It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What do you think about Hybrids?

Nov 19, 2008

    1. I love versatility, and the ability to make hybrids certainly adds to that!

    2. i love a hybrid... Its the best of both worlds.
The head i love on the body i like with the best hands, bust and standing ability.
I have a mega hybrid Mecha female and many others.

    3. I don't think I want to create hybrids because I know that it would make me crazy - I would notice that they're from different companies, so that would bug me, even if the head resin matched the body resin. I'd see two styles trying to be one style. Some companies are very distinctive indeed, and a lot of the time i like very distinctive things.
Unethical? No I don't think it would be unethical per se. I can imagine some companies can be sensitive about other companies being associated with their own, or put against their own. Volks for instance in Japan doesn't like you taking dolls from other companies in their store... which comes into the whole "brand loyalty" sort of thing, so from that standpoint I can understand, culturally, that it may perhaps be offensive... in a certain place and time mainly.

edit: having a hybrid would also drive me crazy because I'd have an incomplete doll sitting there. It's okay if it's a faceup thats incomplete or whatever like that, but a head missing a body? a body missing a head? that would bug me >.> But i can't say I might never do it. Though I think I'd order the head and body from the same company, for reasons as I said above.

    4. I see nothing wrong with hybrids so long as they actually work!!! I tried to put a Lati head on a Pukifee body, but it didn't really work out too well. I just wanted the Lati to have a more flexible body! Oh well!

    5. Sometimes to make hybrid is the only way - for example, I've just bought Unidoll's head and as Unidoll company is closed I can't buy authentic body. And for me is normal to hybrid dolls - some bodies or body parts may not fit tour concept of doll or your esthetic's feeling and you find them from other companies, why not? At last, we buy dolls to make ourselves happier, don't we?=)

    6. Seconding what InkyBear just said. You might want to watch your language a little Jina.
Now I know you might not mean to come off as rude and I get a feeling that you are still quite young.
Here in Sweden everyone curses and nobody thinks much of it. But this is an international forum, based in USA and cursing like that will come off as rude and offensive. At least try not to use the F-word. :sweat

    7. That's not always true - there are many companies (and individual artists for that matter) who only sell heads, or only sell extra parts like wings.

    8. As long as you're happy with your hybrid doll and it works for you, have fun and go for it! There will always be naysayers. And that's fine -- they can play their way, and you yours!

I own a few hybrids and I enjoy them a great deal. I like that they're different.

    9. I love hybrids. I have one at home and one in the making. Since you usually have to work on hybrids to get the head to match the body or the head to fit on the neck, I sometimes think that hybridizing a doll actually helps you bond more with it than a ready to go doll out of a box.

That being said, I'm annoyed by people who have hybrids and then constantly praise their hybrids on how much better they are as opposed to the non-hybridized dolls and urge everyone to only buy heads of a company but not the bodies. For me it's a personal decision to make a hybrid. I give out information willingly but I refrain from preaching to other people.

I guess the main reasons for hybridizing are:
1.) Money. Some people like a certain head from a company but find their bodies to expensive. By buying cheaper bodies they can save a bunch and still get the doll they like.
2.) Movability / posability. Some bodies offer more flexibility when it comes to posing and therefore some people will buy a head they like but prefer to buy a body from another company.
3.) Aesthetics. Some people (especially those who have a character first and then look for a doll to represent that character) have really specific ideas about how their dolls should look. Getting a different body for their dolls will help them getting closer to that idea.
4.) Availablity. Some companies only produce heads so anybody who buys from them simply needs to make a hybrid.

All four reasons are valid reasons to make a hybrid and I don't see why there should be anything bad about it as long as the owner is happy with the result.

    10. I love and hate hybridizing dolls. For the two of mine, however, it's necessary. They came head only: Migidoll (2009 sculpt, I think?) and a Minimee (2007?). Neither of these heads have matching bodies.... and neither of these heads have matching resins.
I like the freedom to choose whatever body I like for my doll, but I HATE that all resins are so different! I have yet to find anything that will even remotely match my MNM head, so I'm going with the closest affordable thing I can find. That doesn't bother me, aside from having to sit around and wait to save up to embody a head I've had for over a year - and hope the resin matches enough that it doesn't drive me nuts.
It's a crap shoot, really, when you have odd sorts of heads that no one, apparently, has been able to match well. And then you have to hope that the lighting in the photo approximates exactly what you're getting, and that the color of your monitor is being honest with you, etc. It's kind of a pain in the butt, yeah. However, it allows me to compose exactly the doll I want, and isn't that what this hobby is all about?

    11. I see nothing wrong with the concept of hybrids. As others have said, sometimes there is simply no choice (for heads that come without bodies to match) and some bodies simply don't pose very well, or look 'strange' to the people who own them, so they swap it for another.

The only thing that bothers me with hybrids is when the owner hasn't paid enough attention to colour matching or size. :( I'm all for people enjoying their own dolls however they wish, but sometimes I see pictures of badly matched heads and bodies and it's very... jarring. :sweat

    12. Oh GOD. All the bobble-headed dolls murder me. At least make sure they're proportionate! That being said, I have seen some truly beautiful hybrids--and own one!

    13. I love hybrids! Sometimes I don't like the body of a certain company, so I try to find a better one for the head. I love to choose a good looking poser!
That is important for me is, that the resin should somehow match and that the proportionate are good!

    14. Gosh, so much has changed since I started this thread!

Well, I've got two hybrids and Dollmore, the company that started my mulling on the hybrid subject, now sells a lot of their dolls' heads separately including Kyle Reese.

Both of my hybrids are heads produced by artists who only make heads so it was a necessity. Though I've considered hybriding others dolls for poseability reasons and stuff, but haven't gotten those yet since I change my mind about as often as it is sunny in southern California...

    15. I really see no reason why making a hybrid would be unacceptable... unless there was someone out there that thinks putting head X on body Y would just completely tarnish head X because the company is just so great, blah blah blah. But even then... this once again comes down to people doing what they want to maximize their enjoyment in the hobby.

If you think head X looks so much better on body Y, you do that, and anyone who has a problem with it can go cry in their corner :D

    16. I see nothing wrong with hybrids, it's all personal taste. I have every intention of making a hybrid at some point, not because it's 'cheap', but because I have yet to find a company that makes both the perfect head and body. (Just the body is almost as expensive as all of my current dolls combined, how is that cheap?!) People can make an issue out of anything, but unless they're buying the doll for me their opinions don't really matter.

    17. The main reason I'm gonna end up hybriding several dolls has everything to do with keeping everyone at the proper height in relation to each other. As an example, my DZ Cherry is 58cm tall, and her friend, my upcoming Oasisdoll Linglan head, is the same height as her in my stories. As lovely as the Oasisdoll body is, it would've made her too tall (60cm), so I had to pass on it in favor of a 58cm body that I have yet to buy.

There are others but I'd hate to ramble ;)

    18. I absolutely love hybrids! They allow you to create the absolutely perfect doll in your eyes. I have one at the moment, but I wouldn't mind having more, in fact I plan on it!
The hard parts about it are that it is sometimes hard to find a resin match that you like, and be certain that the head fits on the neck...etc....
But other than that, it's a neat thing to be able to do!

    19. I don't mind hybrids, seems like some dolls turn out more beautiful when you swap another companies head and body. Others don't I think it depends on the holders taste. Working on a hybrid project, it's hard to find information if company a and b's resin matches, if the head will look right and then saving up. I'd say hybridizing is the most difficult task in the dollyverse.
I hate to say it but I have 3 heads sharing 1 body 2 of them are vinyl, it wasn't planned its just how it is untill they all get bodies, tho this it temporary does it count as hybridizing?

    20. I own hybrids and often prefer them. IF I can get a head and body I like from the same company, that's great! But all of my dolls are original characters and should look a certain way. Like Loki is a DZ Mo head, perfect for him, but the DZ body is just far too childish for a 23 y/o man. The Doll Leaves body was great, but the hands were too thin and feminine for my skater punk, so I got him AoD hands. Sixx is an AoD Tao Hua Dao head, perfect for him, but the old AoD body was too muscular, the new one is too childish. He's also a very thin and weird character. The Doll Chateau body is perfect.

As for resin matching....I like it to be VERY close, but I'd rather deal with a slight difference in color than a childish body or small hands.
