What originally got you into BJDs?

Jan 19, 2010

    1. Same as many others, I was browsing DA and found a bjd pic caught my eye. I thought it was a real person (There were no surrounding objects to indicate the size scale.) Then I investigated enough to realize he was a doll and was shocked at how beautiful and real he was.

    2. Pretty much starring at the doll pics on Danny Choo's website on my work computer.

    3. I just came across them one day and fell in love with their detail and how much you could personalize them.

    4. A friend up at college showed us some that she had with her. At first I was a little apprehensive, since I was never a doll person, but after she showed me one I absolutely fell in love with I began getting interested in them. Plus, they're a good creative outlet for my clay works!

    5. I was looking for unusual Christmas presents for my sister, I typed "Creepy dolls" into the search engine, with OOAK customised porcelain/baby dolls in mind, I'm sure you've seen them. Anyway, I wasn't impressed and on the 5898th website I trawled I saw a pic of DIM Achernar. I.Fell.In.Love.Instantly! I love his cute little face, he looks so cheeky, and he reminds me of Peter Pan from the recent movie. I showed my sister his pic, purely to squee, but she went behind my back and bought him for me for Christmas! Then she became hooked too...

    6. I first learned about BJDs around three years ago at an anime convention. I saw on their timetable that there was a BJD panel and asked my friend what it was (I have to say, at first, I was thinking it was something dodgy because of the letters ^^; ) and she told me a little bit about them but didn't really go into detail.

Then, some time later she found a BJD that she fell in love with and started to show me pictures of him and other BJDs on a pretty regular basis, but, being a guy, I kept my interest in them to myself as I thought people would think I was "weird" or something for liking dolls. Since then I have decided I don't really care what people think, since for one thing, it isn't weird and for another, it's up to me what I enjoy and what I choose to spend my time and money on.

Anyway, recently she has been saying I should get one (which she says to everybody XD ) and I decided to take the plunge, which surprised her since she thought I had no real interest in them. I then started saving up for a doll of my own and began scouring the internet for a sculpt I liked. I've now found three that I want, but can't even afford one. :sweat

So in short, my friend got me into BJDs.

    7. I've known the exsitance of BJD for...many years, but was never interested in them.
And one day the top BJD came up in the conversation I had with one of my friend, I was bored so I started checking out the doll companies website.
Nothing still stood out to me at that point, except when I saw Luts' JDF Terra, who just happened to came out at that month, and then I fell in love just like that xD
He has converted me into a total doll person. xD

    8. Huh... I was ten the first time I heard of bjds so I don't remember. Since they were expensive, like most people, I though "Screw that, I'll never have that much money! D: ' But then at A-KON I saw my first one in-person and fell in love immediately. ^____^ I remember he was sitting on a booth and I crouched in front of him in awe, staring, for about fifteen minutes until the owner got uncomfortable and asked me very politely if I was actually going to buy anything, because I was 'scaring her other customers'. (Which I was XD) I quickly got up and apologized, hurrying away after telling her that her doll was beautiful. (Which he was XD) Anyway... that got me back in.

    9. A friend of mine got a 1/6 Volks. I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I mean, I'd grown up with Barbies, but has never seen anything with the articulation of this doll before. So, I started looking into them... and that's when I discovered 1/4 & 1/3.

    10. The internet of course. One day I was looking through a bunch of cosplays, and I saw one of the pics of the coser and the doll together. Then I did some brief research and the doll was a BJD. I was really hooked and wanted one badly ever since. Another influence might be some of my friends. They are doll owners and they tells me all kinds of stuff..So there you go. I'm now finally saving for my first BJD ><

    11. I was looking through DA and was browsing through the photography section. I saw a photo and thought it was a real person, but when I went to full view, I was like, "OMG. That's a doll?! -in love-" XD

    12. I found melancholyKitties (a dolls clothing shop) in the links from kittycatblack (a jewelry shop). They had profiles for all their BJD's and they were SO beautiful and cool! After that I did a good deal of research on them. That was like three years ago tho lol. :D

    13. I originally saw someone's gallery of cosplay bjds, I didn't realize they were dolls at first but rather some very cutesey asian people... After I did a lil research and found out there is such thing as completely customizable series of dolls and well... Like a true fanatic I couldn't just leave the matter at a 'thinking' stage.

    14. I was browsing at a Pullips forum, when I came across a thread that talked about BJDs.
At first I was put off by the price and decided to try to get Pullips instead, but I fell in love with the more realism of BJDs and they are much more high quality than Pullips.

    15. Well, mostly japanese artists I guess. I saw so many books and drawing of them and just...fell in love

    16. My best friend, told me about them. They were so pretty! I started to watch people on DA and soon my best friend got two of her own and then came the need to own one myself. At ai-kon (anime con.) I saw a blank Ni Ni, Angel of Dream and fell in love with her. Now she's mine and named Sloan with my Edwin (Xiangyi from Doll Family)

    17. R727 and her boys on DeviantArt!!

    18. I was browsing Aimee's website (founder of DOA) for her beautiful artwork and then stumbled upon her section about the BJD. Ever since then I couldn't get them out of my mind. As an artist they presented an ever changing new outlet for my creativity.

    19. The thing that initially got me into BJDs was a webcomic called Acrylic Eyes by the multi-talented kiki-chan78. I was trolling the internet one night, found it, began reading it and was entranced. A few weeks after I started to follow the series, the authoress put up a few links to some BJD sites. I perused them (wow, random big word), freaked out over the prices for a bunch of "dolls", and then saw DZ's Yue. He was so pretty and awesome that I thought that maybe, just maybe--these dolls were worth the price. Now I'm just waiting for some money to fall into my lap to start up my collection. ^-^

    20. Seriously?! Danny Choo's pic kinda had the reverse effect for me... I had the impression that bjds were all suppose to resemble cute school girls with big anime eyes -shudder- THOSE EYES!! I'm not creeped out really, it's just that I found it irritating that they had to put such ugly cartoonish eyes into such a beautiful and realistic dolls, ugh

Ironically what got me into bjd were those figmas on Danny's site. I figured that a bjd was basically a bigger figma with better pose, mobility and customisation right? So I started doing research...

Those lovely Crobidoll boys & the really hot boys of various DA members such as Alientune, Maui-Art and R727 finally convinced me that i should get a bjd :) -sigh- now if only i had the money...
