What is the worst part about being a BJD collector/owner?

Dec 20, 2011

    1. I have to second the posts about cost and time spent waiting. It is an expensive hobby, but one of the worst costs is shipping. I'll pay for the doll but I don't want to pay $100 or more to ship it.

    2. While I agree that the cost sucks, to me it's not the worst thing. To me the worst thing is Limited dolls, I'm still new to the hobby and looking around I see these beautiful dolls that in my eyes cost and waiting don't matter. Only to notice the doll is gone, and has been for a long time. I have been looking for a centaur and the Chrion one that Souldoll sold has been gone for a almost a year with no idea when they will be back.

    3. I have yet to find anything really bad about his hobby. The people in it are amazing. The dolls are gorgeous. Yes, the prices of the dolls and shipping are high, but if you want it badly enough, you pay for it. I was without paying work (due to caring for my mother 24/7 for 4 years before she died) for a long time, so it took me years to save up for enough money for a second doll, so my first doll has over 50 pieces of unique OOAK hand made clothing, I am a professional seamstress, I had to do something with my hands. My second doll, a Carina by Iplehouse will be here next week, and I can't wait to start making her clothes! If I have one small complaint, it is difficult to find fabric with small enough print to use for doll clothes. The same goes for trims and notions as well, it's hard to find things small enough.... and if anyone knows where to find 1/4inch jean snaps I wish they would tell me where they found them!

    4. rosalynmouse,
I'm so jealous! I have a Iplehouse YID and I'd so want one of the bigger dolls. As a sewer myself I can tell you will have a great time sewing for Iplehouse; they are so easy to handle when fitting and posing!

Yeah, getting small enough prints for dolls is big problem. One place to look is at quilting fabric. I'll PM with info where I got some great snaps.

    5. Right now the worst thing is not having any time to play with my dolls!

    6. I think everything about this would have to be related to the prices.
      -cost
      -criticism of cost
-lack of dolls due to cost
-can't do faceups by myself because I can't buy a proper mask
      :shudder

Ah, actually, I really wish I had more time for them.
But I guess that applies to everything in life. :)

    7. Another one I just thought up.

Hair is my Achilles Heel. I have absolutely zero experience dealing with any kind of hair of any significant length. I really need to do something about a few of my dolls' hair :blush

    8. If there's anything, I' have to say, not having enough money to buy all the dolls I want. :lol:Or having enough room. And, yes, of course, not having enough time to play with them as well.

    9. Shipping distances. Shipping costs. Customs and Custom Fees. And all that can happen to the doll during the shipping.

    10. The difficulty in finding shoes for a specific doll...The problem in finding the right big but it being too big...The overall price!

    11. The cost is the biggest problem for me.

    12. The worst parts for me are the reactions from people, the cost, and the wait. Also, finding the right clothing/wigs/shoes for the right dolls, I find that very difficult for some reason.

    13. I hate realizing how much I've spend on each doll after I've bought them, their clothing, shoes, wigs, eyes, and other stuff.

I hate the cost of dolls like everyone else but I really hate it when new companies ask the same amount for their dolls as an old company asks for theirs.

I hate most shipping prices. I can understand paying high shipping prices for a factory fresh doll but the shipping for used dolls is sometimes pretty ridiculous.

    14. I don't think the waiting time is a bad thing, because it's definitely to be expected and helps build the joy of when your doll arrives home (unless you're suspecting faulty transactions).

I'm not able to appreciate my dolls whenever and wherever. If I bring them into public they suddenly become a burden, so if I want to enjoy them it has to be in the privacy of my own room. I can't enjoy my "collection" the way everyone else enjoy their collections.

It's so difficult to get a new doll, especially if you're in college and have no money to spare and relatives who wouldn't spend a penny on you, either way.

It's hard to find and buy artsy supplies! :O

Figuring out exactly what doll I want in my "collection" is easier now, but in the past it was between liking every other doll, wanting my dream doll (which is very expensive and soon to be no longer produced), and wanting my character dolls.

I suck at sewing and the works, so I couldn't dream of making anything for my dolls :\ My mom can sew, but she likes taking shortcuts and adding her own touch to it, and after that... well... I end up saying something along the lines of "I didn't ask for leather pants?! And why are there pockets? They're HUGE!"

    15. I hate the customs I have to pay for dolls ! Why are they so high ? And the waiting , not the waiting for the company, but when you know your doll , item or clothes have been shipped but just don't arrive at your home ! Then you begin fearing how much customs are gonna charge again.

    16. No money and no time. So yeah, echoing the whole cost thing really, that's obviously gonna be a real pain in a hobby this expensive! Time as well, I'm a busy student and this hobby demands time if you want to get things right. Time on practicing face-ups, sewing etc. that I just don't have!

    17. The cost and never being done, there is always another that I want even when I swear the last one was the last one lol. also the criticism, people tell me they are creepy and weird.

    18. One word "TEMPTATION" .

    19. When you fall out of love with a sculpt you want...

    20. I have to agree with you with the shipping. I'd like to easily just go out and buy something for my doll and bring it home. And although I've accepted the cost, I still don't like it. I guess how people see me when they see me with a doll or come over, also kind of bothers me. Not very much, but just a little. Our room mate bothers me most of all. His comments... bother me... is the nice way to put it I guess. No one else's comments bother me like his do.
