Which do you prefer plastic, acyrlic, silicone or glass eyes?

Sep 1, 2005

    1. I love glass the best. I am fan of dark colours, and they look more deep and colour is more rich than in acrylic eyes (thouth, acrylic eyes may be really pretty too, like Grib eyes on eLuts, those are really pretty!) and they are much easier to put in head than silicone eyes. Silicone eyes are a bit sticky and soft, so when I wanted to turn eyes in other direction it was far more troublesome than with glass or acrylic eyes (those you just can push by tiny stick).

    2. Um i didn't see a thread like this but please delete if there ever is.

I don't have a doll yet but i have been thinking, what is the difference between glass and silicone? w/c type of eyes looks better? Please correct me if i am wrong but i have read somewhere that silicone eyes collects more dust than glass eyes. If that is true how do you clean it? I would love to see your replies. Thank you very much.
      ^_^

      add:
it's just that i like to compute before anything else.

    3. They look different, I like both looks. And silecons do collect dust faster. I dont find it a problem, I clean them by holding them under the tap (water)

edit: oh yeah, silecons fit better becous they are a bit squishy they form after the eyehole more then glass eyes.

    4. Try this board. You can search images of glass, silicone, and acrylic eyes. More often than not, the type of eyes your doll wears boils down to personal preference.

      Good luck.

    5. Glass eyes are the best ^__^
The color of the glass eyes are more beautiful and realist than acrylic or silicone eyes and the quality are the best.

    6. Urethane eyes won me over in the end. Now, I don't consider one of my dolls 'finished' until they have either a pair of Mystics or Gumdrops. XD

But I do use silicone and acrylic as 'temporary' eyes, if I want to try out a certain colour, don't have the money or it's not ordering time for either of the two companies mentioned above.

Glass is something I've never actually tried, but I've heard a lot of good things about them, so I suppose I might try a pair in the future.

      :)

    7. Several months back I said that I really only like glass eyes, but now that I have owned my Souldoll Soo-Hyun, and know how his acrylics look, I can say that some acrylics aren't bad either, depending on how they are, how they are made, and how they look. His are flat on the back, and made of a dense material, I like that. And his eyes, they're so tiny and cute! ^0^ Had it not been for those, I would have probably never liked acrylics again. But, I will still have to go with glass as my favorite, I think they are quite attractive.

    8. I've always used acrylics, but I am a recent convert to glass eyes. :D

    9. I've got Glib acrylics in my BBB and RS. My two elfdolls came with Sooms, which I guess are silicone. Beautiful look, but it seems that every little speck of dust sticks to them, so I'm not as happy with them as I thought I'd be. I intend to buy a good pair of glass eyes one day so I can see if I like them.

    10. I think sillicone offers a little more flexibilty ( no pun intended ) since I was able to use my 18 mm silicone eyes in my cherry blossom alice eye holes ( I am not sure what size alice uses 12mm maybe?)

However why silicone does provide some very beautiful colors so far glass and uranthane are very beautiful and seem to give off more depth to me.

    11. Acrylics look nice but lack depth. Silicone eyes have a nice color and are soft and squishy but attract dust and lint very easily especially if you wrap your dolls in bunting bags. I prefer glass and urethane. They have a nice color and depth to them. I was lucky enough to take advantage of the Ever Purple sale and got myself several pairs of nice urethane eyes.

I want to know what type of putty everyone here is using. I was using Fimo for a while but quickly stopped when it melted a plastic container I was using.

    12. I use the gray Art eraser you know the gummy kind that comes in a square. I have used this for years and its never stained or gotten overly hard. You can find it at art stores. I buy mine at Aarron brothers its called "Design kneaded Rubber" for $1.25. one sqaure can hold in at least the pairs of eyes.

I also use hot glue for when I really dont want to take a chances of the eyes popping out ( like when I am taking my dolls somewhere for show)

hot glue comes off easy and its sturdy but can be messy and hot of course.

    13. I've only handled acrylics and glass eyes, and I can say that I prefer glass. I really dislike the flat-ness of the acrylics, they lack depth, glow, they don't "track", etc.

    14. The very very very best pair of eyes I own, the ones with the most clarity, that make the doll look directly into the camera, that seem to have even a spark of cognitive life... are a pair of cheap acrylic DoD default eyes I got years ago with my DoC Si :XD: I kept them and sent off the more expensive glass ones I'd bought for the girl who's wearing the acrylics when I sold him because the acrylics are just so perfect. I have never before nor since managed to get a pair of eyes that are anywhere near as good - and these were free!

I do have a pair of silicon eyes, and if they didn't look so darn awesome in my girl I'd probably sell them - they're impossible to work with >_< I find the soft squishyness too difficult to manage, and my poor Viyol has now got a strange kind of squint because of my trying to mess with her eyes >_< As mentioned by someone earlier, they also attract lint and dust a lot. I've also got mostly glass eyes in my other dolls (possibly all, I'd have to check - I don't change the eyes much!) and I don't find they're any better or worse than any other eyes - well, not as good as the awesome acrylics in my Vera, but for the sake of this post I'm not counting them (I think it's a fluke of a well-painted face-up and pure, unadulterated luck ).

I don't tend to buy eyes... unless I have a specific look I need... Or the defaults are hideous (for the character). Most of the time I choose dolls for their default look anyway, so I like the default eyes  I was actually a little upset when I requested 'Dark' eyes for my Vera and she came with bright blues! But they don't fix them in for you anyway, so it's ok - they went to a new home quick-smart ^_^

As for putty, I just cheapy cheap WHSmiths basic white-tack  It works perfectly, and is something silly like 50p a pack (perhaps not that cheap, but I could be wrong :XD: I can't remember). I bought a pack about a year ago, have used it on loads of dolls and given a whole load of it away to people, and still have about 3/4 of a pack left :XD:

    15. Right now.. I believe all the eyes I'm wanting for my future dolls, and my girl atm, they're glass eyes..

I don't have any real preference when it comes to eyes. I just like whichever one appeals to me and the character most. Lol. I've seen amazing eyes in all different materials! ;D

    16. I am really picky when it comes to eyes.

After asking about, sorting through hundreds of pictures, and trying out various types of eyes, my favourite type of eyes are:

Kanis Augen--These glass eyes are made in Germany. The two pairs that I have are both the same style, low domes with some threading. However, there are so much depth to them and they look very real. When they catch any amount of natural light, they luminate so beautifully! It's almost sort of eerie as to how human-like they are.

Anyway, it took me a while to find them without ordering directly from the company (which has a $70 shipping fee). Leekeworld sometimes carries them. They are what they call the K.Round eyes. I just found out that Cool Cat sells them as well.

My *only* gripe about them is that they have stems in the back which is somewhat problematic with the S-hook. If they are ordered from the company site, flat-backs can be purchased.

I don't know about the ones from Cool Cat, but the ones from Leekeworld are also hollow and very delicate to give a heads up.

    17. I have never owned silicone eyes but when I handled them I loved the feel of the eyes and they look pretty darn good in my friend's DoT Shall.

Personally, I prefer glass eyes. (*_*) they have such a sheen that just grabs me

    18. Something I just thought of ( which you all of you probably already know:doh is how the eye wells on each doll affect which type of eyes you prefer with that particular doll.

There are some eyewells that I have seen where the eye in resting not completely in the socket, say if its a hard type glass etc you wont be able to get it in but if its soft then it wil be easier..

    19. I thought glass eyes were better than acrylic, in a sense they do make Kal's eyes more dark and make him look more innocent and dreamy in a sense.

But I change my mind when I change his eyes back to acrylic, they make him look more sharper and his stare intense, which is the look I want for him ^^

So, currently, I'm a fan of acrylic eyes.

    20. I'm quite fond of glass eyes, they are very nice and fitting for my dolls characters. the puki has acryllics though, but the others all have glass ones.
