Which do you prefer plastic, acyrlic, silicone or glass eyes?

Sep 1, 2005

    1. I like Soom eyes best of all. They really look human-like to me and I love how they give a doll a different expression depending on the angle you look. I like glass eyes better than acrylic but less than Soom. And as for acrylic... once I saw the difference, I never want them again.

    2. Personally, I prefer soft, realistic types of eyes like eyeco.

I find glass eyes incredibly heavy and unwieldy, I find it hard to position them.

I also like some kinds of cheapo acrylic eyes they can be quite beautiful at a fraction of the cost.

    3. I'm still yet to find some eyes im truly satisfied with. but heres my eye collection so far.
The softglass attract dust and hair so much :(
I guess if i could find nice glass i'd be happy, these were all 6-15 usd (dollmores were a gift)

clockwise starting top left the sizes are 19mm,18mm,16mm,18mm

    4. I've tried acrylic, silicone and glass eyes before, I have to say glass eyes come out tops for my resins. My Midori was the one who converted me since she came with glass eyes and I haven't looked back since. I find them just so much more satisfying and I really appreciate the craftsmanship that comes from hand blown glass too.

    5. I love glass eyes.

After I changed my DZ Nina 's eyes from her default acrylic eyes to Volks HG eyes, she lighted up. I mean, literally lighted up! She now looks full of energy and much more adorable. A comparison can be seen here, I'm sorry that the page is in Chinese ...

(By the way, she is wearing her old acrylic eyes on my avatar.)

The same goes to my AS Lilith-SP. When she first arrived I put DZ Nina's acrylic eyes on her. Now she is wearing a pair of glass eyes that I got from Doll Hearts. I was told that they were "ED eyes" and were "made in Germany" but I'm not too sure as I know nothing about them (whoops!). :doh

I have a pair of AS glass eyes as well but I haven't tried them yet. As for the quality, they are not as good as my Volks HG eyes and "ED eyes".

    6. I've only seen glass and acrylic eyes so far and I've heard silicon is kind of squishy and dust gets stuck to them really easily.

So far after trying to set a pair of acrylic eyes in my friend's doll I went crazy because it was so hard to position them right. I definitely prefer glass eyes, especially with the stems on the back, they look nice and they're easy to position and move around.

    7. I love the Gumdrop Eyes (urethane) best. They have more demenision in their design so to me they look more realistic. I also love German glass eyes. Both are quality. Gumdrop eyes are expensive, but very pretty! German glass eyes can be very expensive too depends on the depth of quality chosen. They can be heavy, something to consider with the german glass eyes.

I recommend trying a few different eyes in different materials to see what you like, start with inexpensive eyes and maybe one or two expensive ones. Good Luck!

    8. I have to say I really love Urethane the most, but they're so hard to come by, so most of my dolls wear the highest-quality glass I can find. So purely based on look, urethane is my favourite, but factoring in look and convenience, I prefer glass. Higher-quality silicone (such as Soom) eyes aren't bad either.

    9. I don't particularly have a preference in general...

but I prefer acrylic eyes and last, glass eyes...

    10. So far glass eyes :)

    11. What about High dome or low dome? or the half eyes?

Do they high domes give more depth?

    12. Having had in hand acrylic, silicone and glass, I can say that so far I am more than satisfied with my glass eyes. I have changed all my doll's eyes into this kind.

I must say, though, that there are obvious differences between brands for the same kind of material. To put an example, the acrylics than came with my El two years ago were not as good as the ones that came with my Unoa Boy.

As to high and low dome, I have had positive experiences with both, so I can't help much!

    13. I've only owned acrylic and silicone eyes and of those two I prefer silicone.
But someday when I have some more money to use, I'll give all of my dolls glass eyes or at least most of them. I really love the look glass eyes give.

    14. I really love glass eyes... I would LOVE to have a couple pair of hand-blown glass eyes...

    15. What do you think the difference between hand blown eyes and regular method manufacture?

    16. Depends on the doll, actually. I've had dolls that looked like crap with $50 silicone eyes but look beautiful in $8 acrylics, and I've seen dolls where nothing but beautiful hand-blown glass will do to capture the light and life in their faces. I tend to purchase a bit of everything and try it out--if it doesn't look good in one of my dolls, chances are good it will look excellent in one of my friends'! I've probably given and traded away $150 worth of eyes just because I was glad to have homes for them where they looked good and made somebody happy. :)

    17. I have two pairs of acrylic eyes for SeNii...a gold/yellow pair that came with him from his previous owner **dont know the company** and then a pair of blue Dollmore eyes. The gold ones are nice, but rather flat...and a size too big...but the dollmore eyes are just lovely! they photograph wonderfully!!! and they do have a lovely color and depth

    18. I really like glass eyes, but my Luke came with the most amazing blue acrylic ones which look awesome, so it probably depends from doll to doll. Sometimes I like the smooth appearance of glass eyes and the soft gradient in colour. Other times I like the more textured appearance of acrylic eyes.

    19. To me there's nothing that can ever compare to Eyeco eyes. They are SO fantastic in their colours, so incredibly lifelike, and they have a wide variation of eyes to select from.
They are quite expensive though. around 36-38 dollars for one pair in bjd size... but theyre worth it, believe me.

    20. I would say tha 30-35 are average price for some glass eyes but once you are on the board more you will prices like 100$ for one eye... I have seen urathane eyes go for average 60 dollars but there are others from japanese market that at more...
