Which do you prefer plastic,acyrlic, silicone or glass eyes?

Sep 1, 2005

    1. Each type has its ups and downs.

      I am kind of partial to glass (probably due to having previously mostly collected antique dolls where the mindset is acrylic=poor replacement=bad)
      Glass does have beautiful depth on the paperweight dome type, some glass is like a work of art, so beautiful to see. It doesn't scratch easily or yellow.

      After getting into ABJD there have been some acrylics that have really won me over, some with amazing detail to the iris, and being available in more unusual colors (this really depends on quality though) they are also a bit easier to handle, needing less putty and being alot lighter than glass.

      I have one doll wearing silicone, its great for eye holes that the lids are a bit too thick, it fills the gaps in because its flexible and squishy, however its harder to get to stay put, you need a lot of putty, and dust likes to stick to it.

    2. Masterpiece & Soom eyes are my favorites followed closely by Artistique. They all have great iris detail which gives a more realistic look. Unfortunately most of the glass eyes I've had, including default ones, have a rather flat look to the iris, no striations or color variations.

    3. Yep, it was my first face up I did actually.:)
      Oh and wanted to add, that I don't really like silicon eyes, as although they can fit into difficult eye wells,they really attract dust and hairs easily.My MNF Shiwoo has glass eyes I bought on DoA and I like those because they have a green( near the pupil) and blue graduated mix.

    4. 1. Urethane

      They've got the depth and detail and clarity along with amazing colors. I like them better than Zouks because of the amazing detail and color, actually.

      2. Glass

      Depth and clarity. Detail differs from eye to eye. I'd be happy with glass except that they don't offer a huge range of colors and color is important to me.

      3. Acrylic

      I don't like most of them, but they are more easy to afford. Most look dead and flat, although some photograph well enough. Volks metallics seem to avoid the flat, painted look. I also like Souldoll Premium eyes with the smaller irises--because they come in a great range of colors and styles and they have enough of a dome to seem to have some depth.

      4. Soft glass eyes

      Nice range of colors, styles. But they do collect dust sometimes. And sometimes aren't held well by some puttys or whatever one uses to hold them in.

      To me, eyes are extremely important. I think it's worth it to find the best-looking ones possible.

      [I've got dolls wearing Urethanes: Mystic/Eyecandies, Enchanted Dolls, (will have Gumdrops soon); Glass: Volks Zoukeimura, Volks HG, Luts, others; Acrylic: Volks metallic, Souldoll Premium; Soft: Masterpiece.]

    5. I love the look of glass hands-down. I've never found acryllics that I felt gave that same "alive" look...
      I got a pair of silicone with a head I purchased, and I have to say I do like the way they fit in the eye-sockets, but I still prefer glass overall.

      I'm VERY biased toward glass. In pics, other eyes can look nice, but in person, glass just shines really nicely.
      (though cheap glass eyes can look kinda bad too... quality of any eye is important.)

    6. i like glass eyes they look better

    7. most of my friends have glass eyes for there dolls

    8. I like glass, but it really depends on the acrylic one's in question. Some look really cheap, while others look fantastic. I like glass because they photograph well. I also love Souldoll eyes... which are acrylic, I believe.

    9. I prefer Glass eyes, but, I like any eyes with vibrant colors. hehe fixing to order the teal eyes from etherealangels.com

    10. Polymer! (er.. plastic XD)

      Sera~

    11. Hi im still new to the world of bjd having just ordered my first. Ive been looking at all the extras that you can get for them. Ive noticed that eyes come in acrylic, glass and silicone. Im having difficulty deciding what to get so i thought id get others opinions. What are peoples preferences for eyes and why? Are there pros and cons for the different eye types?

    12. Acrylic doesn't reflect light very well and can look dead. Silicone is better because of the double dome and it molds to the eyewells. For me, glass is my favourite because it looks the most life-like. But, if you want really intense eyes try urethane eyes. For for me in order of worst to best is, acrylic, silicone, glass then urethane.

      XD Looks like Twigling got to it first. <3

    13. This topic is the one that always gets asked ^_^;;;
      Basically
      glass: realistic and pretty BUT can be costly, limited in colours and a bit too glarey. Also can be hard to get in tiny sizes.
      Silicone squishy! wide range of colours, can fit in odd shapes by virtue of its godly squishiness, BUT attracts dust like @__@
      acrylic Cheap usually. Variety of colours both natural and fantastic. Available in many sizes. BUT can look plasticky, flat compared to others.

      Try searching next time ^_^;;;
      remember that you can't search for 3-letter words, so you have to search for eye*.

    14. Thanks very much for replying and all the links given. Ive got lots to consider now before buying eyes.

    15. Ok I know about glass eyes, and also acrylic, but can anyone tell me anything about silicone eyes?

      I have found a lovely pair I want for my new doll but I seem to remember someone saying the silicone ones were soft? is this right?

      Any help anyone can give is appreciated

      <hopeful smile>

    16. I'm very mixed on silicone. My Leroi has a pair of SOOM eyes, and they're wonderful. From the side they look silvery but head on you can tell the pupils are little spiders. (He's a spider spirit...)

      My Shiwoo had a pair of Masterpeice eyes for ages. I was never satisfied with them. They didn't match the colour on the website (which I checked on several monitors) and were just *meh* inducing. (I also have a DP with very small Masterpeice eyes, and even new, the "white" was this icky grey colour...) My Shiwoo looks much better in the $14 glass eyes I found at a doll show.

      Mainly I think I'm leaning towards glass, but I have a pair of urathane eyes somewhere inbetween Hong Kong and Iowa, so that might change. (If I could find a pair of glass eyes in the OMG!Purple that my Souldoll eyes are I'd be a happy girl...)

    17. I couldn't do anything but glass eyes. Anything else doesn't seem quite right to me!

    18. I have a pair of Soom eyes and Dollmore acrylic eyes. I like the variety of Soom eyes, but with quality, I dunno if I'm the most comfortable with it. I'm not saying it's bad quality, but I really do prefer the acrylic eyes better b/c they're easier to position in the eye socket b/c the cornea is not as portruded and it has the full eyeball. And I also think that Dollmore acrylics photograph well.

    19. Ive been looking at eyes for ages, my E-an isnt due to arrive for about 4 weeks. I wanted a particular colour eye for her, its been driving me insane as i couldnt quite find what i was looking for. Id asked about eye types and companies and looked at them all. Still nothing that caught my *eye*. Then i thought about looking on Leekeworld (i dont know why i hadent looked there sooner). Bingo some eyes that i liked the look of, Blue/green 16mm green ones, i just loved the iris detail. Some of the glass eyes ive seen on the sites look like they have flowers painted on their irises. Fingers crossed they look good in my E-an when she arrives. The eyes are on a plane and winging their way to me. :)

      I think everyone has their own favs, fingers crossed i like my eyes.
