1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

When do you prefer to think of a character?

    1. Wellll...the goal for my first doll was to make him my most-loved OC ^ ^; However, we didn't bond due to the fact that my OC is in my heart and mind, but I never considered my Camine to actually be him. He's getting a total revamp as a character I made specifically for my Camine. :) I know a little bit about him already, but it'll be a "learn as we go" process ^__~ I'm excited!

It's fun to hunt for molds that look like your character, but I think it's way more fun to find out who the doll you're holding might be!

    2. I usually think of a dolls characters after I get them. Normally I can't even decide on a name until I've got it in my hands! They can seem so different once you see one in person, I usually sit on it for a few days after that and then decide who my doll is meant to be.:)

    3. I decide on Oracle after I saw a woman cosplaying as her

    4. I would prefer to wait until I actually have the doll before me in real life. Unfortunately, I seem to be sort of working up personalities for at least the main two I want regardless of other intentions. I just... don't want to get it wrong. But I can't resist sort of thinking about it-- especially when I spend so much time discussing such things with my other doll friends.

    5. I'm somewhere in the middle. I'd like to have an idea of what the doll would be like before I commit to buying. I definitely wouldn't buy a doll that doesn't already give off a certain "vibe" and suggests itself for a certain type of character.

However, I've found that it's better to leave some minor details for when the doll actually arrives. So far, this has been my experience with all the dolls I've collects, and I think it'll be the same for BJDs.

    6. I go in this order:

      Fall for a mold
      Make a character
Get the doll and hope it works.

So far it's only failed me once!

    7. Hehe, it's always going to be before for me. During the 'saving' process, I think I'd be making the character and further developing it when the doll arrives. c:

    8. I enjoy making character types for my dolls, so, I like to have a loose character in place before going ahead and getting the doll. I like to know they'd have a good chance of fitting in, and be what I want them to be. It doesn't have to be totally rigid, though ;) I enjoy "discovering" what each doll is like! :)

    9. For my first doll, I tried to not create the character before he had arrived, but I couldn't hold my self. He pretty much finished when he arrived.

For my second (who is an event head I got with my first boy) I didn't eve know I wwould get her, so no pre-made character there.

For my incoming third doll I have a complete character for her :) And most of my future dolls will have a full character before I even order them ^^ In that way I know I will bond with them and that they will fit well in with the others :)

    10. I have never found a doll that matches any of the characters in my head, although Unidoll Ark and Jace have come close (but not quite).

    11. I usually spot a sculpt I like, then I work on a character from then on. Hopefully, when the doll arrives they fit it. If not, I do some adjustments. :)

    12. BEFORE!

When I say before I actually mean before you recieve it.
If you make the story after the story might not 'feel right'. Y'know? Then you might not want the doll anymore.
If you make the story after you order your doll it might help while you wait for the arrival, it'll keep your mind busy.

    13. I didn't even WANT a doll until I saw one that looked just like Jared in my head! I still don't have Jared, but I willlll! I really hope the doll I have chosen to "play" him suits, or else I will probably resell rather quickly.

    14. I prefer before if only because then I can use it as a justification for the doll ^_^;

    15. I'm all character first. Of course, I haven't actually *got* Vince yet, but he's so terribly real to me that I sometimes lapse into talking about him as though he's here already. Sometimes I see a sculpt I really like, but unless they speak to an existing character, I can't imagine buying them.

      =^__^=

    16. I'm technically a bit of both, although I lean more towards after, rather than before. It seems to me, that I tend to have minor ideas about them based on their appearance from store pictures, but it inevitably changes as I spend more time with them... Even when I have ideas, living with them and noticing their perks and quirks, things then to flesh out a lot more than what I could come up with.

If it helps any though, almost every character I've ever come up wih has always evolved with time, rather than have been fleshed out during the "conceptional" period. It might seem a bit weird to some, but that's apparently how my mind works. Alternative explainations could be that all my characters take parts of me into their character(as is natural, they do come from my imagination after all), and as I change, parts of them change a little as well. That's not to say they all just mimic me, but while certain characteristics may change a bit over time, they always retain their defining personas...

    17. I'm not one who needs a "character" for my dolls, ever, unless they decide to have one. There are some who are most definitely, no questions asked, story characters, but some are just... there because I like them :)

    18. Sometimes I buy a doll to be a specific character, though there's usually some disconnect after she arrives. In general I try to not create a character for a doll whose sculpt surprises me into an unplanned doll purchase, but while I'm excitedly awaiting its arrival, I almost always end up surprising myself with a character plan.

    19. Same here!

This is how it works for me:
      1. Fall in love with the mold first
      2. Buy it
      3. If a character for it evolves from my mind, then the doll will have a character. If not, the doll will be characterless (but I still give them all a name).

I'm not sure how many people are like me, but I buy dolls solely because I love the look of the mold haha. XD For me, the doll having a character is only an 'extra' sort of thing that may or may not happen.

    20. I haven't got my first BJD yet, I'm still waiting for him to arrive
I've got a slight idea about his character and there are a few names I consider to give him but I'm not sure yet
I guess I've gotta wait until I can hold him in my hands to make up his character. That is, me and my boyfriend are gonna make up his character together. He's looking forward to it xD
