Which do you prefer plastic, acyrlic, silicone or glass eyes?

Sep 1, 2005

    1. I do prefer glass eyes - acrylics are just...bad...

Soom eyes are pretty good as well but you need to get them into the light so they can pick it up and reflect nicely for photographs.

Depending on what you want to do with the dollies, I'd say go for glass eyes if you want them to catch light easily for photographs otherwise, if you just want them to look pretty any type of eyes will do as long as they are the ones you want for your doll :D

    2. For me, it is a toss-up between silicone and glass. However, I still have and use acrylic eyes at times n_n

    3. acrylics are not the best, silicone eyes are not that bad, but glass eyes are the best

    4. I became the captive of the feel of a material of the "resin eye" recently.
It's looks of soft and moist, very much for my doll. X)

    5. Glass eyes are my first loves, for the way that photograph, however, I agree with Milky way in that resin eyes are 'wet' looking, and just have an overall neat look about them. it's a tie between glass and resin for me, i suppose.

    6. I prefer glass, they look gorgeous and are durable.

    7. Glass. But urethane's even nicer, judging by photographs. *drool* I don't want to drop the money on them, though, until I know exactly which color suits my doll.

    8. Glass is by far the prettiest, BUT acyrlic can loook amazing too. Both have a different look but both look great. Right now all my dollies are wearing acyrlic and they look good i think.

    9. Hmm... It really depends on the brand. Some acrylics look terrible, some look pretty good.
Glass eyes... I don't know, most of them just look dead to me. Flat. The most important thing to me with eyes, is having good iris detail, so they look real. Most glass eyes I've seen just don't have that, or they'll have that random threading, which looks like a fake glass marble, not an eye, or that super neat striping that also looks really fake. I suppose the light refraction is good, but I can't stand that fake look.
I vastly prefer silicone eyes, they've got that real, rubbery, almost wet look to them, and they refract light quite well. Plus, they squish into the eye socket better.
Urethane eyes... I've only seen one brand I would consider buying, and it has a sort of 'folded' crinkle to the iris, which looks incredible. But ouch... so expensive!

    10. what is the difference between high dome and low dome? which is better?

    11. I've owned every different kind of eye, and I have to say that if I can find what I want in glass, that is my first choice.
Ultimately though, it depends on the doll/character I'm creating! I had an expensive pair of glass eyes on order for my Dollstown Soph, but while waiting for them decided to try a pair of 6.00 DIY plastic eyes (you couldn't even call them acrylic). I ended up keeping the cheap plastic DIY eyes because they were just right for her!
I like urethane eyes just fine, but I don't like how difficult they are to get, or the long wait time. However, if the pair I needed for the particular doll I was creating happened to be special-order urethanes, I'd just bite the bullet and do it.
The only kind of eye I tend to actively dislike and go out of my way to avoid is silicone eyes. I find them overpriced and problematic. They smudge too easily/are too difficult to clean and I find them difficult to set well. Of the silicone companies Soom is the best, but yeah, I try to avoid them. Luckily I've never seen a pair of silicone eyes I can't find the equivalent of or better in glass/urethane/other.
As for acrylics... well they just tend to be too easy and cheap imho. I have had certain dolls in the past that have used them, though.
Ultimately it tends to be a case-by-case thing. What color/type of eye I need first, and what material it's available in second.

High-dome eyes have a tall crystal lens or cornea. They tend to be best for open-eyed dolls. Narrow or dreaming eyed dolls tend to do better with low-dome eyes, I've found, they just fit better.

    12. I just lost my whole reply LOL darn !
Ok, I personally find I love glass, and urethane. I have on pair of acrylic that I
like but they are just ok compared to the others. The reason that I found I like
the glass and urethane is that the eyes 'follow' you and when you take pictures
I think it makes for a better picture. They just have more depth. But then it's
all about the 'eyes' for me. My non-BJD friends think I am a bit crazy for spending
what I do on eyes but they make all the difference for me. Silicone is the most
annoying, they are hard for me to place, and get mucky constantly. They do have
some very nice colors though but not enough for me to fight with them.
Just like anything some glass is better than other. I have a pair of Ginarolo's
that are beautiful and my Luts are very nice.

    13. Definitely glass eyes. I have bad impression on my first two pairs of acyrlic eyes which came with dolls that I ordered.

    14. I persnally love the silicone and glass eyes...but some acrylics are quite nice too. Generally I find acrylics to be lower quality and not as nicely designed- but I do have the odd pair I really like. I love Soom's silicone eyes though and I have some beautiful green glass eyes that I don't know who they're by as they came with a doll I bought.

    15. I like glass the most.
Other materials I use only if the color I want is not available in glass.

    16. I hope this isn't too far off topic, but I can't find a better thread to post this in.. I once saw a post where someone mentioned the name of certain eyes that would follow you while you looked at them. Or seemed to, ya know what I mean. What are those eyes called? I want to get some for my doll, but whenever I try searching for tracking eyes or something similar, I can't find them. ;(

    17. Most glass eyes with a dome (A high dome is best) will follow you. I have a pair of Dollmore glass eyes in and they tend to follow you around.

    18. It's probably about Zouks (Zoukeimura), but yeah-- as Lyddia mentioned, most high dome eyes will follow you. Actually my Leeke glass eyes are far better than Zouks when it comes to "following" (had a chance to compare). I was really curious about those legendary Zouks, I was planning to buy a pair off marketplace... but then I saw them on a dollmeet and they are just pretty glass eyes for me, not really worth the money.

    19. Maybe it's me, but I don't like the look of glass eyes. They look really flat..and I've seen some very detailed/amazing acrylics.

    20. Thanks! :)
