What do you think about Hybrids?

Nov 19, 2008

    1. I don't see any issue with hybrid dolls, aside from the 'technical' problems such as resin match and how well the parts fit together. As long as the body and head fit together and the resin is a good match, I have no complaints. (especially when it's -my- dolls) ;)

Actually... I think some dolls look better as hybrids. I have a hybrid DOC Too, and he looks pretty great on a taller, slimmer body with a long neck. There are a lot of hybrids other people own that are really fantastic and unique! ^-^

IMO, to take issue with someone else's mix-and-match doll is sort of elitist.
These dolls are meant for customization, and companies offer optional parts and choice systems; what's the difference in choosing a different body/head if the style or your available pocket money is a personal issue?

    2. Exactly! Hybrids are a way to get the perfect look you want. Sometimes you get lucky and the price is better because of it, but often, it ends up the same price or close, and yet, you'd still choose to make a hybrid because you love this head or that body for your character, etc.

I know I recently went around looking for a perfect head to resemble a singer I was making a BJD of as a gift for my sister, and after going through hundreds of pictures, the best head mold was actually the ultra cheap Obitsu Haruka which I didn't even think about or remember until I was cleaning out my doll closet and found a Haruka rolling around!!!! I almost fainted at how perfect it was.

So then I bought a resin body that matched in skintone and put them together to make the doll! I didn't care about the pricing and would've paid whatever the head that most looked like him had cost. I just wanted a doll that would MOST resemble the singer---an ideal I was striving for.

That's what hybrids are---ways to perfect your ideal, especially if you're making character dolls or if you have a character in mind.

I agree with the premise that once you purchase something, it's yours to do with as you please and rightly so. ^^

    3. Something I really don't understand is why some persons dare to say it is wrong, it is silly or such things.

It is not a personnal problem, that's not even a society problem lol , then why to care so much about why others do with their dolls, hybrids or no o-O

There is nothing wrong or silly or idiot in the fact to put an expensive head on a inexpensive body, as there is no problem to put an inexpensive head on a expensive body ......

I thought ABJD where a fun hobby for custo. and all of this, then, why it should stop when price and brand are mixed ?! Would you blame someone because wearing a genuine Dior bag with cheap clothes ?! People are free from what I know, then they do what they want and to do a drama because it is wrong or dunno what is silly, this is silly !

If we continue in that path, then only factory make up are worth .... it would be silly to apply a cheap selfmade make up on an expensive head. No ?! *ironic*

That problem is not even a problem, it doesn't exist in real, it does virtually because some persons don't accept stuffs that are not their business ! And those same persons think they can be nasty sometimes ....

I want a Calian head ( raurencio ), and I want another brand body ... honestly I don't give a damn of people thought, I don't care if it is right or wrong what I wish. I want it and I know it is my wish and what I like, nothing more to say.

Something wrong ? To judge those who have or make hybrid dolls.

    4. It's odd but as far as hybrids go, I always thought that was the point of dollfies.
Like the head but hate the body? Change it!
Like parts of the body of one doll but the legs don't work? Change them!
Want every part of a doll to be from a different doll? Then do it!
I seriously think the only problem is finding the pieces. I'm piece mealing a doll and finding the right chest is a PAIN!
But honestly, hybrids aren't bad, it's part of the hobby.

    5. I dont mind Hybirds. But if the doll maker asked me not to have there doll head on anouther body. Then I will change it and take it off.

    6. I think hybrids are ok, if that is what you want. Many companies sell the heads and bodies separately, and encourage you to customize your doll, so I can't see why it would be wrong to do so. I personally feel no need to do that, as I am happy with the bodies my dolls came with. But I can see where sometimes you might not be, and then I think it's great that you are able to change the parts you don't like. That's one of the best things about these dolls, you can make them totally unique, and exactly as you want :)

    7. I think hybrids are cool. I don't currently own one [because I love every bit of my MNFs to pieces], but I've got plans for a few in the future. I like MSDs with more mature bodies, but some head sculpts I like come from companies that only make immature bodies for their MSDs. The logical solution is to create a hybrid to suite my tastes ^_^ I wouldn't pick a cheap body for my expensive head [or the other way around] unless it happened to be the body that I thought would suit the character. This hobby is about customization and bringing your characters or visions of the ideal doll to life.

    8. I'm about to eat my earlier words in a big way!
I've been on the hunt for some older BW Kid Delf hands to switch out my Dollstown girl's hands to!! How blasphemous is that? I don't know if it'll work, but I really don't care for those not-very detailed, claw-like hands the Dollstown 7agers have. ^^; So I'm ready to give hybridization a try.
      >gulp<
After four years in the hobby I think it's okay to change?

    9. Good luck Raven! I bet you will do well as you often do. I put some Soom jointed hands on my Volks sd13 guy. It looks nice. TBH, I am not a fan of hybrids, I think it is interesting when others do it (particularly with the artist's head) but for myself I always find a little something that bothers me.

    10. What about companies who only makes heads. There are companies like AiL who only make heads not bodies. Of course they are made to work with Volks bodies but I imagine there are doll companies who only sell heads as well.

    11. i think it goes with each person. Mine is and i am fine, I got a good deal on it. If you dont have a lot of money they be the way to go....if you have the money then bully for you.

    12. I may sound like a broken record but when it comes to this hobby, and really any hobby in general I always say to each his/ her own. To me it doesn't matter if the collector bought their doll as is and kept everything the same down to the default wig, eyes and faceup or pieces it together from limb to limb. I wouldn't judge a person's doll if it was a hybrid or not. Hobbies are suppose to make you happy and to take you away from everyday troubles, not cause you to be self conscience and sad.

I personally love the hands on aspect of this hobby more then anything. Most of my dolls came to me as whole. I just had to select the wig and eyes to make them who I wanted them to be. But I do have to say my favorite has be my hybrid. I put so much work into this particular doll from eye opening and purchasing various bodies to find the perfect one. I love him to bits because I feel that more of myself was put into him.

    13. I think that hybrids are a really good idea- that each doll collector can have a doll that perfectly fits a character they have in mind, right down to tiny details like hands and feet. But, at the same time, I can understand why a sculptor/company would not want this to happen- their doll is, in their eyes, a work of art.

They sculpted that body to fit with that head, and the hands etc to match- it's their artistic work; therefor, I could see how a hybrid, in their eyes, could be seen as an insult to their talent- you're taking something that they spent ages working upon, and changing it as if how *they* intended it doesn't matter. Especially a company such as Volks, who were the first, and therefore might consider themselves to be 'above' those that came after- the others being pale imitations... You can see where this is going?

I don't personally agree with this, as I think that each doll can evolve, and through seeing hybrids- their doll's head on another body, the sculptor could get new ideas for new dolls and types of bodies etc- for example, if they always sculpted immature mini's and saw one of their heads on a mature body, maybe that would make them think of how a mature mini body crafted to go with their heads could work...

    14. I think once you buy the doll/parts you are free to do what you want. I have one hybrid, but it was an ego-project yeon, there was no body for sale from them so I had to hybrid.

    15. As long as my floating heads get some sort of bodies Im not too fussed xD.

I have a couple of hybrids, and a couple of "skin tone" hybrids (same company but different colour) as it was what I could get at the time (feel sorry for floating heads).

My Dollzone head matches perfectly with a volks body. That amazed me!

    16. Since I've last posted in this thread I've grown to love hybrids more and more since it seems a majority of my big guys will end up being so. Both my Elysium and Napidoll heads come from compaies that don't create bodies so I was forced to hybrid either way. My new MSDoll head will be a hybrid as the MSDoll body is going to my Elysium head and I don't wish for them to have the same body. On the wishlist is also an nDoll Luois and while on nDoll he can be sold with a Little Monica body, as I already have a LM boy this head will also become a hybrid, probably with a Luts or DiM body.

To be honest, as much as I love my fullset guys, there's also something really satisfying about finding *just* the right body that will fit both the head and the character I have in mind, it's just one extra step to be taken in the customization process of creating a totally unique doll.

    17. Some hybrids I've seen are really awesome. I can't imagine why someone would have a problem with them. ABJDs are meant to be customized!

    18. Personally I think hybrids are very awesome :)
I'm kind of hoping to get one of my own... I found out I have a pet peeve when the doll's body doesn't have a chest/waist joint D:
The only thing that really concerns me is the resin match... unless of course I happened to do some huge mixup like put tan arms with a white chest and a normal torso or something, that'd be kind of awesome XD; -insane-

    19. My current doll is a hybrid by default, since Migidoll doesn't sell bodies yet. The Brava Bambi I currently have on layaway comes with two heads, and I'm hoping to make the extra one into a hybrid as well.
So, I don't see any problem.

    20. I don't see a problem with hybrid dolls.
I have one, because the original head's body's breasts are too big and I'm not too good in sanding them down. The body I got has a perfect resin match, poses well and looks just the way I like it to look.
I think it might be hard work sometimes when company's sculpts are made in a way that just their heads can be used on their bodies or when you don't have the opportunity to see the finished hybrid before and don't know about a good resin match.
In my case, DoA helped very much.
You can't put them in DoA databases but there is a hybrid database so you're not cut out just because of that and that's really good. ^^
