Which do you prefer plastic, acyrlic, silicone or glass eyes?

Sep 1, 2005

    1. I'm on the fence between glass and acrylic eyes. Both have their pros and cons. I have not yet personally tried urethane or silicon eyes, so I cannot comment on those, yet. ;)

Ultimately, it all depends on what kind of 'look' you want in the end.

      Glass;
These are great for solid colour eyes in dolls that will be displayed or handled with lots of care. They are classic, classy, and photograph well. The nice ones are more expensive, and they can break. But they do clean up nice if you get some eyelash glue on them by accident. The eyes are luminous, and very 'doll-like' (due to the physical limitations of the glass).
      I like 'doll-like' eyes. X3

      Acrylic;
Use these babies if you're in the market for awesome FUN eyes like Volks' Animatics, zombie eyes, or graphic eyes (like Dollmore's 'butterfly' and script accented eyes). High-end acrylics like Glastic eyes can give a VERY natural look with realistic colour veining in the iris, which cannot be accomplished with glass. Acrylics are more versatile in the selection and colours available. The price is affordable enough that if they do get damaged, they can be replaced without too much strain on your wallet. Unfortunately, acrylics can easily become scuffed, cracked and yellowed, and they aren't always as luminous as glass.

I use both acrylic and glass eyes in my collection. XD

    2. I've recently become a fan of urethane eyes after receiving my first two pairs from Enchanted Doll. Compared to what Reaiah used to wear (silver gray eyes from Glip), urethanes have so much depth that even if you position the eyes in just one direction, it's as if the eyes are following you when you move. XDXDXD

    3. I just got a pair of SOOM acrylic eyes and they're great! the whites are squishy, and the centers are very durable, I don't fear dropping them. They're also very luminous and real!

    4. I only have glass and acrylic eyes so I can't say anything about the other kinds.
(Though I've seen silicone eyes and they felt funny. Soft.. =^.^= )

The glass eyes look very good if the lightning is good, but they're usually, Well, not so detailed (Though there are exceptions.) and sometimes they are a bit unsymmetrical. (The other pupil is bigger than the other, etc.)
Sadly, I haven't seen any glass eyes with cat-like pupils yet..

I love acrylic eyes because they come in so many colours. *w*
Sadly, they aren't as shiny as the glass ones but they sure look realistic enough for me. ^^

    5. I prefer glass eyes. :)

    6. Anyone knows what "ENCHANTED EYES" from the Iplehouse EID Jessica doll means? View http://www.iplehouse.net/shop/step1.php?number=1640 where they describe you can have the option of ENCHANTED eyes for USD35 more. Wondering if those are glass or some special material?

    7. I think I've been through almost every eye brand out there by now, with the exception of some urethanes like Droprops and Mystics. *_* But I think I've finally found the brand that is the "it" eye for me, and those are Hand Glass Craft eyes (easily available from Ginarolo here on DoA). Link to piccie of my Soom Lazule wearing them.

I've had Zouks and I didn't find them to be nearly as realistic, deep and sparkling as HGC. *_* I'll be converting all my dolls to HGC when my budget recovers.

    8. Glass eyes and silicone eyes.

    9. This thread is really helpful~ Now I know which kinds of eyes I want to buy...

    10. I've never had silicone eyes... So far I prefer glass, but the ones I always use in my boy are acrylic (couldn't find red 18mm in glass at the time) XD

    11. I've used only acrylic and glass...and while I like some of the acrylic eyes I've seen. I wouldn't buy them, glass has won my heart in this round...I just think that they look better personally ^^

But opinions are always able to change so we'll see what I think in the future ;)

As for urethrane and silicone? Haven't tried them personally...

    12. For me its glass eyes. A beautiful pair of glass eyes can really bring life to a doll.

    13. you forgot urethane! I want to try other types... urethane is really expensive but someday lol, they look beautiful in pictures... glass... I have 1 doll with them that i haven't really photographed much yet although they look beautiful... I know for sure I'm not particularly fond of acrylics.

    14. I only used glass and acrylics. Those glass eyes came standard with the doll and had very few detail and didn't look real at all (even for red eyes). After I bough some Dollmore acrylics and I just adore the depth in the eyes of my dolls. Pretty, deep colors with beautiful gradient in it...

    15. I tend to go between Acrylic and glass right now. I go for only top quality acrylics that have very bright colors (Glib owns me). However if I need a brighter color than acrylics can offer or need eyes to show in my SwD Myu's tiny eye slits or just a color I like, I go with glass. I never liked glass when I started, but they show real nice in pictures.

    16. I like all 3 kinds of eyes. Acrylics are so cheap you can buy a lot in different sizes & colors so you can decide what looks best on your doll. Silicone eyes are nice if you have a doll with wonky eyewells. They're squishy so you can force them to fit properly; and Soom eyes come in lots of fantasy colors as well. High quality glass eyes look so real and even the cheap glass eyes track really well. Plus acrylic eyes can crack, silicone eyes can become discolored over time, but glass will last for years and always look as good as the day you bought them.

    17. Glass and urethane for "wetness" and depth. They have the most natural wet look.
Acrylic for the variety of pupil and iris designs. You can do a lot more with printed paper than with glass. They look too opaque, though, and not very natural.
Silicone for fit. They squeeze into smaller or oddly shaped eyewells fairly well.

    18. glass

persoally because they're my favorite but they also can be very beautiful, very lifelike. they can reflect light better and can have a better appearence of deminsion.

    19. I own acrylics, silicone, glass, and urethane eyes. I'll post my personal thoughts on each.

I like glass the best. I am constantly changing my eyes so my eyes need to be easy to clean and scratch resistant, which glass offers. Also they photograph well, have nice depth, and come in a variety of colors. A lot of glass eyes are the same price or cheaper than acrylics now, and even these cheaper eyes are some of my best looking eyes.

Second is urethane. They have depth, come in many colors, but also cost more. I don't use them often because I do change my eyes several times a week, and I don't want to scratch them. They can tend to look "crosseyed" in some angles because of the pupil depth. They are still very nice looking eyes.

Third is silicone. They have a nice round dome shape which gives off nice reflections, and have more depth than acrylics. However, they do get dusty quick and some of them can have that "printed" look like acrylics. I only get silicone eyes of colors that are not available in glass.

Last is acrylics. The thing I like least about them are the dome shapes, which are egg-shaped rather than round, so they have odd white reflections of the eye. I don't like the papery look of the iris. Most of all, they are hard to clean, and are easy to scratch. Acrylic eyes are the same price as Chinese glass eyes now, and I prefer the cheaper glass over acrylics. However, acrylic eyes are useful for hard-to-find 10mm and 8mm sizes.

    20. So many choices and all I have experienced is the default Lati doll eyes which i think are acrylic? They have an ugly pixelated print so I want to change to something else. I'm leaning towards silicon or acrylics from masterpiece.
Does any one know if the masterpiece acrylic eyes have a pixelated print?
