1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What is the worst part about being a BJD collector/owner?

Dec 20, 2011

    1. Not enough. Not enough dolls, not enough clothes and shoes and items for them, not enough money, not enough time to save up, not enough room to store everything, gaaah!!!

    2. For me (a poor poor student under 18) limited dolls that I want is the worst about the hobby.

Or Doll-Zone discontinuing MSD Anson, who I'd hoped to save up for (I'll never get her:...().
Oh.. and on that note, people who just don't get why it matters at all.

    3. Worst for me is:
      1. you don't have enough munny to spend on your grail dolls or limited edition dolls
      2. maintaining them- hard enough for me 'cause of my daily life schedule (school and work is really a headache)
      3. restringing- really, I was murmuring(curses and all) on my room when I restrung one of my dolls

    4. I think money is too easy to say, we all admit that dolls are hard on the pocketbook. The hardest part about being a doll owner, for me, is keeping him safe! I live in a 3 bedroom apartment with six people and 6 animals. If it isn't rough housing shaking the walls, it's chasing the cats out of my room so they don't push him off a ledge. I would like to keep my doll on display more often, but for his safety he's usually stuck in his box unless I need to size clothing on him. :/

    5. That feeling that you always have to check up on new releases from a company that only mostly offers limiteds.

I hate having missed out a chance on a doll that could have been obtained for a cheaper price than the second-hand market demands. It's akin to the feeling of having an item that breaks down only a day or two after its warranty date expires. :|

    6. the general dislike people have of you and your dolls

    7. Yeah, that's definitely annoying. :/ I had someone ask me to bring my doll to school because they wanted to see it and then they spent the rest of the day calling it creepy and making fun.

    8. well it would be plain stupid for me to really talk to them, being a man its really uncool, though I still tell more people about them then say warhammer lol

    9. Yeah. The only reason anyone found out I had one is because they saw me knitting/crocheting clothing for it between classes. I hang out with nothing but guys, one of which even crochets too! But apparently owning a doll is just too much. :<

    10. being straight and collecting dolls baffles many, many people
its not exactly something that is your best feature to put forward

    11. I don't see why not. One of my D&D pals sculpts and paints his own figurines, a pastime we share. But apparently figurines (which are, let's face it, tiny dolls on stands) are manly whereas my 60cm bjd is not worthy of time or attention except to make fun of.

I'd say I don't get it, but I do. It's more a cultural infrastructure thing than anything to do with the dolls. Props to you for keeping up the hobby.

    12. hasn't been an easy one, let me tell you

    13. I don't doubt it. I was checking out your list of dolls on your profile and noticed how several of them are female sculpts. It's a lot like straight guys who play female avatars in MMO's. It has nothing to do with gender adherence and purely to do with aesthetics, am I right?

Plus, you can seriously customize dolls. Different face ups, wigs, clothing, bodies, etc can all make two versions of the same sculpt look like completely different dolls. I find the most appealing thing about BJDs to be the creative control you've got over them. You'd think this would appeal to more people!

    14. more so I've not found many male dolls I liked the look of, most are extremely feminine and really don't fit for the characters I have planned
creativity is hard for some people, and even if it isn't some people won't like it

    15. I know what you mean about the overly feminine male sculpts. I have 6 males I'd like to make, but finding masculine enough bodies/jaws is a hard job. I like Iplehouse's Super Hero body sculpt, and also the fact that they have some of the best tan/dark tan resins but they are so expensive. ><

And you're right. Leaving aside the people that just flat out don't like dolls, there are many who like things pre-made and don't really want to be creative or don't see a point in working on a blank slate when a full set is available.

    16. there's a lot I want to do but have little drive to do it, mostly because my idea's seem so bizarre and out there people glaze over them. I have other hobbies too, and the dolls are not the main focus of my money

    17. I like to think that we all have other hobbies (although some threads would suggest otherwise >.>). I'm curious though, since you mentioned that your ideas are 'bizarre'... what would you have planned for male dolls should you find proper sculpts?

    18. The cost! Of course. Second would be the waiting. I hate the waiting for something I've already bought.
Third would be not being in a doll friendly household! I'm and adult living at home until my career pans out and I can buy my own place. (rent here is Insane as are housing costs)
So trying to cramp 30+ dolls into one little bedroom along with all my other hobbies etc. I don't evne have room for buying their clothings, wigs, shoes etc. Never mind props!
Once I have my own place it'll be fine. They'll get their little corner but oh man is it squeeze right now!

    19. For me: not having enough space and time!

I'd love to have a room just for my hobby, where I can expose my dolls, have an angle for sewing and costomizing and of course there should be a lot of light to take wonderful pics! And then time! This is for me the hardest about this hobby, not having enough time to dedicate to my creativity and my beloved dolls. I have so many plans I want to realize but whether the time nor the space to do so :(

    20. My worst parts:
      - When other collectors act silly in so many ways, for example when they want to be sooo uniqe and special and get grumpy when you get the same doll/wig/whatever. I mean; if you want to be that uniqe you have to but reallt limited dolls or make your own, sorry.

      - The waiting time. Sure, the cost is a huge thing, but since Im willing to pay its not the worst.. But the waiting, ammagad. It's so hard! I want her NOW!

      - Not having any friends (that live in my town/that I know since before the hobby) who understands it and would like to join.
