1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What do you think about Hybrids?

Nov 19, 2008

    1. I posted this as a thread and I see it has been moved to this existing thread, so sorry if it sounds a little disjointed on the grand scale of things here. :)

I was just wondering what are peoples thoughts on this?

My doll is a hybrid and personally I think it is nice to do this, mainly because it makes him a little different, like my own little frankenstien's monster almost!!

Does everyone out there accept hybrid dolls or would they be seen as not quite perfect in the BJD community?

(If there is already a discussion on this, please direct me). :)

    2. In a perfect world, the company that makes the heads I like would also make the bodies I like. I like high levels of posability (though the new Dollshe bodies make me shudder, so I suppose I should add that posability shouldn't compromise aesthetics), but I also like very, very few head-sculpts, so hybrids would be about the only way to go, fufuf... it's not about having something 'different', or something more or less than 'perfect'. It's just that if I'm going to spend so much on something, I'd rather make it as close to ideal (to me) as possible.

    3. I have several hybrids now, and I love them! Some of them were done for cost reasons, and there's one I do plan to someday eventually "upgrade", but the others will stay as they are. I love the height variation I have because of hybriding - I have a tall MNF Shiwoo hybrid and a short Lati Rucas hybrid!

    4. I have one hybrid right now (Angel of Dream/Soom hybrid) and am wanting to do similar with other dolls. Not to do with costs or anything, but because I might not like the other company heads/bodies. My AoD/Soom hybrid for instance, it might have been cheaper to get that than the whole doll (to make things worse - or better depending on your own ideals - the head was technically 'free' as I got it in a promotional event) but that was not my motivation to do it - my motivation was that I really didn't like the Glati head. Similar with some of my wanted hybrids - I have a Leeke-D head floating around because the head is gorgeous but the single-jointed torso on the D body just makes me cringe, considering the posing troubles I get with my Dollinian tiny due to it.
There is naught wrong with hybrids, and I have yet to hear any adverse reactions from other people either about my AoD WanWan/Soom Glati hybrid (maybe that is because though that his Soom elastics broke and he went to the last meet in bits...)

I'll give an additional note though, to my wanting to hybridise my DIM Achernar. In this case it is not about money (however, I've never spent the amount that DIM charge for a body on a whole doll), dislike of the body, anything like that. It is because the 2009 normal skin for the DIM Love line has changed. My Achernar's head does not match the new resin, even though it is by the same company. Yes, I could get a second hand body, but even then I cannot guarantee a match because I don't know when the other body was made, when the resin colour changed in itself and even when my own doll's head was made (because the head is also second hand). His head does however match one of my other dolls colours, so why not then get that sort of body for him instead? At least I can guarantee a match

    5. I can have friends that have them but I prefer not to talk of them, im not a hybrid liking person and I never have been. I prefer to just get the body with my head when I order unless I buy a special makeupped head and then I will buy a body from the same company when I can ^^

    6. Joolz00......I love hybrid dolls. These BJD's were "born" to customise...and I'm so happy to see so many folks making awesome hybrids.

But with everything you will find that some folk just don't accept/like them....but hey, "each to their own", "horses for courses" and all that! Doesn't bother me at all.....;)

What I am very happy about is that so many more BJD makers/companies are offering heads only for sale....yay....and I can see lots more following.....

Just lately I have purchased three BJD doll heads from companies that were "supposed" to be selling complete dolls only.

All the best and keep on Hybriding.......:D

      xen :)

    7. Sometimes companies just don't produce the perfect body you had in mind for that sculpt, or vice versa. That's why people start hybridizing dolls.
My incoming boy is going to be a hybrid - because clothes that fit Crobi body are just so hard to find!

    8. Cool elitist story, bro. :daisy

    9. Saying hybrids are unethical is silly XD! It's like saying it's an abomination to wear a shirt from target with pants from walmart because they're by different designers and weren't meant to go together -.-!

I have two hybrids right now! The first I got because I needed a body for my MD Miu head XD! The second if a Dollzone and AOD hybrid-because I have three boys on DZ bodies and... I got sick of EVERYONE having the same body XD!

I love both my hybrids a bunch ^.^!

    10. The first BJD I got is a hybrid. I told my friend I wanted to make Naoe Nagi from Weiss Kreuz. She told me to get an AOD boy body and a DZ Shoyo head. The AOD boy heads didn't have the eyes I wanted and a full DZ was a little more expensive than I wanted to go for a first doll, just getting into the hobby. I don't think there is any problem with hybrids if that is the look you are going for. If X company doesn't make it but Y does... then as the doll owner you have the right to put together the doll you want.

    11. I'm starting my very first hybrid.
I ruined my Dollmore LE persian nocturne by sanding her eyes open and now I've found a gorgeous white skin head (Dollzone) here on the market place, which is practically new! *o*
I was comprehending selling my girl's body to make some money for a new doll seeing as Dollmore don't sell white skin bodies or heads seperately, but then I found his head and it's perfect!!! ^^

I think BJDs are all about the customisation, and swapping heads and bodies is no exeption.

    12. I almost ended up with a hybrid. I bought a DIM Happy head of the MP, but when I looked at their website, the only body available was the new body. When I wrote DIM about compatibility, they said the old head would not fit on the new body, though the necks are the same size and they didn't specify what the problem was. It didn't look like their new heads were face-plates or anything, but I took them at their word and looked at some other bodies at a recent meet-up. There was a good match with Dollstown and a decent one with a DOC body. I was contemplating what I wanted to do, when an old DIM body came up on the MP and I got that. But I was leaning heavily towards the DOC body, since it's a good standard size for patterning doll clothes.

Anyway, the point of all this is sometimes you don't have any choice but to hybridize, particularly with older heads, if you want a whole doll. And there are the aesthetic reasons as well. I'm looking to put a Raurencio head on a Unidoll body one day, because I love the head, but Raurencio's legs are weird looking and I know that the resin match is good.

Not to mention the fact that if you like an artist's head, then a hybrid is a necessity.

    13. I have a number of hybrids--hybrids allow me to put together the perfect head/body combination for a character. In real life, people have different body types, so being able to get that same variety with dolls makes them all the more life like. I also have three artist heads that I had to buy different bodies for, because the company only makes heads. Hybridizing is just another way of customizing your doll.

Though some people prefer to buy full dolls from the same company, very very few people actually have a problem with hybrids beyond personal taste, and making hybrids is a very common occurrence in the community.

    14. my first doll was an hybrid
i actually just wanted a practice head but then after i got her she demanded a body XD
her original one (x2) was practically the same as dollzone, i don't really like that female body
so i've asked for compatibility, discovering that most chinese companies use the same resin... when i saw the aod body i knew that was the right one, the price was good too

i'm also planning another hybrid, i want to have a bjd for a singer but i would prefer not to ask for a minimee
he would have a limho mono body and a narae butterfly head, i've seen here that the skintone does match and the plates too

    15. like most people here i don't see what's wrong with having a hybrid doll. i was contemplating a hybrid myself a few weeks ago. i think it's very useful if you just want a certain head/body/etc etc. in the end it goes to completing your doll, so who should care what other people think?

    16. Hybrids as unethical? Woah, that seems a little harsh! Hybridization seems like a normal way to go when you can't achieve the look you want with one company or if you're hoping to provide a variety of looks by changing bodies/heads. Matching skin tones sounds pretty difficult when hybridizing but as long as the owner is happy with the doll in the end then who cares if the parts are from different companies?

    17. I'm eventually rather likely to end up with at least one hybrid purely because I -can't- buy the body from the company that made the head -- they don't sell either separately, period, and the doll came with two heads. Both heads are stunning. Sticking one in a box to languish is not a fate that head deserves.

And what about the companies that only produce heads? What are people supposed to do with those if hybrids are so woefully wrong?

    18. I see not problem in hybrids at all. In fact, my favorite (shhhhh) boy is a Luts/Volks Hybrid. I didn't do it to save money, but at the time I started my layaway for the Volks body, Luts had no plans to release an SSDF body separatly. I saved myself a whole 5USD and shipping, so it was hardly about cost, just what was available.

    19. Hey, was interested to see your 08man combination!:) My hybrid is an 08man on a Model doll body. I was told that it fit well by one of the lovely ladies here and I also wanted a body that I knew I could get a selection of clothes for. What's the fit and colour like with the volks body? :aheartbea

    20. Fit and color with an SD13 body is near perfect! The resin match makes it look like both parts are from the same company. There's a few pics of him over at this link:
