Which do you prefer plastic, acyrlic, silicone or glass eyes?

Sep 1, 2005

    1. I prefer glass, because I think that they seem more realistic than the others.

    2. I really like silicone but can not afford them. I love the variety of colors and styles of the acrylics and their cheaper price tag. Glass are beautiful but you dont have the same variety as with acrylics. Silicone is like glass in effects it creates in pictures, making the eyes appear more realistic than acrylics, but come in wider types/colors/etc than glass - and you dont have to worry as much about scratching or damaging them

    3. Well in order..

Silicone is by far my favorite. I really like Soom but have seen others that are nice as well. I think they fill the eye well the best as if there are any imperfections in your eye socket or shape it fills them out well. They don't break if you drop them and they are fairly cheap as a whole. They come in Immense amounts of detail and color far more then any other material I have seen to date.

Glass as pretty, but Not as detailed as silicone PLUS you can pay an arm and a leg for them and if you did what I did with my first pair (Purple color Volks) and Drop them BOTH at the same time on a tile floor your SOL.. one pretty much shattered and the second chipped like there was no tomorrow. PLUS if your eye socket is not prefect then you have gaps. :(

Plastic / Acrylic I will group together I really dont care for them. i would rather shell out the extra few bucks and get the Silicone ones. The detail is not a fine they scratch and fog up a lot. And they can leave gaps like glass can.

    4. I have like three pairs of eyes, so I can't really comment.

I do prefer glass because they are easier to position. My guy is wearing his default Soom eyes still, and although they're gorgeous in photos, they are a pain to get straight when I put them in. They smoosh into the eye area and then go in a different direction as I'm pushing the plasticine into place. x_x It might not be the same issue with larger eyes. I think I'll buy 18mm for my girl to see how they work for her. I do love how they fill in the eye wells, and look very realistic and detailed. They also don't break. :D I also know that if my house burns down, my dollies melt, my silicone eyes will still be there. :B

    5. Glass definately, they just give the doll's eyes so much more feeling and light compared to other material. I've tried acrylic, and they just give off a plastic sheen.

    6. I only have one set of eyes right now, and they're glass. They're beautiful, and I love to look at them under lamp light or sunlight.
They're not detailed or realistic, but I don't want my Artemis to have realistic eyes.

    7. I don't really have a preference at all. As long as the eye color and style is what I am looking for to suit my doll, I am fine with whatever it is made out of.

    8. I prefer silicone eyes because of realistic color variations in them, but urethane have some of the more vibrant colors I've ever seen. Acrylics seems too glossy to me; they're nice in person, but they don't photograph very well, IMO.

    9. I've got glass, urethane and acrylic eyes. Of them all, I have to say I prefer glass, acrylic is too flat and while the urethane really does have more depth and light than glass I think it's actually too vibrant to be realistic.

Plus I hate the way urethane eyes are so easy to scratch compared to glass eyes.

    10. I have tried only acrylics and glasses, but I think I like glass eyes more, because they don't break so easily and the seemed more realistic than acrylics.

    11. I prefer glass more than the other types because of their reality. I'm not one to put "unusual" eyes in my dolls, like no pupils, odd shapes, etc., so the most "natural" is the best.

I love Ginarolo's Style 400 eyes, when I can afford them!

    12. My heart goes out to urethane in terms of eyes. :) They have a sense of realism, more so than glass in my opinion. Also recently, I have found that resin eyes can be gorgeous as well. The downside is however, they are mostly dealers' eyes which makes them quite hard to get. :sweat

    13. i bought glass rainbow eyes for my doll and i like them best

    14. Urethane then glass- I love the gradients in colour which they give, as oppose to the already printed on white on acrylic eyes which cannot give that effect.

    15. I personally like silicone eyes best. Beautiful colors and depth! I have many tender eyed boys and they position wonderfully in difficult eye wells. I like like glass as well but there's nothing I hate more than buying eyes and finding out they don't fit well and cause gaps. >_< I hear there are beautiful acrylic eyes in the world but every pair Ive tried were flat and unimpressive. I just don't bother anymore.

    16. I prefer silicone eyes. I like they way they reflect light! Sometimes the colors in acrylic or glass eyes can be very interesting, but I prefer the way silicone eyes shine.

    17. I've had all the eyes that are offered and I like glass and silicone the best. They take light beautifully and are very realistic. I don't like acrylic because they tend to be flat.

    18. I don't know yet..... still learning so much . !!

    19. Here's my personal opinion on the eyes I've owned. ^^ I now prefer to use glass in all of my dolls.

Enchanted Doll (urethane): My fav in terms of quality/vibrancy. My favourites are Sweety and Milky type eyes.
Pros - Colours are vibrant and they have a lot of depth to them. No stems so they won't get in the way of the hooks. Can choose between high and low dome. Lots of choice in ordering custom eyes.
Cons - They can scratch easily if you don't take care. I'm fussy when it comes to eye positioning, so if you're like me and like to fiddle with the eyes a lot, you have to be careful not to scratch them. Colour can vary quite a bit from the website photos.

EA Gumdrops (urethane): I really like the texture in these eyes!
Pros - No stems, nice texture, really nice colours. Luminous.
Cons - Be careful not to scratch them. The outer ring on the iris can be a little wide. Takes a long time to make.

Hand glass eyes (these are the same as Ginarolo eyes ^^)
Style D24 (my favourite type of glass eyes)
Pros - Solid. Don't scratch easily like urethane. Nice clear colours, nice threading, catches light very well. You can ask for the stems to be cut off.
Cons - Low/Medium dome only. There are stems if you don't ask for them to be cut off to the base.
      Style D400
Pros - Solid. Really nice depth due to high dome. Nice colours. You can ask for the stems to be cut off.
Cons - High dome only. Threading can be unrealistic, but if you prefer this type of threading then this wouldn't be a negative. =]

      Ruddy Peach (glass):
Pros - Solid. Don't scratch easily. Nice depth and luminosity.
Cons - Full sphere shape so it can be a bit heavy and take up more space.

Kanis Augen (glass): These are sold at leekeworld (K.Round type) but can be found here.
Pros - Very luminous for a low dome! Nice threading and colours.
Cons - Hollow glass, so it's very delicate. Easily shattered and chipped. Is a full sphere with stem, so can get in the way of the hooks. I kept chipping small pieces of glass off the stem (dangerous!) while moving the S-hook in my doll's head around.

Kanis Augen also make solid glass eyes, which can be found at Cool Cat. Here for half-round solid. Here for half-round with stems. They are different styles from each other.

      Acrylics:
Pros - Cheap, can be really nice if they are higher quality.
Cons - Flat-looking in real life and photos. Don't have the luminosity and depth of glass/urethane.

    20. Silicon hands down... It is easier to make them fit better into stubborn eyeholes and they are very durable, beautiful, and easier to maintain IMHO.
