiwoo OLD Iplehouse Bod
Dollmore Orlando Ray on Soom Gem girl body
Domuya Zen on a Domuya flexi Perenniel (ok yes same company but different size dolls, Zen cannot come with this option)
CP Moon on a Lost Angel Thunder bod (OMG SOOOO BUFF!)
CP LuWen vamp on a Luts Senior Delf body (again same company, but different sculpters and all)
Soom Godo on a B&G type two boy bod
CP Juri 05 will be on a Spiritdoll body
CP LuWen on a Nobility Doll emotion body

I have an obsession with sculpt, the sculpt and doll height has to be right, so i will happily frankendollie my dolls to get them perfect to my taste. I will sacrifice colour match for perfect sculpt.I have in some cases waited years for the right doll to show up, body and head

    18. Hybrids aren't necessarily unethical, however, I do think it's rude to ask a company to sell only the head in most cases.

I am as picky about a dolls body as I am about the face, so it's completely understandable if someone else wants to pick and choose parts. The only thing to keep in mind of course are resin matches which can look awful if they aren't close and of couse, if the pieces fit.

    19. Ok so I didn't read the whole thread, so this may have been mentioned before, but I though half of the appeal of these dolls were how customizable they are..
Doesn't making Hybrids taboo kind of.. limit that? *_*

The idea of "Fully customizable! but only from one company..." makes me go 'wait, what? :?' I say, if you can make the resin match through blushing, and the parts work together smoothly, why not? :3nodding:

*Pets her Ducan with Heliot hands and modded ears as she wanders back off*

    20. There is nothing unethical about hybrids , you didn't steal the parts *_* you bought them (all "you" in general) , if you like the head but not the body you'll go for a hybrid - naturally ...
Hybrids may done for the price or for matching the style you want for your dolls or for any reason (you like a head but want p.e. a shorter body , especially if it's for a character such things matter more ... I don't make characters but If I saw a perfect face p.e. for Hercule Poirot or minimee David Suchet- on a tall body , ehh yes I'd make a hybrid at once) ....
.... for me I don't want to get the same body twice (except my twin Aletheias) , & I want more than one head for a doll's body to change them or for my heads vitrine , I may take a doll & then take more heads of the same company for this doll , this is not exactly hybrid but I think it's a bit in theme... & I can exchange the heads between diff. bodies If I like to - this is hybrid... I don't think it's something bad or a big deal ...
I prefer when a company sells the heads separately , I respect them more If they do , even if I like all of their heads I will not take the same body twice ... a head doesn't make me buy a body , I have to like them both & having twice a body is too much (exceptions I may do but it will be because of the body itself not because of the head), not selling separately the heads will not make me buy more bodies , will make me buy less heads of the certain company or maybe nothing depends of the body ... as a person who has plans for a heads vitrine I don't think it's rude to ask them if they will sell a head / heads separately ... I mean in a kind way of course!!!
