Which do you prefer plastic, acyrlic, silicone or glass eyes?

Sep 1, 2005

    1. Urethane all the way. Glass can be a close runner-up depending on the company (I really like Ginarolo's Special eyes). And then I really like silicone for certain things; some of my dolls have SOOM eyes because the kind of effect that they give--being able to catch and pool the light like glass but retaining the detail of acrylic--really can't be achieved by anything else.

Some acrylic eyes can be really nice, but they just don't have the depth or the life of urethane or glass. I don't think I could put another one of my dolls in acrylics, even super detailed and nice ones like Souldoll. They just look... dollish.

    2. Urethane, hands down -- I love the depth and richness of the color, and they're not as expensive as the higher-end glass eyes. Not to mention, in my experience they're actually better than glass when it comes to reflecting light. I do like some of the cool effects that can be achieved with custom acrylics, though -- there are some things that are just impossible to achieve with urethane or glass. :sweat

    3. I always want to have Urethane ....
but the best I can find is silicone T_T
      (limited budget)

    4. I've had all different kinds of eyes and have found that Gumdrops photograph better than any other kind! My dolls don't leave home without them! LOL!!!

    5. I prefer glass eyes, however, the acyrlic dark tone is still ok.

    6. I feel silly admitting this, but I tend to have mainly acrylic eyes. I enjoy their lightweight, pretty colors and vibrant hues that sometimes glass eyes don't have.
Contrastingly, I like the weight of glass eyes. :D

    7. I've had experience with glass and acrylic eyes only. My SDF Blanchet came with grey acrylics and I had them in for a long time. When I changed them to glass I was startled by how more realistic she looked and how much more depth her eyes had - it was a major chance to her overall appearance!
I've been hearing that glass isn't the same quality it used to be, especially with Zouks, and my own glass eyes from Volks came with some imperfections as well. I also find that it's hard to bring out the color in them in photos, but that may just be my technique.
I've been taking a look at urethane eyes and I've been fairly impressed! They always seem to look fantastic in photos and capture so much light and color. I'm pretty sure the next pair of eyes I'll be getting will be urethane as opposed to glass.

    8. Half of my boys have glass, and the other half have urethane. ^^; I can't stand acrylics, and I've used silicone in the past but won't go back to them. Lately I buy more high quality glass eyes than anything else, as I usually just get them from Yahoo!Japan auctions. I am considering changing one of my boys' pairs of urethanes to glass though, because they don't seem to have the depth, texture, and reflective quality of my other urethanes. (They're Enchanted Doll eyes and most of my other urethane-wearing boys have Gumdrops.)

    9. I love glass eyes but I have also used silicone eyes and like those too. I haven't tried the urethane eyes so I think I need to check those out. Acrylics are my least favorites.

    10. All of my crew used to have acrylic, but now most of them have glass.

      Mikel - sillicone
      Weros - acrylic
      Kasada - 1 acrylic, 1 sculpey
      Gaia - glass
      Gael - glass
      Jonas - glass
      Asalahan - Zouks glass
      Mariisa - Zouks glass
      Noorstom - Zouks glass

I've never had urethane eyes, but they do look nice in person. I'm just not willing to spend a ton of money on them at this time.

    11. I prefer to usually stick with acrylics or glass.

    12. I HATE flat acryilics....though its all I have right now, Dollmore acryiclics are reasonable enough for now they have some shine and some depth but not like glass, I adore glass and eye candies and I would have them for all my kids except them being expensive.

    13. I was suprised to see some flat glass eyes looked really nice . I guess it depends on the maker but yes I am holding out for some urethane...

    14. I have all 4 right now, and I love them all.
My leeke honey has acrylic eyes, but they are so well made and detailed that they may as well be glass or something. they are amazingly deep and clear :)
My (sister's) leeke sweet has silicone (soom) eyes right now, and every time I see them they amaze me by how lifelike they are.
My El has glass right now. I bought him some custom gumdrops but he doesn't wear them. They are probably the MOST amazing eyes I have EVER seen in a doll..but his solid dark glass ones suit him more, so those will possibly go up for sale soon..
My bambicrony boy has gray glass eyes..and they make him look so sad and alive :)
My minimee has volks metallic acrylics, and while they are VERY flat (no threading or anything) the way the metallic color reflects the light takes care of that problem.

If I had to pick just one type of eye to go with, I'd choose the gumdrops. (except for Toshi..his super dark glass ones are too perfect for him..but wouldn't work at all in the others)

    15. Okay, I have to revoke my last post (seven pages ago XD). I loooove glass eyes. I'll still buy acrylics any day because of the price, but if I can find affordable glass ones, I'm snatching them up in a second. Quincy was wearing gold acrylic eyes for about a month while we waited for his glass ones in the exact same color - and now that they're here, he looks SOOOO much better.

    16. I think the coolest pair of eyes that I own are a pair of DIY (do it yourself) eyes that I bought off of ebay. (These are basically white eye blanks with clear domes that you can insert colored discs into to make any color/effect eyes that you want.) I scored some radiating lines onto some tinfoil, cut it into circles and inserted them under the domes. Bam. Instant metallics! I want to experiment with colored foil and other kinds of materials as well. (I wish I had a camera that could take decent closeups so I could show the full effect of the eyes...)

    17. Well, I only have one pair of default acrylic eyes so far, but seeing pictures around the internet made me think glass eyes were heaps better... don't know any specific brands, though.

    18. Acrylics and Glass eyes are the best for me :D

GLass eyes for BJD and Acrylics for my pullips :)

    19. Yes I think there is a big differeance between acylics and glass... some acrylics lack the depth that glass or urethane have but then again I have seen some acryclic or rather photos of them in that supprised me that they were acrylic so I guess alot depends on the brand.company as well.

    20. Sometimes it depends, if I can't get a certain colour or style, and it's only available in acrylic then I'll have to settle for that, I haven't tried silicone though, but it's usually glass and urethane eyes all the way for me. :D
