1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What is the worst part about being a BJD collector/owner?

Dec 20, 2011

    1. 1. Cost
      2. Patience that is needed in the hobby
      3. Incomprehension from people inside and out of the hobby
      4. Fragility (yellowing and/or damage)
      5. Health issues involved with doing your own face-up
      6. Room needed for BJD and their supplies
      7. Elitism and intolerance in the hobby
      ...

I guess the above are pretty much the standard issues. The thing I hate the most is having to purchase accessories for a BJD without being able to try it on said BJD first. Second pet peeve must be the hefty custom fees I keep getting...hate it!

    2. For me, the cost. I want so many dolls, but I am only 15 and I have to save up for my own.

Hoping to buy a Minifee for my next doll around next year :)

Also, finding clothes. It's really hard for me to find clothes that I haven't seen on any other doll. Especially Etsy sellers.
I've learned that custom clothing orders are the way to go for me.

    3. I agree with the money issue here. This is an expensive hobby and for only the clothing it's prized what human sized clothing are. So definitely it's the prizes.

    4. MONEY is the worst things~! when you saw those gorgeous and nice clothes~! and you are lack of money for them, its a nightmare for e :(

    5. Not enough money or space for everything I want. At least I'm getting better at embellishing homemade doll clothes so they don't all look horribly plain.

    6. Echoing everybody else: Money, money, money.

    7. Just as everyone said, money. Another thing is my friends and family who don't understand the hobby. Some of my friends and sister are terrified of them.

    8. To me it's mostly...
      1. The fact that you can never have enough due to the endless possibilities
      2. The feeling when you look at your bank account :|

    9. For me, it's not so much about money. I recognize when I can afford a luxury item and when I cannot. My responsibility as a young adult who does need to think about finances is to first maintain the expenses of my education and home life before I can think about spending money on hobbies. I am okay with not being able to afford expensive art toys.

What I find to be the most frustrating is finding clothes and shoes that suit my doll styles! I am not a skilled tailor, and I couldn't make a pair of shoes to save my life, so I have to shop for them or commission them. And when the popular styles are "pastel goth" and Coachella as we recover from steampunk and visual kei, I have a really hard time finding anything for my rather simple tastes! It's even worse to find non-chunky shoes to fit my dolls that don't look like they belong to kindergarteners. Money is not an issue if I can't find anything to buy!

    10. I think the worst thing for me is the fear that I could damage or lose my dolls. What if one got dropped and was damaged? I try to be super careful, but accidents happen. Mailing a doll to someone for a faceup is scary for me. What if the package got lost? One doll I have was company painted on its body because it's a fantasy creature. I accidentally scratched it although I tried to be so careful with it. I can do a small mod to repair it, but still, I was so disappointed that it happened. It seems like it wasn't sealed well on that one part of the body, so it scratches super easily there. But the doll also doesn't stand or pose as is. It needs sueded and maybe wired, and I will have to be extremely careful when I do that not to damage the paint further. Anxiety!

    11. Yep, this. My girls are currently nude and bald for this very reason.

    12. Besides $$$, arms and legs can be a devil to wrangle in pictures!

    13. I have accepted the cost of what i dearly love, and i still am in the process of accepting the waiting time and even when the company breaks their limit of waiting time. Shipping, i have accepted it. What i don't accept is when i go out and i get people staring at me because i have a doll in my hands. Some look at me and comment as "she is an attention Whore and just wants to look like a child". Or the fact that my family thinks that my dolls are creepy and just money waste.

    14. Ugh, I don't know if this is the "worst" thing that I think of the hobby. more like a Peeve.

People who post in the Box Opening/Arrival gallery and just POST LINKS!!!!

I came to look at photographs not click your stupid links! The Forum is called a GALLERY! it means that it should at least contain at least one visible photo in the OP.

    15. I'd say for me the worst thing is the worries during the wait time. The anxiety that I might end up disliking the sculpt kills me. D:

    16. Mine hasn't arrived yet but so far the biggest problems are, like most people have already pointed out, the cost.
      - the cost of the doll (which is the most fair one so I can still accept it)
      - the cost of the clothing (as a shopaholic it's easy to tell some companies have very poorly and cheaply made clothes, yet sell it at premium prices)
      - the cost of shipping (it's quite obvious some companies overcharge on ems shipping)
      - the cost of custom charges (like with every other niche hobby, your country wants you to buy their own products, but they don't even have what you want, to add on to the pain some places will open your box and touch everything all over with their disgusting hands, and they'll charge you extra for their "work" which includes holding on to your items for longer and messing up the content in your box)

I have other similar hobbies too so I can tell it's not going to be much of a difference. Except everything will be worse for bjds since they're bigger and cost more, and not as durable. I just hope the person at the customs who will handle my package will have some manners.

    17. of course the cost, but being scared to tell people "i like to buy expensive dolls!" for fear of criticism definitely is another downside.

    18. The cost, i'm still a student so i have to sacrifice a lot to buy things for my Yukiyasu, but it's not that i suffer from it or anything, i'm saving money for him voluntarily and i'm happy that way =]

Actually, the most fearsome thing for me is the criticism from other people, "OMG, how could you spend that amount of money on a doll?", "Ew, they are creepy", "Still playing with doll, how old are you?" blah blah, i hate it T^T But i'm lucky enough to have a wonderful dad who understands, so yea =]

    19. First is the yellowing or greening of the doll. That is an absolute nightmare. You have payed so much money and waited so long for your doll and it is just frustrating when the doll starts change color. Personally I like NS and i just cant stand it when it starts to yellow=(
Second is waiting time. Sometimes it just take way too long and it hard to wait)))

    20. I browse the MP because I love looking at owner photos, and I often kick myself when I see a new post for an LE I have on my wishlist --- always seems to happen when I don't have the money to afford him/her. So I guess I echo everyone else: "money, money, money." (I do hope those LEs find good homes; just wish it were with me, ha!)
