What if someone else opened your doll?

May 26, 2010

    1. My first doll was taken by Customs and I had to send my hubby to pick it up since I work the same hours that the Customs office is open >_< I knew they would open it since they have to determine what it is so they can determine the taxes rates. I had sworn my hubby to open the package himself so the Customs officer wouldn't harm the doll. Afte he had gotten my Sweet he called me to tell everything was ok (and I questioned him about whether the face-up had beed ok and such). When I got home I was mildly disappointed that he had actually left the outer box at the Customs' (so we wouldänt have so much rubbish here) but got over it quickly. I was more irritated that he and especially his friend were hurrying me up with the opening and I couldn't get the pics I wanted.

All other packages I've gotten have been left unopened by him. Which is good, although if he asked first he could open them. I wouldn't all out flip out over someone opening my package, but I'd get irritated if it wasn't for a good reason (like GOs).

    2. I wouldn't care, and would hope that they would throw out the packaging lolz.

    3. I'd be absolutely *livid* if someone opened her! The only exception is if the packing box looks severely damaged. I'm not really sure why the thought makes me so mad, but it does.

    4. There would be pain and blood.

Also frantic phone calls about how to disposes of severed body parts.

    5. I've opened other people's dolls before. Once I did a split with someone, where I got the outfit they got the doll. However they were doing a layaway so the doll was going to be at my place for several months as they paid it off. I did open the doll, to make sure it wasn't damaged during transit. I also took pictures and posted them, to show the future owner that the doll arrived okay, face-up/etc...was what they wanted. And I figured while waiting it would be nice to be able to go to the pictures later for her to just look over.

For me it's not an issue of someone openning up my doll it's more it's my present and I get to/want to unwrap it. Not specifically that it's a doll and I have to. Actually had a problem once where someone's doll was sent to me by mistake. We got together and had a doll openning together (I had a new doll that just arrived as well). And we turned a bad situation into christmas. Sharing the joy of unwrapping with each other.

    6. Hm, if I'm available then I'd prefer to open my doll. But if we know that I won't get to it for days it's better if someone opens it and checks if everything is there and unharmed. Better to have an opened box than an unpleasant surprise out of the claim timeframe^^

I also opened others' dolls. Sometimes when I help local members of the doll community to order their dolls (because they don't speak English or don't have paypal) the box comes to me. They all seemed quite content with me opening their boxes, documenting everything and sending pics before we had the chance to meet. I think making sure the doll is unharmed is much more important than the person who sees them first - and I always carefully pack them up again :)

Thankfully I don't live in a family where I have to worry about others opening my letters/packages without my permission, so I know that if someone else opens my doll, it'll be with my knowledge and approval^^

    7. Like many user here, it would depend on the condition of the arrival. I often work out of town for long periods so my folks have permission to open my packages for me to check on the status and condition of the goods. However, if the individual did not receive permission for opening my package, I would indeed be angry and would confront the person for a good... long talk.

Really, part of the excitement when receiving a new package is the opening process. Doesn't matter if its store bought or shipped, for me its just refreshing to open the package and get that brand new smell... be it plastic or lead... haha :)

    8. I would absolutely hit the roof if someone else opened my doll.

It's bad enough that the only way I could get my husband to quit opening my regular mail was to threaten to report him for it! If he opened one of my dolls there would've been blood.

    9. I would really dislike it very very much when someone else would open my dolls...
Box openings are special to me. There has been such a long excitement from the moment of ordering till arrival, and the excitement is at a climax with a box opening for me. The first sigh of the new doll, the first smell... It is also a part in the bonding process for me.

And I have my own website where I post all the box openings of my dolls. If someone else would open up my dolls, that would mean I missed a box opening on my website too.

    10. Omg, I'd hate that!
When I get my dolls, I shut myself in my room, telling everyone that I want to be left alone until I come out, before opening the box. It's so exciting, and I want to show everyone my new doll, but the opening part... I don't know, it's just so private. I want to see my baby first and 'get to know' him before I can 'share' him with anyone else.

    11. I would hate it if someone opened my doll before I got too it! Luckily chances of that happening are very very slim, I live together with my partner, not with parents, siblings or roommates and my spouse knows better then opening my mail.
In general though, I don't want people opening my mail unless I tell them it's okay, it's something personal, and private. In fact, it's illegal to open someones mail on purpose over here IIRC.
With a doll arriving, there's all the excitement about the new arrival and the unwrapping of everything. So far, every box arrival had me bouncing and they really made my day. I would hate for someone to take that away from me... Again, I don't think this is okay, unless I explicitly tell someone it's okay and I -want- them to open it for me.
Then there's another factor. I don't like it too much if someone just goes and grab/use/poke at/play with my belongings. Don't get me wrong, I don't m,ind sharing at all and am happy to let people use my computer or hold one of my dolls, but again, only if I say it's okay... It's kind of rude if someone comes to visit and they just start pawing at everything like they own the place. Or well, that's how I feel about it :P I'm just talking personal items here, not things like plates and glasses and such.

    12. My housemate often gets packages here, nearly daily, and I rarely do.
More than once she has opened a few of my packages by mistake.

It makes me really upset and almost hurt. I agree that it is very much like a Christmas morning or a birthday when I get a package and open it up.

    13. I would be so angry. I've only had my parents not tell me my doll was at my house. [I was at a friends] And that was bad enough. Opening a doll is such a special thing and for someone else to open it would make me so upset.

    14. Hmmm--no-one would ever dare--except my husband if the box was damaged. My daughters used to help open boxes when they were younger but now that they're grown up they just aren't into the dolls.

    15. I didn't opend one (yet), but I think I would be angry specially if the package was fine and there wouldn't be a reason to open it.

    16. I would be pretty pissed if someone opened my mail or packages without permission. Even if a box looks damaged, I'm sure it can wait until I get home later on that day. The only exception to this would be if I were away for a good period of time, like more than a few weeks. At the same time, I am the only one in the house who really knows what kind of mishaps to look for, so again it's just better to wait.

Someone else opening it would completely ruin the excitement, and that's mainly why I would not be okay with someone else doing so.

    17. The damaged box idea is something that I would excuse.
Often to make sure a damage claim is filed correctly if the box is damaged and not opened on delivery they can deny the claim.
At least I know UPS has tried to deny the claim on me for other items in the past.

    18. Nah, I probably wouldn't care, haha. As long as nothing was damaged in the process. I've had customs open a doll before but that's procedure so I can hardly blame them for that. I find it strange that some people are offended by that of all things. Most of my doll packages are under my dad's name as well, so if it was a law, I'm technically the one breaking it by opening said packages under his name.

I don't see box opening as a very special moment I suppose, not any more. Now it's just another obstacle in finally getting the doll in my hands and in front of me for my scrutiny, heh.

    19. I'd probably be pretty upset if someone did it without my permission, because that'd ruin the fun of the box-opening.
I used my grandmother's address for my latest doll order, because I'm moving up there soon and I was concerned the package wouldn't arrive before I moved, so I told her I was using her address for my doll and said that if the box looked damaged at all she was allowed to open it and check, as long as she put it all back nicely.
So if I gave the person permission to check, I wouldn't care, but if it was just random people opening it I'd bash their heads in!

    20. The only person at the moment who could open my box would be my mom. I believe she wouldn't do that, because she never do so, but if it would happen... I would be kinda upset cos she's smokin and I'm freaked out about that. The smell of nicotine and her skin being soaked by it and touching my doll.. oh my... I'm really obsessed by it. Thats the only reason I could bother.

If my bf would somehow open the box I would only ask "Is he/she safe and sound? All items came in? " Thats the only things that I care when I'm getting the package. He's the one I totally trust coz he knows (and accepts it) how much those dolls mean to me.
