What originally got you into BJDs?

Jan 19, 2010

    1. I've seen them around on DA, but it didn't much matter to me before. I thought they were extremely pretty but way too expensive to even bother with, but then a friend of mine came back from a trip with one, and I saw a few at Sakuracon and learned they are very distinctly unique and individual, and when I sat in on a panel about owning then I decided I needed to own one...

It wasn't until recently, *very* recently that I've been able to even think about it though... up until now I've just been lurking in the shadows lurking on DA pages and picking up as much information as I can ...

    2. I don't know how did I came across DoD website... I was never into dolls like barbies but always loved miniatures and creating characters, so I fell for BJDs. This happened four or five years ago, and since they were too expensive (I was at high school and couldn't afford a BJD) I just forced myself to forget them until when, a year ago, I saw pullips and the dolly-fever came back. I ended up collecting pullips since they are cheaper and cute, but couldn't resist to BJDs too long. I got my first one and now I'm selling my pullips. :P

    3. I've always liked dolls and figures, and a couple of years ago my boyfriend at the time showed me BJDs, thinking I would like them. he was right :)

    4. It was my best friend and fellow collector who got me into bjds. She had a beautiful dollzone nina and a soom Ai. After a few months of admiring and cuddling the pretty little girls, I looked up bjds, and with my friends help joined DoA and found the doll I wanted.

    5. I just loved dolls and one day I just found a dollmore doll <3

    6. I've seen them a lot on notebooks, bags and pins. And when I asked what these doll are, my friend explained that they are BJD. It was like 5 years ago and after that I happened to forget about dolls completely. But this year one of my friends bought two dolls and I got interested in them again. But even then I didn't want to buy, because they were too expensive and too useless.
And my real love for BJD began 3 months ago, when my best friend and I watched Angelic Layer. It's anime about dolls, and these anime dolls were very similar to BJD. And then my friend said that she would like to have one to dress it like Hikaru and to sew a lot of clothes (she likes sewing very much). So...I began to look for a doll that would suit my friend. And then....it was love :aheartbea I didn't know that these dolls are so beautiful and not so expensive as I thought at first.

    7. I met someone at an anime convention and I thought they were just so freaking cool. I was totally thinking "NO WAY ID EVER PAY THAT MUCH FOR A DOLL"... but then a month later, I'd paid for my first one.

I now have 3, and am making payments for my 4th haha.

    8. A couple years ago my friend's collage had a japan festival, and there was a booth about Japanese bjds. I instantly wanted one because they were so haunting and beautiful, but they were just too much money for an unemployed kid. This year I got a job and was able to buy my boy :) I don't think buy any more sd dolls, but I'm thinking about getting some dolls of smaller sizes.

    9. Years ago I began seeing resin dolls being carried around by attendees at anime conventions. I mentioned to a freind how beautiful/interesting I thought they were and she promptly responded with the price range they can run. Being about fourteen at the time I wrote BJD's off as an "unattainable pipe dream that I would only be able to admire from afar. Because surely they must be only for the rich and glamorous!" Years later, a close friend of mine took the plunge with her first resin doll (a Leekeworld Kyo), and got my other close friend into the hobby. They Introduced me to DOA months back saying "you don't have to own one to be part of the group, you just gotta share the love". They bought a vinyl doll for me as an early Christmas gift this year. I think finally owning my own resin doll is in the inevitable future.

    10. My friend told me about them so I looked them up. I like them so much because they reminded me of visual kei, which I love. I wasn't very into them until recently when I found the WangYe doll from HZ. I don't know why I love that doll so much, maybe because it's so red lol

    11. I got into it because a couple of friends of mine had BJDs and showed me what they were and explained to me what they were. When one of them showed me Fairyland I was sold, I knew I had to have one. Now I'm waiting on my second.

    12. Better to way "who" than "what" in my case... My girlfriend was already in the hobby, and had two dolls, when I met her. I wasn't creeped out (was and still am very hard to creep out), but I was... a little annoyed at their lack of human-like proportions (or so I thought at the time). I went out with her, though, and helped her take pictures of the, and surprisingly had a blast. :D

My girlfriend later confessed that her Obitsu Gretel was no longer appropriate for the character she was trying to shell, and wanted to get a different doll for her. But, as the Gretel was her first doll, she was extremely reluctant to have to sell her to someone she didn't know. So I offered to buy her from my girlfriend, so the Gretel would stay in the house with her, and she could see that she would be loved and cherished.

A few months later, I was paying a layaway for my first boy doll. O.o

    13. I want to say it was my second convention. I was sitting in line for a panel or something of that sort all I know is we were in like for a looong time. Well the girls sitting in front of us all had their VOLKS Super Dollfies. I thought they were the most beautiful dolls I had ever seen. I've always loved dolls but never enough to want to own them. But I knew it would be different when I saw them! It was 2004 when I first saw one but its taken me this long to commit to buying one. I suppose I wanted to be sure :)

    14. dA did me in as well XD I fell in love on there but the size just seemed too big for me. I'm more used to 1/12 sized stuff so I gave up for a few years, then this summer I ran into someone who had them on my model horse form, looked them up again and eventually got my first :)

    15. I was surfing Ebay and saw a Volks Dollfie dream in 1998. It only took me ten years to get a BJD... and now I don't want the Dollfie dream anymore.

    16. First time i saw BJD was on the random website about 6~7 years ago, there were pictures of BJD (but i didn't know they are called BJD), and I absolutely love them. Unfortunately, I couldn't find out what they are. few months later I completely forgot about the dolls. Then about 3~4 years ago, I saw "BJD" on a forum, out of curiosity, i clicked it in, and found out that was the doll I saw it on the random website! Thats how i started wanting to find out more about BJD and fell in love with them.

    17. I got into Blythe dolls first, I can't remember how, I think I just stumbled on them on the net. Many of my Blythe buds also collected BJD's. I though they were pretty, but not for me, they just seemed too big :)
Now 4 years later I'm selling most of my Blythes and the first tiny BJD's I bought to buy my second MSD....

    18. It was a few years ago at my home city's anime convention, I had seen a girl (who she and I are now friends) walking around with a doll in her hands. From the moment I laid eyes on him, I fell in love and wanted a doll of my own. The clothes, makeup, wigs, accessories, personalities/attitudes of the dolls, made my imagination flutter. I had to wait a few years before finally getting one xD and I am happy to say, I am loving every bit of the hobby.

    19. For me it's basically the same as XkytsuneX. I found them on DA too back in the beginning and I figured it was something beyond my reach. I was so insanely in love with their beauty that it hurt. So I dropped it. At the anime convention I saw them again and the love came back to me instantly. I discovered that there were more affordable dolls and I started saving up. Buying my first boy last year.

    20. Honestly, i found out about them when i saw pictures on 4chan. Then i learned what they were called and looked them up on DA, googled them, and researched until i got one :)
