1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What originally got you into BJDs?

Jan 19, 2010

    1. i started collecting pullips and it just went from there @w@

    2. Well I started collecting Living dead Dolls for a few years, then decided I wanted dolls that could pose more so moved onto Pullips. Collected and played with Pullips for a couple of years, then noticed some of my FB friends pictures of their BJD's. They looked so cute and really appealed to me, well except for their pricetag :p Anyways after I got over the prices I decided to take the plunge last year and I'm really loving this hobby ^_^ (can't wait for my little resin family to grow <3)

    3. I wasn't into dolls and I was never a doll person when I was young.
However, I started looking into dolls when I saw the photo of a fan-doll on line. This was back in 2001 or 2002. It was most likely a 1/3 or a 1/4, with a face-up and a dress to look like the guitarist of Malice Mizer. Considering that the guitarist would sometimes dress to imitate a doll, I found the idea very fascinating. That was the spark that led me to look up BJDs. I still don't know which company or which sculpt the doll in the photo was, but it didn't matter so much anymore. All I know is that was the turning point for me.

    4. I started collecting playdolls when I had my daughters, then I discovered a lot of dolls and fell for Ellowyne Wilde.
Then one day, I was disappointed in her pose-ability, she couldn't hold a flute like I wanted her to, and I started lurking on BJDs. That was the beginning of the end !!!:doh;)

    5. Oh my. I was busy sculpting my own little dolls, faes and babies and a few strange little creations. I took every class and read everything I could about sculpting. One day I was invited to take a class on sculpting bjd's. I had never even seen one at that point so I didn't really understand what I was getting into, but I thought it couldn't hurt to learn something more about my art. Hind-site is truly 20/20. I wish I had known about these amazing creations years ago. I am still sculpting tiny little bjd's myself and have just ordered my very first doll from DZ. Little Ivy will be coming to live with me and increase my excitement over the mechanics of these delicate little creatures. I wish I knew who the artist was, but have not been able to find out as of yet. Anyway, to make a long story short, I'm hooked. Already planning my next purchase. Think I might have to have Lou by dear sweet Nefer Kane. I love BJD's!

    6. I actually saw them first from that independent artist whose dolls sell on ebay for like 60k? I can't remember her name atm. Anyways, I fell in love with those dolls but didn't realize they were a whole genre. I went to look at them again recently and somehow ran into a post about bjd's and that's when I realized there was an entire world of these dolls and I've been obsessing since.

    7. I found some blogs, then got interested. And I liked the idea of customisation - that you can create your very own character. First I get MSD doll for SD were too expensive at the moment, then I got an SD. I like the freedom you get with a doll.

    8. Well, when I was 14 or so I saw some pictures in a magazine. And I was like whaaaat is that???? :D but I didn´t looked it up on the internet because I thought you would only get them from Japan. So I dropped it. But just a year ago I looked up some pics of anime and manga and found those lovely dolls again. THis time I searched on the internet about those dolls and the BJD fever got me.

    9. I just remember browsing deviantART and something popping up on a group I was currently watching and was instantly interested in them c:

    10. I knew the BJD with a friend who herself had known through a friend too. I put a long time before my first bjd

    11. I am a huge fan of a game series called The iDOLM@STER (and although now they have official dolls that's not what got me into them). On the iDOLM@STER forum I went on, someone had a blog for their Dollfie Dreams in their signature. At first I thought they were really creepy until I started looking at them on Danny Choo's personal blog where he had lots of pictures from Dollpa. I suddenly realized how cool they were and started doing more and more research! I just knew I had to have one of these!

    12. I used to see photos of BJD's on Deviant Art and always admired the photos but didn't know that much about BJD's. You see i have an interest in 3D animation and whilst creating "life like" animation is really hard. I really enjoyed just posing characters in a scene and creating an image.

i also have an interest in photography (i'm just starting out) but i live in area which is rather dull outdoors. There is nothing of interest close by and I wanted to combine my knowledge of posing/animation with something i could photograph indoors come rain or shine. So a week ago I ordered my first BJD (a secondhand Only-Doll YouNan) and he came this week. So here i am :D

PS it was either photographing flowers in vases (which soon adds up $$$) or investing in a BJD....

    13. I was looking for books on Amazon about doll making and I came across a book all about BJDs. I saw some Peaks Wood dolls and found reference to DoA and looked on Flickr. I was sold.

    14. I always wanted to have a doll who looks like real people, but I think they didn't exist. Some years ago I notice bjd so... my life changed xD And that's the reason why I have my first male boy :)

    15. I liked Barbies when I was little and always had this collecting dolls hobbie, so it was no wonder when I switched from Barbies to bjds. First time I get to know about bjd was my friend, who showed me a MSD boy. Seeing and holding such kid of dolls is totally different, so after I held the bjd in my hands, I knew I had to get my own.

    16. lolol. interesting question!!
At first I wanted to find a manequinn for drawing references, but I find wooden version to be extremely... blocky.
And then while i was finding some pose reference, comes this oasis doll body review!! Boy I was really impressed or what. I got really excited, and I lied to myself tht i would make them a good reference for drawing. yep, just a lie.
I bought them and fell in love with them completely, they're never used for drawing references, more like a "subject" themselves to be drawn.

    17. I got interested on BJD recently, but I never really could afford them so I kept on stalking until I could earn enough money XD
Got my first boy in March 2014 from Ringdoll >u<

Since I'm also an illustrator, I tend to use my boy as a drawing reference too XD

    18. I saw a doll at convention and was going to ask what kind of doll it was but the girl was very standoffish so I did not. Fast forward 2 years and i still have not forgotten the doll. I come across Pullip dolls on my youtube suggestions and started from there and then i found pictures of bjds when i was on pinterest looking at Pullip dolls. Did some research and have begun my resin obsession.

    19. I originally stumbled across this hobby while looking at some pictures of Jeffree Star on Google in 2010 I believe, when I was 14 years old. Somehow one thing lead to another, and suddenly I was on Flickr looking at pictures of androgynous ball-jointed dolls. I was instantly hooked, and have spent the last 4 years pining over these hunks of resin. Hopefully this year I will finally get my first doll!

    20. Going to anime conventions with bakayaro onna. She always brought her dolls, and I fell in love with every single one. I've waited a long time for this. :)
