Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. What originally got you into BJDs?

Jan 19, 2010

    1. I'm pretty sure I followed someone on DA who had bjds, and they looked pretty/interesting so I googled it. At the time I was like 15 so I didn't really have the money for them, so I lost interest in them. Now I have a job and found a doll that I love, so I'm more into the hobby.

    2. I love this idea.

    3. I love CLAMP.

    4. I vaguely knew about BJDs for a while, but categorized them with anime figurines--something overly expensive and vaguely creepy and definitely not for me. But while faffing about on Pinterest about two years back, I saw a few BJD pictures, and I was impressed with the level of detail and craftsmanship. Not enough to really want one...until I saw a pin of Ringdolls Qinzhe and Meng He. I just fell in love with their aesthetic, their gorgeous faces, their lovely outfits, their poses.... Before I knew it, I kept looking for pictures of those two, and started saving them on my computer, and then I finally had to admit I was more than a little addicted.

So basically I fell in love with two specific dolls and now I'm knee-deep in the hobby, and the proud owner of Qinzhe. I hope to get Meng He soon, and now I'm hunting for dolls to be my OCs. BJDs are so great, I can't get enough of them!

    5. I'm really into character design and 3D modeling (it's what I want to do as a career) all of which is done on the computer. I really like BJD's because I feel like it's very similar except it's much more hands on. My first time seeing a BJD was from watching a faceup video on youtube and I thought it was absolutely amazing.

    6. My interest in BJDs started about 5 years ago. That's also when my overall interest in dolls started. I was back in high school then so I didn't have too much money. I knew that there was no way that my parents would let me buy a BJD. I still really wanted a doll so I stetled on buying a Pullip. I eventually got another one but I never really bonded with them as much as I had originally hoped to. Throughout this time I still had a strong interest in BJDs. Now that I've matured I feel like I'm finally ready for a BJD. I'm looking forward to finally getting involved in this hobby!

    7. I was into my little ponies (I still love g1 and g2 but not so much anymore) but what I really loved about them was customization. I slowly started to movie into human dolls, monster high. Then I discovered pullips and passed them off as too expensive (at the time I didn't have a job, anything I wanted I had to go through my parents) and then in a hop skip and a hump (and a job...) I ordered my first bjd. However I did attempt sculpting them first, and that was a bit of a disaster. I've since improved drastically

    8. I found bjds thanks to YouTube. I found a minifee miyu box opening and after watching it went on to watch more, and researched into what these dolls were and just fell in love with them from there

    9. I have a few friends that have bjds and I admired them, especially the Mei sculpts. Over the years I've gotten to want a Mei more and more myself. So now the plan for this year is to finally get my first doll.

    10. I've skimmed this thread so far and a lot of people say they first saw BJDs on DA - me too! I was fascinated by the dolls @AreeElf posted, and I even made fanart of her doll Aredhel back in 2007. After years of sporadic googling, getting a pullip, and waiting until I had the money I got my first bjd 4 years later in 2011, and two more this year ^^ I did also watch Angelic layer in about 2009. It wasn't what made me get a doll per se but it did help!

    11. I saw a picture online. The picture was a supia doll. It was supia roda. I instantly fell inlove but i can't afford her yet. She is my ultimate dream doll. Then I saw an Iplehouse Carina and Victor and then i really want an SD but right now Im very into MSDs. I feel like they are the right size for me. Maybe soon I'll get to have the SDs that I really love

    12. Discovering Obitsu and Volks' dolls got me interested at first...which led to learning about BJDS in general. I'd never heard of BJDS before. I thought they looked really cool but it was too expensive for me to get into as I was a poor college student at the time ;_; (also I was kind of overwhelmed by diffrent facets of the hobby in general and was too busy with school).

I've finally gotten into the hobby years later though so yayyy - happy ending!

    13. I had a similar experience here, and recently I saw my friend's bjd on their instagram feed, and I started looking up prices, and yeah, I ordered my first doll yesterday O.O

    14. I was going to allot of anime cons from 2009 to 2011 so I saw people walking around with them. At first I was a bit creeped out by them but after a bit I became curious. So the summer of 2011 I attended my first BJD Panel at Anime Iowa and learned a whole bunch about them, plus earned a invite here.

    15. I owe it to rannsama on dA.

She used to post pics of her dolls and that's how I found out about bjds **-**. Beautiful dolls like art..

    16. I saw pictures of volks super dollfie on an anime magazine and I amazed with it in an instant. It was about 12 years ago while I was at 9th or 10th grade. It was a long time ago before I had my first doll early this year.

    17. I was into Japanese fashion dolls, specifically Takara Jenny, and I was browsing for them online. I think I ended up coming across suggested items on eBay that were doll wigs, and they were modeled on the weirdest and most detailed dolls I'd ever seen xD it took me a while to figure out what they were. The first company I found was Volks, and the price immediately sent me running (I think I was about 14?) I did mention the MSDs to my mom in passing since ~$400 sounded at least more realistic to me than the ~$700 SDs. She and I both laughed it off at that point. I didn't know anything about them and kind of thought they were just like, crazy expensive Barbies. So I didn't see WHY the prices were so high.
Within the next couple years I got more into the doll scene and got my first few Azone dolls. When I joined communities like Instagram and stuff and looked at Azone collectors' accounts, so many of them collected BJDs too that I couldn't ignore it. In 2015 I had a big yard sale and ended up with $300, and I realized I actually could afford one of those crazy dolls xD So I looked around, enough to get an idea but probably not as much as I should have (lol) and settled on a Bluefairy mini girl ^w^
At the time I didn't know about single vs. double joints, etc., but within maybe half a year I had gotten another doll and felt comfortable selling her single-jointed body so I could replace it. But, I still love her sculpt a lot! So I have her head hanging around until I get around to buying a Tiny Fairy Neo body.
Now I'm up to, what... 5 full dolls and 2 heads??? xD the addiction grows fast. And now I've gotten my mom into it! She has one doll and one on layaway >w< I love it

    18. I was at an convention around a year ago, and one of the vendors had a pullip out (I know it's an off topic doll), BUT I fell in love with it, and that lead me and my friend to look for it, which lead us to many bjd sites since we were looking at owner collections in the porcess. Seeing so many pretty different types and sculpts of dolls lead me here haha.

    19. Well that was a long time ago, i was a young girl and i loved having unique dolls, styling them and making them different than an average barbie doll or MH doll. I destroyed many of Barbies, Bratz, MH dolls x3 They just werent for me i guess. As i was looking through vidoes of unboxing i came across BJD ones and i fell in love. I was 8 or 9 at the time. I was a kid. I wrote that Christmas i remember , a letter to ''Santa'' along with a picture of a DollZone doll. Ofcourse it never came...and i was sad but i didnt mind at the time. I totally forgot about it since i got hurt and thought that i would never have one like them. Then years passed and i finally ordered my first BJD :love

    20. oh man lets see. I got into BJDs around 2007? I saw some pictures floating around dA and well it took off from there I think. I got out of the hobby for a few years and started back up maybe two years ago. This time tumblr brought me back into the hobby haha
