What is your style like when it comes to dolls?

Jan 6, 2017

    1. I total agree. I'm very excited to see how things will change for me or even not ;)

    2. Haha yes it is quite exciting isn't it? :)

    3. My style has definitely changed since I started.
At first, I wanted to have cute, chibbi dolls that were around 1/6 size. That had an enchanted forest/cottage core vibe. However, I realised a couple of months after getting my first doll, that while did like cutesy small dolls, it's not what I wanted to create or have the whole of my collection to be.
Now I prefer realistic, mature msd dolls with a high fantasy esthetic. Many of which are my shelled dnd characters.

    4. When I first started collecting I went with ¼, I didn't think I would want anything much bigger then a Barbie. Once I started with ⅓ and larger it was all over for the poor shelved ¼ dolls. I like looking at my ¼ dolls but I don't do too much with them right now, I am all about the bigger dolls. I also have a few ⅙ and smaller ones, I think they are super cute little kids, but I have all of those I want right now. Sometimes I wish I had just started with the ⅓ dolls.

As far as aesthetic, I like humans, realistic looking humans. I am not counting actual animal pets for the dolls, pets are fine, but I don't like animal fantasy parts, I draw the line after magnetic ears that go on top of a normal human head. I just find human/animal dolls creepy, and it's fine if other people love them, I just don't.

I don't like my females to have too big of breasts. I just don't like them, some people want all the bosoms in the world, and I await my extra busty lady dolls with a dremel and sand paper.

I prefer male dolls. I have only two female ⅓ dolls out of twelve larger dolls. One girl has had that bust reduction I mentioned. I think I prefer male dolls, because most of my friends in real life are male, and I just get along a lot better in person with guys. So, I am more comfortable having the male dolls. I just relate to the dolls better, if that makes sense.

Clothing wise, they just wear normal street clothes. It's weird, because by own style bounces between pastel goth and fairy kei, but my dolls look like 'normal' people. My ¼ dolls are dressed nicely because they are shelved right now, but my ⅓ dolls just wear street fashion, jeans and t-shirts mostly. Maybe I'll change this up one day. My ⅙ dolls and Tiny's are dressed adorably in play clothes.

Expressions, I like teeth, but not too much teeth. I smiles pouts and other expressions, but only if they are subtle. I like to be able to see different emotions from them, so I find the more neutral faces more appealing.

I think it is awesome that you are sculpting your own doll,I bet the doll is going to be really cute in that oddly adorable alien kind of way!

    5. Mine hasn't changed too much but I love 1/12 and 1/8 or 1/10 scale tinies. I love miniatures, and woodland sprites, so my dolls have always reflected that. I also love dolls that look very doll like, so not too articulated or realistic bodies and faces and very simple face ups, in that sense Bluefairy is probably my favorite for tinies and msds :)

    6. My style has definitely changed a bit, but not that much I think.
I haven't changed scales at all and I don't think I will. From the beggining I knew I didn't want anything larger than 1/4 and my current collection includes two 1/4, one 1/6, and three 1/8.
On the other side, I always thought I wanted all realism as far as sculpts and characters go, so my first three were plain humans with more or less realistic features and bodies. And that part is where I've changed the most. It took me a time to understand that my everyday average characters were not bad, but they simply weren't interesting enough for me to make me want to do things with them like taking pictures or even taking them out of the cabinet.
Nowadays, only one the 1/6 remains a 'normal human' (the 1/8s are anthros, and the 1/4s are a vampire and a sorcerer) and I'm much more engaged with them and the hobby in general.

    7. I like cute dolls with big heads. I'm still determining what my style is other than that.

    8. I prefer semi realistic looking faces. The style is a mix of street smart and uni student. The guys all look like regular guys in how they are dressed. The girls are a bit more stylish, but in a modern way. Nothing historical or fantasy, even though I do have some elf dolls.

    9. I love the larger dolls, though I think the 73cm boy I have coming may end up being too much (mostly because it's so difficult to find clothes that will fit him! Why are these sizes so different? Hehehe). Mature is definitely what I prefer, and for me they gotta have some sort of expression going on. I know a lot of people love the neutral look, so they can project more of what they want onto the doll. But I want the doll to speak to me, and it's very hard if they're not telling me how they feel. A smile, a frown, something (my first doll is an impldoll Joshua, as an example lol)!

As for "ugly" dolls...it depends. I don't want picture-perfect pretty. Personality, personality, personality xD A crooked smile, an odd nose (I've fallen in love with the Gray sculpt for his nose, for instance). I don't like more horror/creepy themed dolls, but I absolutely *adore* more realistic looking animalistic sculpts! Miracle Doll's Dio spoke to me the moment I saw him, and I'm so happy I was able to snag one even though I missed the official window xD And I know that's a sculpt a lot of people would consider ugly, but I love him!

    10. Things might change for me since I’m still pretty new, but I definitely prefer a slightly more realistic and mature look to human dolls. I just don’t really want a childlike doll for some reason, unfortunately lots of my favorite sculpts are all 1/3 size since those tend to look more mature (I don’t have the money or space in my house for 1/3 dolls…) I do prefer semirealism over completely realistic dolls though, if that makes sense… I’d rather have a luts doll than an iplehouse one for example. Size wise I’m probably gonna stick to 1/4, mayyybe 1/6 if I find a doll I really like of that size.

When it comes to anthro dolls though, I adore the more stylized look. It looks less weird to me to give animal characters weird proportions, for humans it gets into uncanny valley territory real quick where with animals it stays cute and pretty. Also with animal inspired dolls I love the tinies SO much, I want one so bad to keep in my bag wherever I go!

    11. I collect mostly 60cm or larger, with a couple 50-55cm doll. I tend to prefer slightly more realistic sculpts with smaller eyes, but that’s not a rule. I have a Feeple.
I like variety and do like less conventional looking dolls. I would like to get more older looking dolls.
For style, if varies by doll from sweaters and jeans to rococo, though the dolls tend to be frillier than I am.

    12. I mostly have sd dolls I style the guys from anywhere to what in currently to laid back looks like oversized knit sweaters, and usually ripped up jeans.
For the girls I like to dress them in clothes I would never be able to wear:XD: (don’t feel comfortable/confident to wear them) whatever is current, or Really cutesy stuff. I love dresses.
I really love for my dolls to have knit or crochet hats

    13. In my case, I love smaller dolls (1/6 or smaller, mature tinies or more "regular" tinies) since I collected 1/6 fashion dolls for a very long time. I tried MSD dolls though, experiencing with a MiniFee (my favourite type of dolls when I first found out about BJDs) although, I felt this size was too big for me, so when I found out about Tiny Matures, I knew this was the type of dolls I would prefer.

In terms of aestheticism, I like dolls with quite an adult/mature look and with more realistic proportions (especially the head size, for some reason I could never catch with heads way bigger than the body). Recently I also got a huge interest for fantasy dolls : elves, fairies, mermaids, other dolls with wings and so on.

About gender, I always preferred female dolls because I feel more inspired in terms of restyle and sewing, but I also like male dolls to have diversity in my collection and develop characters. And I am not much into animal dolls, except the little deers from Nympheas dolls which are the cutest :love but I might get interested in other ones later

    14. My doll style is more like beautifully creepy, so im attracted to more doll like dollchateau or dollzone dolls.

    15. Sculpt-wise I love dolls with a little bit of asymmetry or imperfections in their facial features, my recent obsession is over Kanadoll's sculpts because if you were to look closely, their faces are not 100% even!

What I enjoy the most out of my dolls is being able to dress them up in styles I know I can never pull off!

I have different dolls that serve different styles, from the comfy sweaters to lolita to punk.

    16. I generally like moody and curvy dolls! something about them is so cute :)

    17. Semi realistic... the classic big headed bishes... Usually dressed in like lolita or semi-historical fashion..I don't want to seem shallow but I probably wouldn't like an intentionally ugly or creepy doll, but.. it also depends, like if the doll were to look like Sadako I probably wouldn't mind too much but like, intentionally grotesque dolls with like, really detailed wounds or skin textures... not for me?

    18. I just started in this hobby so my taste is more "dolls I like looking at" rather than "dolls I actually own" haha

I like creepy, unusual looking, or modded dolls most! I usually don't like childish looking or chibi dolls unless they're animal/anthro

    19. I'd say I prefer mature minis, but I looked at my collection and found more chibis than mature minis :o

I also like unusual looking dolls, but they don't usually come in mini size though :(

    20. If I had to describe my style when it comes to dolls, I think it's easier for me to eliminate what I'm not drawn to versus what I'm drawn too. I'm not a fan of the anime styled dolls (though I've seen plenty of lovely ones!) and prefer sculpting in the fact. I also don't like dolls that are so over the top it takes away from their ability to stand/pose, meaning unique bodies that aren't quite functional. I wouldn't say I steer away from "ugly" dolls, but I don't think I own a doll one would consider "ugly." I do prefer minis as they are just way easier for me to handle and store.
