Which do you prefer plastic, acyrlic, silicone or glass eyes?

Sep 1, 2005

    1. :v From what I've seen, it's glass all the way. I like how deep they look. n-n I'll deifinitely be buying my boy glass eyes.

    2. On the subject of eyes, does anyone know what's happened to Souldoll eyes? All the eyes listed on the site are the anime ones, there aren't any 'normal' looking eyes. Does this mean new Souldolls come with these anime eyes or will they come with more human looking eyes that are unavailable to buy?

    3. I prefer acrylic, mostly because they resemble human eyes alot... They catch a decent amount of light and the prices are nifty... I think glass eyes look awesome, but with not detail, it kinda makes me weep... :/

    4. Hi,

I've noticed that eyes come is various shapes, such as oval and half oval etc

Can someone please explain to me what the differance is an their merits/drawbacks?

      Thanks! :)

    5. I think maybe the oval style eyes were originally designed for porcelain dolls that need that shape of eye? This is a complete guess on my part.

For BJDS, I find the oval eyes to be less rounded on the front which means they fit certain dolls better than a very round glass eye would e.g. my k-doll Karon fits oval eyes (and also soft round silicone eyes) better because his eye wells are not very deep and he has sleepy eyelids. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of colour choice for oval eyes so I don't use them very often.

The oval eyes are probably not as well suited to dolls with very big round eyes.

Some eyes are round but have a flat back. These are usually silicone or urethane. It doesn't effect how they sit in the doll, I think it's just easier for them to be manufactured that way.

    6. I've also discovered that there are pros and cons to stems on the back of eyes (they come on many acrylics and full-round glass eyes). The stem makes it much easier to reposition the eye once it's in the head without having to remove the eye and put it back in. However, depending on the eye size and your doll's head size, sometimes the S-hook will bump the stem and make your dolly go all cross-eyed unexpectedly. :doh

Most full-round acrylics are two parts though, and you can often separate and re-attach the stem as needed.

In the end, I agree with Katie_Raven... it all depends on your doll's eyewells and eye shape. Oval works well in dreamy-eyed dolls, dolls with a less rounded eye shape, and dolls with flatter eyewells. More rounded eyes work with dolls that have a very wide-eyed look to them. Experimentation will help you find the right ones for you. :) Good luck!

    7. personally, i REALLY love glass....but i will take whatever depending on the color.

    8. I like the look of glass eyes but I do like acrylic eyes because they are so cheap. I like buying acrylics when I am unsure of what color eyes or size that I want my doll to have. That way I can buy a whole mess of them without feeling too guilty.

    9. I haven't used anything other than acrylics... glass eyes are overly expensive and I'm not going to pay a ridiculous amount for eyes. :( Acrylics are fine.

    10. Hmmmm,I'm leaning more towards Silicone eyes!...But it really depends on the eyewell shape.
I just purchased some expensive Glass eyes(two pairs for my twins) only to be disapointed that they didn't fit very well!!....I love Soom Silicone eyes, but only the 14mm size! Eyeco and Masterpiece are other favorites of mine as well. I have so many glass eyes that just don't fit!!!
I find Souldoll eyes hard to photograph.....Oh, Volks metalics are wonderful to photograph, they really reflect well.........:D

      xen :)

    11. right now 5 out of my 7 dolls has glass or soom silicon eyes. The only two still with acrylics are in Malaysia and not with me.

One is a tender bee-a and his eyes are hard enough to see. At the moment I'm pretty content with him although I may get him a pair of yellow glass/urethane because they catch light better.

His girl, an Angell Studio Vera has huuuge eyes. I haven't found anything I like in her except these 16mm dollmore. The only problem with it is that I'd have liked that pair in 18mm, but dollmore doesn't do that, so I'm still looking for eyes that I may like in her in 18mm size. Hopefully glass because they catch the light better. Nooot that she really needs it with how much her eyes show, but I think it'd make for a pretty effect. I love solid coloured glass eyes <3

    12. I like glass better than acrylic in my doll. His default acrylics gave him a flat stare that was rather off-putting. I put the glass ones in and suddenly he seemed much "warmer". (Weird as that sounds.)

I haven't seen EDs or Gumdrops in person yet, but they're stunning in photographs.

    13. It looks like they have the Preimum eyes still for sale.. I think it depends on the model of you doll you get. The little animal dolls look like they all have the anime eyes but other models have 'regular' eyes ...

If I understand your question correctly that is! :doh

    14. You're probably not looking in the right place -- their premium eyes are still
under premium, and their supreme... well, under supreme. XD

I like eyes of all materials, the only type I haven't tried are urethanes, but I am
not sure I want to pay so much for eyes that look so much like glass eyes -- glass
are not exactly my favorite, although they are very reflective, they are not as realistic
as acrylics, nor have the variety acrylics have. I don't believe I've ever tried plastic eyes,
but my favorite so far are silicon (Masterpiece), followed by acrylics (Volks' metallics, and
      SoulDoll's).

      - Enzyme ^____________^

    15. I like Glass eyes. I like silicone eyes either because they can have unique pattern inside the eyes. but I was heard that my friends told me silicone eyes can be dirty easily... They used silicone eyes but they changed the eyes into glass eyes again eventually. ^^;

I like Urethan eyes too. Everpurple and Inchanted eyes (KOREAN Doll eyes makers) are all made of Urethan As I know. They are very clean and color is beautiful. Moreover, I can order specific mixed color!! I like the point. :)

    16. I haven't got many eyes yet.. but I have a pair of acrylic eyes from dollzone, acrylic eyes from Glib, glass eyes from Glib and glass eyes from dollzone.
I prefer the glass ones. Too bad they are more expensive, but they are really nice. They are more real looking than the acrylic eyes I have.

So for my dolls who wear acrylic eyes at the moment, I will update them to glass eyes at some point.

I have no experience with sillicone eyes or such.

    17. For the cheaper option but lots of shine/depth I like Volks Metallic acrylic eyes ($9 a pair!).
For my dolls "permenant" eyes, I live and die by Ginarolo eyes. They're not massively expensive but theyre glass and wonderfully detailed.

    18. Currently I only have acrylic eyes but I'm saving up for glass eyes +____+

I like glass and urethane eyes, they seem to catch the light nicely.

    19. I love glass eyes the most, but I usually use acrylic or silicone because they're more lifelike..

    20. I like the styles of Acrylic, however my recent attachment with Glass ones are tilting me another way.
