Which do you prefer plastic, acyrlic, silicone or glass eyes?

Sep 1, 2005

    1. I prefer the glass, but there's some good acrylics also.

    2. I like both silicone and glass eyes. But generally speaking I prefer the color of silicone eyes~

    3. Most defiantly glass.
They have a more life like feel to them than the others.
Though the often don't come in wakey or pale color/designs.

    4. I have 2 pairs of acriylic and one of glass.... And I really love the glass one!
It is so shiny and even though the acrylic are more "realistic" in a way, the glass give a more big impact, the color is more pur....

For the other kinds, I have never seen any XP

For now I like glass better :)

    5. I like some kind of acriylic eyes that are not very shiny or w/o iris. I prefer dreaming head and fantastic expression o_o

    6. GLASS!
They make your doll look way more realistic, and they usually photograph much better.

Any other kind of eye will melt really easy too, if they come in contact with certain substances.

    7. I really prefer glass eyes, they look better, i like some soom eyes, but i always ends using glass eyes^^

    8. Just popping on in to update my two cents. :)

Acrylics: as long as they're not pixelated, I don't mind them. Often fit best in my narrow-eyed doll, but have a tendency to absorb light depending on the shade. Cheap, if nothing else.

Silicone: Nice and squishy, but sometimes a pain to get positioned just right. They do catch the light very nicely and clean up quickly with a bit of canned air - no dust issues here.

Glass: Moderately expensive, but the higher-end brands are well worth it. Tend to suffer from the same issue as acrylics as far as absorbing light, but not quite as bad. Not as many unusual colors or pupils for my taste though.

Urethanes: Expensive but gorgeous. Provided you get a well-matched pair [as they are handmade and thus imperfect] they easily outrank the other three as far as color and price. Very customizable depending on the maker. My personal favorite.

Your mileage may vary - but by far I prefer to pay more for the urethanes, and feel they're well worth it.

    9. I don't have a preference, to me it's all about color and detail. I have glass eyes I do not like, and I have acrylics which I love because I love the color and detail.

Glass eyes with flat backs are the easiest for me, but don't come in a huge variety of colors.

    10. Calli_Ann I agree with you about acyrilics. It's too bad they don't reflect light very well though.

At first I hated glass eyes with a passion. The color was too monotonous and blank. Now I keep looking for a pair of purple glass eyes so I guess I like them now lol.
I used to only have acyrilics because I thought the coloring looked real.
Volks' metallic eyes aren't that realistic but they're cool.
Then my mom gave me a pair of silicone eyes. After a while they got so dull. I didn't realize it was because of dust until after I dissected them.:doh
Hm so I guess since most of my eyes are acryilics they're my favs.

    11. i have never had resin or acrylic, yet, but i do have plastic eyes and glass ones. i think that out of the ones that i have i love glass the most. the plastic is nice, but when you shine light from a certain angle, it reflects strangely off of the color piece in the eye. the glass eyes i find to have a lot of depth. not to mention that they appear to follow you regardless of what angle you are looking at them.

i would really like to get resin eyes if i could. the color is so beautiful and deep, like glass eyes, but in my opinion more intense

    12. I preferred glass until I got my first urethane pair. now there's no turning back for me, I love the realism and depth of urethanes

    13. Because my experience with other types of eyes thus far has been pretty limited to acrylics it's hard for me to make proper judgment. I've only own one pair of glass eyes, but as they didn't fit any of my dolls well I couldn't really make a fair decision as to what I actually thought about them. I like my acrylics for what they are, but even though I have the basic colors of what I need for my guys' characters ( blue, gray, brown, etc. ), in the future I'd like to obtain the exact right shade of these colors in higher quality eyes. Not really sure what that'll be just yet but as I've heard such good things about urethanes and certain brands of glass I'll probably look into those. ^_^

    14. I am a complete noob when it comes to eyes, and am in the process of looking for a new pair for my doll at the moment.

But I dont understand why people think glass eyes look more realistic and have more depth when all of the ones I have found only have flat solid colors which look nothing like real human eyes? So far the only eyes I have found that actually have similar details to real eyes have been acrylic. :(

I have also been hearing a lot of people commenting on silicone eyes, as opposed to glass. The pair of eyes I've found that I really like say they are soft glass made of silicone. Is silicone a variation of glass that is considered not to be as good? I am so confused...

    15. glass but souldoll's eyes are wonderful..and I don't think they are glass.

    16. I find Masterpiece eyes vary wildly in quality and beauty. I have some that are absolutely stunning in color, realism and glossyness, and others that look just like cheap acrylics and were not worth the wait nor the money.

I like them for dolls with eyewell gaps that I can't fix with sanding. I detest gaps!

I like them for tinies where there's not a lot of room to set the eyes easily inside the small head space.

I also like the unusual and metalized/metallic colors for my tinies because they add a little bling to a small face and it lights them up a bit.

I've got some MP eyes dating from when they first opened their doors for business, and they've held up well, no discoloration or air bubbles/separation issues. So I've been lucky, I've heard others have had problems with this.

    17. Can't stand silicone. It's all sticky and gross. Acrylic is okay. Some of them I really like, like Masterpiece's acrylics. Love glass, but specific kinds. Flat color is good, and ones with certain iris patterns. I don't like ones with weird looking swirls/lines. Urethane eyes, especially those from Enchanted Doll, are my favorites.

    18. I've only used silicone but after reading this thread I guess I should start checking different options

    19. I also like glass eyes best^^

    20. I have some glass eyes, acrylic eyes and silicone eyes. The glass eyes are nice but I prefer the silicone ones. Light seems to refract in them and they have the appearance of moisture as with real eyes. I am very interested in the urethane eyes though, they look amazing. I think I'll buying some of those next.
