Which do you prefer plastic, acyrlic, silicone or glass eyes?

Sep 1, 2005

    1. I prefer glass.
They reflect really nicely when taking photographs and make the doll look more life-like.
      Also, acrylic has a weird pixelated print underneath the plastic which I don't like in close-up photos. And silicone eyes scare me because they're squishy! o.o;

    2. Me too!! I think the glass is the best!:fangirl:

    3. Glass!
So far I love the Volks stuff. Really sweet..

    4. Personally I really really love nice quality glass eyes. However, I'm not opposed to using acrylics as temporary eyes for a doll. They may not be as good as glass eyes, but they can still be vibrant and beautiful place holders while I find the glass eyes I want. :)

    5. I prefer really realistic looking acrylic eyes to glass----the irises are just more detailed than the usually solid color of glass eyes. I have had both kinds and I do prefer the acrylic, though the glass I do prefer in the 1/6 scale size. At that size, acrylic eyes are just too reflective and deep. But for the 1/3 and 1/4 BJD, I like the results of acrylic best. ^^

    6. Urethane. All of my dolls have been upgraded to urethane. Nothing else is like it and having them look exactly how I want is worth the expense.

    7. In the beginning I liked Soom's silicone eyes best, but these days I prefer urethane and glass. Which material I pick depends on the color and pupil size I want for a particular doll.

Acrylics have never appealed to me; the visible pixels and lack of depth are the biggest detractors.

    8. I'm a total sucker for urethanes, if I see a colour I like I tend to buy them and then wonder about getting a doll to fit.

    9. The masterpiece acrylic's are actually very nice, I have a couple pairs in my kiddos.

    10. I'm really into silicone at the moment, I think they are so real looking.

    11. Have we talked about low dome or high dome yet for eyes? Do we see a difference between the two? And if yes then what?

    12. I don't like acyrlic.. Glass eyes are ok``~
Are soom eyes kind of plastic eyes?

    13. I prefer glass, but I recieved some Enchanted Doll Milky urethane eyes with a traded doll and they're beautiful! I do have acrylic eyes, but I think some of them look really bad in close-up photographs whereas glass and urethanes behave in a very natural way. I think I would be willing to spend extra on urethane eyes in the future because I've seen how gorgeous they are in real life.

Aichan, I've got some dolls who can't wear high dome eyes, so I tend to go low dome for everyone just in case I want to switch eyes around. Is there really a difference in the way the eyes look apart from having a higher dome?

    14. I think it depends on what kind of look you want. I’m partial to acrylics myself because they can hold so much detail, but they’re not really very sturdy – I have personally managed to mess up two different makes of acrylic eyes when I removed eye putty from them... and you have to take such care of them or they will get stained from use.

Glass catches light better, but I don’t like how heavy, expensive and indistinct they can be – they don’t look “real” enough to me, but I guess that’s just my personal opinion.

I also like silicone eyes because you don’t have to modify the eyeholes if you can to use larger eyes, but depending on the make you have to actually wash them off sometimes because they catch dirt like fly catcher ribbons...

Soom eyes are, if I’m not mistaken, silicone (a type of rubber) – very flexible and authentic looking – but they may have other types of eyes too. I’m on a computer in the university library so I don’t feel very good about looking at doll sites with huge photos right now, but I could look it up later :)

    15. The glass eyes are my favorites!!! all my BJD have glass eyes because they looks more realistic in my opinion... my favorite is K.Round :D

    16. Definitely the glass eyes!!XD

    17. Jescissa
Wow I didnt even think about only certain sculpts being able to wear the high domes. To me it seems like high domes give mre depth however when you look at them from the side they might look a little weird depending on how high they are.

    18. Originally I liked acrylics but more and more I've come to love glass eyes. I like the detailing of acrylics but the matte look of them vs the shine of glass ruins that for me. Our eyes have moisture and appear more shiny than say our skin, so the eyes not catching that shiny look as come to really bother me in my dolls lol. I've yet to see silicone in person and don't know them offhand but I've heard good things. Definitely some research to do for me~

    19. I think it depends how it looks. I don't have much experience with certain kinds of eyes but I have been experimenting last weekend after buying a pair at a doll fair. I thought these eyes would look more natural. But it turned out that the pupils were fairly small which made Shinta look unfriendly, so I put his default acryllic eyes back in. Guess I've learned something :)

    20. Glass eyes are still my favorite but I've just found a new use for acrylics! I have a doll that's supposed to be an android and glass eyes always looked too realistic, but acrylics look great!
