What is the limit??

May 26, 2010

    1. Eh, if I want it that badly compared to x item/items I could be spending y cost on, and I have the finances, it's coming home. I just don't often have the finances...I tend to like the big SD-70cm boys ^^;

Really, I am the sort of person who cannot put a cost limit on happiness, and materialistic as it is I receive happiness from my dolls.

    2. The most I've paid was around $800, which of course meant over $1000 once customs and shipping were added in - and I'm a little conflicted about it, to be honest. On the one hand I can afford it and the doll is fantastic, but it does feel like a little too much to give to something so frivolous. So I'm trying not to go over that again, because it did make me a little uncomfortable - and that kind of feeling is just such a personal thing too.

It's funny, but it's possible (and by that I mean it's happened to me!) to fall for both a cheap doll and an expensive outfit (or designer of outfits) - in that case the clothes are the bigger investment!

    3. I don't have a specific limit...but I've gotten to the point where, for outside reasons, it is hard for me to put new money into the hobby. The only way I can really justify another doll is to re-home a couple of other ones...so my limit is whatever money I make from doll-related sales.

    4. I don't really have a limit, so I guess it's lucky for me that I'm really super picky about who I would actually take home with me -_-* The most expensive doll I've purchased so far was about $950, though.

    5. Right now, I set a limit for myself, and I am using layaway. It's finances mostly.

But I tell you, if I had the cash for one of the real nice Volks or some other really gorgeous doll...I'd spend the money. :/

    6. I think 700 would be my limit but it really depends on the doll, size, extras, how much I have saved up, if I really want it, etc.

Anything higher then 800 is a big no though, I may have second thoughts if its overly awesome and I just have to get it but for now it did not happen and I hope it will never xP

But this is only for the doll... most BJD will cost way more then 1000 after all the things you buy for them xD

    7. BJDs were totally beyond my limit to begin with but my limit seems to be sliding higher and higher! Thankfully I am not interested in Full Sets and just buy basic dolls, but to be honest, if I've got the money and I want something, I'll buy if I think the item looks worth the cash.

    8. Im not sure about my limit of buying bjds....maybe no more than $1000?

    9. @_@ My 'limit' is that one doll cannot be the same price as say... 2- 4 of the ones I currently own. Will I makes exceptions, probably ^^" But that's my general stand.
(But it's not like I have... 5 PukiPukis and I decide to buy an SD :| That's understandable.)

    10. Currently I don't really have a limit, but all my dolls have been around $400. However I'm secretly questing a Dollfie Dream Saber who is over.... 5 grand I think now.... It'd be a loooooong time and some serious luck if I do end up getting her. @_@

    11. My limit would probably go higher based on how long the layaway was. When paying in small increments it doesn't seem as expensive as it really is. Currently I should not buy any new dolls but if I see one I really want I will still offer to buy it if the seller allows a layaway.

    12. Currently I draw the line at $1500 for a full set doll. Last year it was $800, the years prior maybe $600.....it builds up over time.
Having said that....there is one doll I'd probably pay more for but he's a very specific doll...and I suspect he'd be $3000 or more for just his head..... :sweat

I think once you can really appreciate what goes into them or when you finally find the aesthetic that you love and know you won't resell then you are willing to pay a little more for a permanent fixture.

    13. My credit limit is $500CAD, so i've never paid more than that for one order D': I could probably manage something higher if I did a layaway, but I think 500 is a good amount for me atm :p

    14. With mine, i want under 450 dollars with out shipping. the most with shipping is 500 dollars, the one i am buying now is ovr that, but it is my first one XD

    15. My maximum limit is at $1000 regardless of whether there's layaway or not. It would probably increase if I find a Volks or Soom doll that I want badly enough to have. So far though, most of my dolls have been less than $900.

    16. I've brought my most expensive doll, so now it's all smooth sailing from here :D (In the sense that I'll never purchase another 900 doll x3)

These days, the limit is more around the $500 mark (shipping excluded, because it's always expensive to ship to Australia) Luckily, there's not too many dolls I want these days, I'm starting to think that my doll buying days are beginning to cease. (Only to move into clothing 8D)

    17. I'd like to think I wouldn't spend more than an $800 limit - and that's with the addition of clothes and what-not. Not a doll that costs $800. But an individual doll, I'd probably go as far as $5-600 max.

I see a lot of dolls that look really cool all made up to look like whoever, and cost alone $800-1000. And I think why would someone spend a grand on a ready-made doll? If I had a character that just happened to look like that doll, I'd try to browse places that may sell just the head, or something.

If my daughter (as I'm too young for a daughter C: ) came to me and wanted me to buy her a 2ft tall doll that was $1000, I'd say no. I know, as a fan of BJDs, that they're customizable and everything, but it's a doll - not a computer or an iPod. Electronics can do a myriad of things these days, but a doll can only be so much. Not that that's a bad thing. It's just fact.

So, even as I am a fan (and not yet an owner) of these dolls, I wouldn't want a $1000 doll - I mean, even though my limit is between $600 and $800, it's hard enough to save for one that's around $300!

And I know a lot of people say to not 'settle' on a cheaper doll, but sometimes you do. I wanted a Volks SD, but no one would buy one for me, and because I have no job, I didn't have confidence in myself that I could save that much. So, knowing I tried before to save for a doll around $300, I saw a doll on Dollmore's site that I liked that was relatively cheap. People think the cheap dolls are always not as great, but people say that about make-up, too - and a lot of times, the opposite is true.

    18. I don't have a set "X amount of dollars" limit. I just look at the doll and look at the price, then think "Would that doll really be worth that much money to me?" Most of time with the super-expensive dolls, the answer is no. But there are a couple of times I've spent higher amounts, and I'm happy with the results. :)

    19. My limit is $500. Not that I would spend this much money right now, but for me I can't really justify that big of a purchase at this point in my life. ^^; I'm in highschool, and only have a part time job. Plus, I'm also on my own for saving for college so it seems kind of wrong for me to spend more then $300+ on something. Even if I really liked the doll it's just not something I can logically afford.

    20. I used to think my limit was about $600...then I bought Peakswood Cue. I spent more on her than I ever intended but I had been thinking about the purchase for about 2 yrs. So I figured "well, you've given it more than enough thought and...you still want her". So thanks to Peakswood Cue, my limit is about $800-$850. Anything more than that makes me feel a little squirmy...and a little frivolous. Even though I always take care of priorities first, spend my own hard earned money and sew doll clothing to pay for my dolls, I wouldn't feel right spending anything more than $850....Unless the doll was huge...like 4ft tall and fully articulated with a face that melts hearts.
