What is your favorite doll size and why

Jan 14, 2010

    1. After being in the hobby for 10 years, I think I've found my favorite size to be Mini/45cm. I also have a couple smaller that I quite like. I do have a 60cm boy and a 70cm boy, and while I do love them, I think they are just too big for me. Would I consider more 60+cm dolls for characters? Most definitely. But my favorite size is definitely minis.

    2. I started with Luts Delf, 52cm was a lot to start with. I plan to go smaller, though I want to keep the matured theme of the dolls. I'm not very into juvenile or infant dolls. Fairyland dolls are hot on my list, alongside Lillycat and Nobles Dolls. But those are far off from my reach yet.

    3. I like MSDs. They arent too big but not too small. I find them cute and manageable however when it comes to boy dolls i am learning I may like SDs better. I got my first SD recently and I love him but at the same time im getting use to him being not an MSD. I hope to get my first yosd soon.

    4. i prefer minifรฉe size

    5. I think MSD is my favorite size. I do wish there were even more truly-adult-looking mature minis, but there are still some and I don't mind going cuter/more stylized-- I don't really do child characters, and most of the reason behind my getting any given doll is to shell a character.

As much as I love looking at the REALLY big dolls, between not having a whole lot of physical space for display and storage, and being short with a bad back, handling a very large doll is difficult. Any given day, my ability to pick up something heavier or just unweildy in size/shape varies wildly, but I've never been too weak/injured to handle my mini guys. It's a nice pleasant weight to have sitting on me sometimes, though-- tinies are certainly cute and easy to play around with, but they lack a satisfying weighty presence sometimes. Plus for carrying, the minis fit comfortably in the crook of my arm-- plus their little butts are perfectly hand-sized for easy carrying even when my arms are full of other stuff. I have a lot of fun posing my tiny boy, but Vince is always my go-to for cuddling.

It's just a really nice happy medium between something being too big or too small-- plus it's the easiest size to do a faceup on, in my experience.

    6. The most of my dolls are msd but I like Yosd the most.. and don't know why ..

    7. When I bought my first doll I though that 1/4 scale was perfect for me because it was kind of right in the middle, but then I wanted to put doll in houses and I was like the 1/12 scale dolls are so cute and small and they make so many cute miniatures for them. I recently got my first 1/3 scale doll and I love him. He has so much potential, and it would be easier to make things for that scale doll because they're much bigger and its easier to add that extra detail.

    8. I prefer SD size. They are huge, heavy, realistic and I looove it!

    9. I tend to like 70 cm because I feel like bigger dolls just suit me more. Plus, I still live with my parents and I know if I bought a small one my mom would be a bit upset that I spent a lot of money on something so small.

    10. I don't own any dolls right now at the moment, but all for now I think I'd prefer an MSD. I like SDs too but they seem a bit big for me.

I don't know if there are any threads like this, so if there is one, I'm sorry! >.<

    11. I like the smaller sizes, although I am ordering a SD body to match a head I impulse bought. Loved the face and couldn't say no. Right now I like the smaller ones because I have always liked things in miniature. Raised miniature horses, even. Portability is also a bit of a factor. Smaller is easier for me to carry around.

    12. So true! Lol

    13. I also have a couple of tiny dolls gotten specifically for pictures with my pet scorpion, so needed things a bit more to scale, although I am considering doing some shots with larger dolls and the scorpion as well.

    14. At first I was really into larger, SD sized dolls but now I like MSDs as my standard size, with smaller dolls being the MSDs children or just younger characters.

    15. I prefer large dolls, preferably in the 57-70cm range, though I do have an 80cm. They are not as easy to carry around, but I do that so rarely, it isn't really a factor. On the plus side, they are easier to paint and craft for.

    16. That's probably true. It's a big harder to craft for smaller dolls. I did that for my barbie when I was little... Very hard. :/

    17. I really prefer the bigger dolls (70-80cm range). There's something more aesthetically pleasing to me about having a taller doll that looks more mature.

    18. I prefer SD, in the 56-63cm range. Most of my characters are teen or adult humans, and I feel like there are a lot more options in this range for mature sculpts and bodies. I also find a lot more shoe and clothing options, and it's easier for me to do faceups and sew for SD.

I do also own some tinies, and I like them for travel or taking to dollmeets, and it's easier to find furniture and props for them.

    19. When I first started (over 10 years ago) I preferred MSD and bought a whole bunch. Since then, I've sold all of them except one, my first doll. Now I like SD, 50cm and up. I even have a Dollmore Trinity doll which is about 105cm. She REALLY heavy, but I don't mind. I kind of enjoy the "workout".

However, I prefer doing faceups on my tinies. I don't know why but it's actually easier for me. Maybe because I don't have to make a straight line for as long as I would on a bigger doll?? Lol.

    20. I love that you've created this thread, because I've been wondering the same thing!
I have my first doll coming in the post--an msd. It took me ages to decide between an sd and an msd.
I decided that if I liked msd, I would stick with this size, and if I craved something larger my next purchase would be an sd.
I just think that an sd might be all limbs lol, we'll see after my msd comes in!
