1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What is the worst part about being a BJD collector/owner?

Dec 20, 2011

    1. The cost! They’re so beautiful, but so expensive :(

    2. for me the worst part is yet to happen, I always carry them around and someday I might accidentally broke them, they hang out with me in the front basket of my bike, in case I got run over by a car, what will happen to me is not my concern

    3. definitely the cost, the "story" aspect mentioned by malvagitabella, and the whole thing about being judged. especially if youre a guy

    4. -The money, everything around the bjd is expensive and I'm not always sure if its worth of it. (I'm talking about the clothes and so on)
-And the time, I realy haven't enough time which I would like to have for my Dolls -_-
-There are to many BJDs I love the mold... but I also know I never can afford every BJD I like, or have a place for them...

    5. The worst part is how addictive the hobby is. I'm sleep deprived and anti-social and my bank account is empty. But it's all worth it to buy a new doll or new clothes or new props.

    6. The worst parts for me are how much dolls cost and the fact that there are so many cool bjds out there. There are so many on my wish list and it sucks that I can't afford them. Also the waiting. >w<

    7. The wait. Hands down, this is the hardest part for me currently. I ordered my first 2 dolls on October 16th and I have no idea how much longer I'll have to wait for them, but it seems like I won't get them until after Christmas. Possibly not until after the start of the New Year.

I also agree with others who have said clothing/wig shopping. Finding a wig that I liked for my incoming PukiPuki was a major hassle and I still haven't gotten her or my PukiFee any shoes because the ones I want are sold out and any time I do find shoes for both of them, they're from different retailers. So there's where cost comes in. I want these things, but how does one justify shipping for a single pair of itty bitty BJD shoes? I wish Etsy had more options for shoes for BJD tinies.

I also have the added factor of my husband hating dolls. He is coming around bit by bit and I'm somewhat hopeful that he'll warm up to the tinies, but I can never really ask for a second opinion because he is the only one besides my mother-in-law who knows I have started buying BJDs and he won't give input because the only input he has is, "They're all creepy." I can at least get his opinion on outfits sometimes. He has much more fashion sense than I do, so I'm kind of hoping he'll help me plan out some characters in the future. The main thing that makes this a problem is when I'm browsing the web, looking at dolls. And he'll be sitting on the couch and he'll look over at my screen and shout something like, "OMG CREEPY!" :doh

    8. For me, it's the cost, no doubt. I'm also a fan of traveling, and to choose between travels and dolls isn't my favourite thing to do. I try to minimize the costs as much as possible - like buying second-hand things, join GO's, sew my own doll clothes - but it's frustrating to always have to analyze every little cost xD

    9. Yeah, cost and the SPACE. Go me, I had to collect mostly SDs and they take up a seven foot bookshelf in my room.

    10. The cost, yes. And the obsession.

    11. There's a worst part? It's an extremely expensive hobby, and it can consume your life and your space, but somehow those things just remind me of how very lucky I am to have dolls, clothes and some nice things for them.

I guess for me, the worst part (if there is a worst part) is putting so much time into a photostory or photoshoot, and then finding people aren't really interested.

    12. somnifer,
I know what you mean about folks not appearing to be interested. But please remember that a while lot of people don't reply to a Gallery thread, but they do look. Keep your eye on the view counts of your threads not the replies.
But yeah, it does feel disheartening to not get any replies on a Gallery thread at all :/

    13. This is true, ikke777. I should probably point out that I'm not complaining about DoA specifically either. Generally, I find members here are a lot more engaged than other places, and I appreciate that very much.

    14. money - bec theyre just too expensive >.< but they worth it anyway =)
shipping time - it takes forever >.< u need to have a long patience for this. and unfortunately, im an impatient person haha

    15. For me the worst part is not just the cost of the doll itself... it's everything else! Somehow I can swallow the $500-1000 for a doll part just fine - they're hand-crafted collectors items, after all, stuff like that is expensive - but then on top of that you've got to pay another couple hundred for eyes, wig, and faceup, plus tiny clothes and shoes that cost more than my own, etc etc. It really adds up!

    16. Clothes selling out! This is especially heartbreaking on the Volks USA website.

Finding photos of a limited head sculpt doll that you think is adorable but can't buy normally anymore. Then finding out about high aftermarket prices!

    17. Expense. And feeling guilty about not spending time with an inanimate object.

    18. -The cost, especially when other people are like 'that doll cost how much?!' and don't understand what goes into making them.

-The fact that they aren't as big in Australia, so I have to pay more for shipping (especially from America) for dolls and accessories, and i have to wait longer for things to arrive.

    19. I have to say that I agree with you Slytherclaw, the wait is positively killer! That probably ties with the cost for the most annoying thing about this hobby.

    20. The cost and long period of waiting. The second is the only reason for me to buy "second-hand" dolls. Last month I ordered a new doll from Soom and feel myself betrayed somehow due to a long period of waiting.
