1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

When you buy a doll, does anyone else have a say in what mold/company you buy?

May 7, 2011

    1. For me, not another soul has a say in which doll I buy, since I am the only one who will be paying for them. However, I'll accept suggestions from close friends or family. :)

    2. I've just ordered my first bjd - have been selling off lots of my other doll collection to fund it as my husband and I have agreed that our collections need to pay for themselves with limited extra funds going in (so he doesn't get a say there). At first I knew I wanted a tiny. Then I narrowed it down to a Littlefee - love the posing ability! (Self-supporting handstand!! One armed plank!! Amazing!) I looked at many many other tinies, and if one of them had just the right face, that would have been fine. But none of them matched - IP BID Coco was close, but... no.

So then I had to choose the face sculpt.... oh my goodness. 38+ to choose from!! I narrowed it down to about 6, and then had to ask for help choosing! My husband didn't like Reni, the front runner, because it lacked a few extra smiling lines around the eyes - so it did drop a bit down the list. Then I decided on Rachel. Then I started second guessing myself. So I figured, since this doll is to represent Miss A, my eldest daughter (she's 6), she might like being involved in choosing. I didn't tell her that I thought I should get Rachel. But after looking at them all, she chose Rachel too! Why? Because "she's got an A in her name, just like me!"

I did point out that the Sarang sculpt had 2 As, therefore, according to her reasoning, Sarang should be twice as good as Rachel. But "NO Mummy!! I've chosen RACHEL!!" :D So Rachel it was! It might have been very interesting if she'd chosen differently from me LOL.

    3. I agree with the majority here. My money, my doll, my choice. But if I was stuck for any reason (like is this a good time money-wise or I love two dolls and can't decide) I would talk to my Grandmother. She has been super supportive of my new hobby from day one. I just ordered my first doll, a minifee and she is really happy for me (even though she likes Chloe better than Celine who I ordered.) :) I would also definitely not ask my friends (as they don't care).

    4. lucky my dolls are my choice. my partner dosen't like dolls and dosent understand the expence of them and how I could justify spending £300+ on a doll. The only influence he has is enforcing the rule that if the money comes from somthing to do with dolls(such as selling clothes and doing customs) it can be spent on dolls. however if its money from my wages it has to be anything not spent on other "important and needed" things during the month. if there is money in my bank the day before payday it can go to dolls. if not it cant.

    5. I like to ask opinions on things, but i don't answer to anyone where my doll buying is concerned. The only time I've really had to get approval, in a sense, is when I was buying a doll for someone else. I wanted to be sure what I thought they'd like matched with what they really do like. Lol

    6. I'll ask opinions from my brother when it comes to making a choice--if I'm hung up between two sculpts, or have to make a quick choice because of time constraints if they're limited, but the choice is ultimately mine. (He asks my opinion in the same regard as well, though, so it is a fair trade-off.)

I was pressured once to get a doll I wasn't completely in love with, and that's one of the few whole dolls I have sent to a new home with no regrets. In fact, it's the only whole doll I have re-homed. Lesson learned, and now I certainly do not allow other people's opinions to sway me away from a doll I love or toward a doll I don't like.

    7. I choose what I would like :)

    8. i show my mom and sisters my wishing doll and though they say something like she's too gloomy etc i don't care. it's just so different case compare to you, that i pay full cost for my dolls so they might have no rights to say what i should buy. actually, they don't much care about my hobbies.

    9. I like to ask for friend's opinions on sculpts, but at the end of the day I go for what I want.

    10. I pick out my own ball-jointed dolls and sculpts since I have to pay every last penny they cost. If I have trouble choosing between two or more sculpts I usually ask my partner to take a look and objectively tell me what he thinks. This doesn't always work out for the best though because I then tend to choose the sculpt he likes most only to figure out after arrival of the doll that I actually liked the other one better. I also get the usual 'not another doll' preech before he actually comments on the dolls.

But that's alright, it helps me learn more about my own preferences in the hobby.

    11. I have a few close friends that know my tastes so well that sometimes I wonder if they know me better than I know myself. Whenever I'm browsing dolls and am having trouble deciding which I like better I ask for their opinions. More often than not they'll notice something I didn't that would greatly please/irritate me. Only I decide what to pay for, but having a 2nd pair of eyes or so really helps.

    12. Nope nobody influences my choices in what dolls I buy because I buy them with my own money, I don't think I like the idea of co-owning a doll my parents aren't into dolls but say my Mum was and I wanted to move out what would happen to the dolls I co-own with my Mum. Would I have one collection at my parents and one to wherever I move to?

    13. Hubby gets some say, because dolls bother him a lot, so it helps if he gets to say if one scares the heck out of him.

    14. LOL they WISHED they had a say. I think everyone in my family would be a lot happier if I just got the dolls THEY like. Girly SDs with big heads, large eyes, curly hair and wearing lacy lolita outfits. Fortunately....no one influences me when I choose my dolls because they are based on characters that live in my head. So only I know best.

    15. I share my doll projects with my little sister and ask for her opinion, but she usually dislikes the sculpts I go for. I once showed my mom the doll I was planning to buy from the Dollstown website and all she noticed was the price (and started to tell me how ludicrous it would be to buy such a doll, etc. etc). All in all, it's nice to have feedback from my family but they would probably never influence my choice of dolls.

    16. The only time someone else might get a say is if they wanted a doll from X company and I was also thinking of getting a doll from X company but hadn't 100% committed yet. This way it saves on shipping. :)

      Otherwise, my dolls, my choice.

    17. Almost never I'm very picky about the company's I like and the way I like my dolls to look
My husband sometimes has a little bit of a say so but for the most part I buy what I like/want

    18. Quite a few times I would ask my friends which skin tone I should get because I am very indecisive however, I usually am the one choosing the mold myself. On the otherhand, owner pictures sway my heart a lot..

    19. It's not like I am asking people directly 'Hey, what mold should I get' or 'Hey, do you like this and that mold, I wanna get it'. But I get influenced by owner pictures quite easily so indirectly the owners of a mold I am interested in have a say in what doll I buy or don't buy. If I find a massiv amount of owner pictures in which the mold doesn't give me a nice feeling of looking at I re-consider and eventually don't buy.

    20. Nope.. My money, my dolls... ;)
