What was the highest price you ever paid for a doll?

Jul 18, 2019

    1. $2500 for a rare full-set that I absolutely, seriously OMGWANT and might not have the chance to get any other way?
Okay... sure. Painful on the purse and I'd have to think long and hard about it, but sometimes that's what it takes to get what you want in a collectibles-type hobby. True Love doesn't always come cheap.

      $2500 for just a head?
Nope. Not a chance. Not happening. I don't care what it is, how much I like it, or how rare it happens to be. That's too much for one piece of a toy, that you'd *still* have to pay more to complete.

    2. Great question.
I paid $1900 for Thesis my Dollmore Trinity Elysia.
I paid $1200 for Adagio the Dollmore Model Doll - Black berry ; Tattoo Hayarn but she was 1 of 1 so, meh, worth it.
I would GLADLY pay $3000+ for a Dollmore Trinity Doll - Soft Light Restful Kate (hint, hint)

    3. I paid $1000 for a fullset RD Jack the Ripper in 2014 here on DoA. Actually I bought it via a mediator as I had no access to the marketplace back in the day and I clearly had no idea of how to use the site. That was a huge mistake, I will definitely not do that anymore. But I was just a kid back in the day, I'm pretty much surprised my mother let me do that at all. The worst part of it was the fact the re-released him like 6 months after I done that... It was a big jerk move from Ringdoll because I asked them many times if they were going to and they always said no. I wish I was patient enough just to wait for the re-release to happen.
He's the best, but I lack some of the fullset stuff and that's a bummer. The economical situation in Russia sucks so any doll purchases really do hit my pockets. And I'm not paying a grand or more for a doll for sure.

    4. The most I have ever paid for a doll is $436, a preordered Simply Meant to Be Dohwee full doll in ruddy real skin. He's a very important doll to me. However, he will not be the most expensive doll in our house. My girlfriend paid $525 for her Soom Morga head in white, no body.

As for my grails... One of my grails is a Dust of Dolls Appi Lunn in Chocolat. It's a pretty rare doll, only a few were made and only a handful have been sold secondhand here on doa. If I had the chance to buy her, without risking any kind of money issues, I'd be willing to pay quite a bit more than what my girlfriend paid for her Soom Morga.

    5. $2,690.99 for my Trinity Kate.

Also my Dr. Strange. I can't remember how much I paid for him and IoS has the price set to "ask first", so I can't say for sure which of them cost more.

    6. I probably wouldn't pay over 1500 for any single doll, even if it was a special fullset. In fact I would pay that rather for a rare nude doll than a fullset where the blank doll itself is worth less, as I'm not really a fullset collector at all. I'm a decent seamstress and have some crafting enthusiasm myself, and usually company fullsets look pretty off from my regular crew style (and also don't fit any of my OC stories).

I am actively trying to forget what I paid for my most expensive dolls, but I think two or three have reached the one grand club. I bought one and a half 5th motif boys for a bit more than what they cost when they were new (I had bought a head in the last sales period and got 1 full doll and a body later), and the third doll was a RR Epsilon that cost about 1100 plus shipping as a new doll. But I don't feel bad about these purchases as I know that someone'll take all of them off my hands for that same amount or more if I have to sell them (what I do not want, ever!).

In lesser sums, I have paid more than is reasonable sometimes, but that was just because I wanted the doll very much. When I am looking for a doll that is discontinued and rare, I can pay several hundreds more than what they originally sold for, even though they aren't really worth that much and would never sell for that if I sold them. I have one doll that I have been hunting for forever. Nothing special about her and she is not particularly wanted, she was just a very small release. I would not go over the one grand mark as she was about 600 originally, but I'd definitely make a bad deal... bad for myself.

As for the situation of the original poster, although that probably expired a long time ago... No, I wouldn't pay even over 500 for any head, I believe. If there is a certain style of head that I want but cannot find cheaper, I will start believing in my own sculptor abilities before I start believing in me spending so much on a head. I have been lucky to get my grails when they were originally released, or then I have a cheap taste, but nevertheless I haven't luckily ever faced a situation like that for real.

    7. For me is Black Jack from Volks, I paid 1315 dollar for him, he worth it!!

    8. The most I've paid was $2,800-ish for a blank Midnoir doll with extra hands and feet. For me, it was worth it and I'm glad I bought her. If the doll perfectly fits a character for me I will spend a lot on it without hesitation. If you're financially stable enough to afford it and you know it is something that you truly want, why not?

    9. My Dollmore Lusion Daish was $1785 in 2012. The next most expensive is an off-topic bjd for $1600 in 2019.

    10. Around 850 for Ringdoll Le Leo in fullset, that being said I can see myself spending up to a thousand for a fullset doll. Maybe 1200 as a limit lol

    11. My first doll was $1000 including face up, extra parts, clothes, eyes, and wigs. No regrets though because she's everything I wanted and still is. However, I'd easily drop $2000 for a full set centaur pegasus from Fairyland if I REALLY liked her.

    12. Sheesh, everyone in here has spent like $800-$2,000+ and I'm over here with my $500-$600 max rule - which would maaaaybe go up to $700-ish if it was a company I really liked and trusted* and/or I could get a good layaway for it. :XD:

      *(Probably just Volks/Luts/Iplehouse atm)

My most expensive right now is either my Volks little Alice fullset (my only fullset doll) or my old Iplehouse Lion. I might get a Volks fullchoice SD13 or SD16 girl in the future, or a custom Dollfie Dream from Doll Point (once I can actually vacation again) - those would definitely break my current limit, but I would consider them worth it.

I would not spend more than $2-300 for a head; there are so many doll sculpts out there now, I feel like I could find a cheaper option that would work just as well.

    13. $2000 for a head and body.

I’d never in a million years pay that for just the head, no matter how rare. Maybe if I earned a lot more money but I have to save months or years for dolls that price, to wait another dang year to finish it? No sir.

    14. $1400 for a rare artist head. On a long layaway. With free shipping. I had tried and failed multiple times to buy it at better prices, and was always beaten by someone else. On one hand, it was/is my holy grail. On the other, I can't see myself ever paying that price for a single doll part again.

Runners up would be my Dust of Dolls Doom Bomi, Twigling Elbe, Volks Irvin, Unidoll Ark, and 5th Motiv Venitu. (In that order) All of which are more expensive, full dolls. Layaway will get you far if you have the budgeting skills and patience. My average job has paid $9.25 an hour.

I don't think you need to spend $$$ for a good doll, personally. It's about taste and what you get out of it. I spent the least money on the best-posing BJD I've ever owned; a whopping $75. Doll Leaves and Angelsdoll still have some of the better engineering I've handled. Resinsoul SDs pose better than Soom SDs and come in more colours, though both require the same sueding and wiring. Virtually any sculpt can look promotion-worthy- just needs the right faceup.

    15. 420$.This is a doll that I spend the most, because I am not a rich person. After you buy a doll, you need to buy all kinds of clothes for him, you need to make up for him, and you need to spend money to maintain him. These prices add up to much higher than the price you bought him. If I spend too much money on buying a doll, I will not be able to pay for the maintenance of the doll. So I won't buy such an expensive doll again unless I resell this doll.

    16. The most I have spent was $420 (for a full doll)... and I think $500 would be the max I would pay for a full doll.
$2500 is way too much just for a head, it's just crazy for me, I wouldn't pay that amount even if I had it xD

    17. The most I’ve spent for a doll was $565 on my Fullset Angell-Studio Virgo. I ordered her alongside another doll (my Fullset Angell-Studio Minotaur) so I was given a discount by Fabric Friends, which was nice! I put them on layaway, but that whole order was 800 something dollars.

    18. Currently, just over $1k for a Minifee Maya Designers Complete (Valkyrie). Never thought I'd spend this much on a doll before, woof.

    19. Roughly 1200-1300 USD for my grail doll. I bought his head and body separate, and for the head alone I paid around 450... Would I ever do that again? Proooobably not lol

      No regrets, though.

    20. I just spent $872.34 on my dream doll. This is the most I’ve ever been willing to spend. She is a Volks DDP Yayoi Takatsuki which was released back in 2016. I found one on Mandarake that was never opened and in excellent condition. She is everything I’ve ever wanted in a vinyl anime doll. No regrets!
