Why do people put up with dolls that can't sit up?

Jun 1, 2010

    1. I have a couple Sooms and a DiM that won't sit up correctly for their lives. They always have to be propped and I swear it takes me a half hour to pose the Sooms so that they look halfway normal in their pose. But I love them anyway. I don't really "play" with these particular these dolls. I just dress them maybe once or twice a year max and leave them. Eye candy I guess--I do really love all the sculpts, so I'll sacrafice the sitting for that. I know DiM is sending out a new body, but really I don't care that much--I kind of accept them for who/what they are.

    2. 1. Do you have a doll that can't sit up? Did you contact the company? Does it bother you?
My DZ kids just do not like to sit up. I think their butts are too round?

      2. If you don't, what would you do if you got a doll like this? Do you think it's a problem?
I don't think it's a problem at all really, since i love the head mold. Guess i'll have to put up with it.

    3. 1. Do you have a doll that can't sit up? Did you contact the company? Does it bother you?

No I didn't contact the company, as many, many dolls out there, from even expensive companies, have the very same flaw in engineering. The hip well is not high enough in front to allow proper sitting. It seems to be a total sculptor's blind spot. *shrug* no idea why.

      2. If you don't, what would you do if you got a doll like this? Do you think it's a problem?
A mod of removing about a half cm from the front of the hip well fixes it easily. No idea why more companies don't check to make sure their doll can at least SIT.

I have an EID Akando and thanks to ten minutes of modding, he can sit up perfectly all by himself.

    4. My Supia Rosy (on the original 2-piece torso) has trouble sitting unaided. She is currently my most expensive doll, and I consider her to be in the upper-middle price range. She's usually sitting on a sofa, so I'm not constantly reminded of it. It does bother me sometimes, and I do occasionally consider replacing her body, but 2 considerations stop me: the Supia body is gorgeously sculpted, and I have accrued a nice collection of clothing custom fitted to her body. She's also my second oldest doll, so she has the second most clothes, as well.

However, she's also my only large mature girl, so I might become more annoyed if I get another mature female doll with a better posing body.

My other dolls sit fine; they're all cheaper than Rosy, but I think they're just as good if not better in quality to her, so it does bother me that her price is so high and yet the engineering of her body is so poor in comparison. However, her sculpt is so beautiful that I think her sculptor just concentrated more on aesthetics than engineering. I'm disappointed, but I don't want to judge too harshly an artist for concentrating on her interests. Also, Supia does seem to recognize the faults of this body because the new 3-piece torso body seems to be able to hold better poses, according to new owners.

I wouldn't get another Supia body again. As she was one of my first dolls, I wasn't as savvy and thorough in the research when I purchased her. Now, though, I wouldn't purchase a large doll in her price range if I know it has major posing issues (sitting and standing). If I love the head, I'd go for a hybrid.

It can be upsetting to find that an expensive doll has engineering issues, especially since one of the points of their articulation is to be able to pose, but I don't naturally assume that the more expensive a doll is, the better their posing (or even quality, comparatively). It definitely makes me do my research extra carefully.

    5. I think I value some kinds of posing more than others. Like I said in my post, my Apollo needs to be propped up to sit, but that doesn't bother me. I think I pay more attention to the knees and elbows than I do sitting and standing. If worse comes to worst, most dolls can sit with some help, but the knees and elbows are trickier to support.

Dollmore dolls, it seems, tend to have issues where their arms end up close to their body all the time. I called it a 'nervous pose' because it seemed like something you do when you're nervous. With my DM Kid, there is no 'subtle poses'. Her knees can't be bent a little. It's 90 degrees or nothing. It's annoying, especially when trying to dress her.

    6. 1. Do you have a doll that can't sit up? Did you contact the company? Does it bother you?

Yes, I have a doll that has troubles sitting up. For reference, he's on the original MnM male body. He can sit up, but he leans backward all Matrix style--which sort of looks goofy. Fortunately, I can make him slouch forward, which not only makes him more stable, but suits his character's personality more.
This never really bothered me. Aesthetics were always more important to me than posing. Plus, he was a sculpt I always wanted (at the time, I wasn't interested in hybridizing dolls) so when I finally got him, I overlooked his other flaws (such as his wonky wrists, sitting problems, and lack of movement in the neck).

My other dolls have no problems sitting up, but as I mentioned before, posing has never been as important for me as the sculpt itself, so I would not be bothered if they couldn't sit up properly.

    7. I have to say its irritating that dolls cannot sit. But the truth is volks can sit one of the best. Infact my SD13 girl and lift her leg in a L shape naturally when you pick her up. I do get irritated by dolls that cant sit properly like my F65 which requires locking of the hips and even then if you poke her, she will flip backwards. However I put up with it as those dolls that cant sit properly tend to stand pretty well. My Soom SG and F65 stands like a charm. Among my girls, the best sitters are the Volks SD but they are pretty much lousy posers.

    8. After having Volks dolls with the locking butt/hips that make them sit like rocks, and the swarrico seating position, I have to say, I'm kind of spoiled. I do have a Bobobie Weylin that can kind of sit, but he's got round literal balls for hips and it makes it difficult for him. I don't really do anything with him anymore because he's too hard to pose. My other hard to pose dolls, like my MSD Dollzone girl got sold. Since most of the time they are Sitting on a shelf, when I'm not playing with them-- sitting is a necessity. If they have to stand (prone to falling) or lie down, I can't have them on display, which kind of takes away the fun.

    9. I prefer dolls that can stand but can't sit to dolls that won't stand. It drives me mad. But, to answer your questions:

      1. Do you have a doll that can't sit up? Did you contact the company? Does it bother you?
No, I don't. But I've had one of the SH EIDs (remember that only those won't sit; the model body sits perfectly) and I could stand it because they could sit if against a wall, and I never sat them if they weren't agains something.

      2. If you don't, what would you do if you got a doll like this? Do you think it's a problem? If I had a doll that couldn't sit, of course it IS a problem and a desing flaw in the body. What I would do depends on the doll. If I could put the head on a different body, I would right away! If I couldn't, in case I liked the doll to bits it would stay with me; if no, off to the marketplace it goes. Sorry, but I don't pay $800 for a doll which wouldn't sit unless it's absolutely breathtaking.

    10. I can't stand it! Like when I was younger I kept trying to get them to balance and just got fustrated. I guess it's just a matter of what you do with your dolls. Like some people just have them for display and some dress them and mess with them

    11. I don't have a single doll that can sit up. I just deal with it. I mean, they're 70 freaking centimeters tall! Their legs are looooong. If they were sitting, it would have to be on the corner of a shelf with their legs dangling. Sitting down on anything else would make them take up way too much space. Even if I try to sit one of them up on my dresser and have them lean back against the mirror, their legs stretch so far that their feet dangle over the side. I much prefer to just have them standing. So the sitting thing doesn't bother me. What bothers me is the fact that a couple of them can't pose their arms well, either. XD But I essentially buy them for their pretty faces, so if all they can do is stand there like.. well, dolls, then I'll live.

    12. I have a doll that won't sit up properly - a JID Tatiana. However I think that her body and face is absolutely beautiful, and that fact completely outweighs something like being able to sit unaided. If I prop her up against something, she sits fine. I see it as a minor problem.
I have other dolls that have super amazing posing skills, those you can just plonk down and they sit properly - but that specific type of doll didn't come as a Tatiana!

    13. 1. Do you have a doll that can't sit up? Did you contact the company? Does it bother you?
I have, yes. Because it's a flaw in the sculpt, not a flaw in that particular doll that none of the other have, there's no point in contacting company.

      2. If you don't, what would you do if you got a doll like this? Do you think it's a problem?
Fix it. Like Rosslyn mentioned, usually it's just a hip socket that come down too far in the front and is an easy fix. Sometimes it's just that the slot where the elastic comes out doesn't go down far enough an gets pinched. Both are easy to correct, and I've never understood why companies don't just fix the flaw in their bodies. It's not like they wouldn't notice.

    14. I don't have a doll that cannot sit on its own yet and I would not want one in the future. I like doll that have a decent range of motions. Mods/suedes can fix only to a current point and if the doll can't even sit on its own without having more work add on to it, I might as well just try to find a better body for it.

    15. That isn't true. Suede certainly doesn't help much, but a simple mod can make it perfect. Any doll can be a champion poser with a little work. I used to be very particular about which bodies I bought, and one of the things I looked at on company photos was if the doll was leaning back while sitting. It used to be a deal-breaker. Now that I know how to fix it, it isn't a problem. It's well worth the time and effort if everything else about the doll is exactly what you want.

    16. Oh, I didn't know that... Thanks for sharing! I'll keep it in the back of my mind when I'm thinking of buying another doll =D

However, I still find it difficult to spend hard earned money on a doll that can't sit without any additional work. I don't know how to mods them myself, so I might have to send them off, which I find difficult after all the wait I already did. Plus, the cost of shipping back and forth, then the commission price itself...*_*

Lastly, maybe other will think differently, but I feel that a doll that can't sit by itself lack pride from its maker. The artist/company who created it is not giving it their all, and knows it too. That's a big turn off for me. If I'm really desperate for that particular head sculpt, I'll hybrid it. But otherwise, the doll is a no-no for me.

    17. 1. Do you have a doll that can't sit up? Did you contact the company? Does it bother you?
I have one that has to vulture slouch, but he lounges like a freakin' champ. Lounging is usually easier and looks better. I didn't contact the company, as I got it second hand. The body in question is an Fdoll body, and actually..it doesn't bother me. It's just one sort of another aesthetic for me.

      2. If you don't, what would you do if you got a doll like this? Do you think it's a problem?
Well, seeing as the personality I wrote up for the character is a lazy beach bum..it's not a problem for me. I'd probably just work with it and rework the character to be honest. I'm flexible like that. XD

    18. My BBB Elfkin can't sit up without his arms stretched out behind him to support himself. Sure, it's a tad irritating, but it doesn't bother me too much. He was cheap (about $90 I believe) and there are lots of things I DO love about him. Posibility isn't huge on my priority list, I care about sculpt much more.

    19. I can completely understand the view of people who sell dolls because they don't sit/stand/pose well, but I'm one of those people who doesn't mind too much.

I do have some dolls who aren't awesome sitters, or who need to slouch, but I think how terrible I am at posing them (I'm just awful at it!) plays a part in that too.

    20. I think it depends on how attached you are to the doll in question. Chaeri can sit unaided on a level surface, but if it's slanted backwards the tiniest bit she'll topple over backwards because she's a bit head-heavy (she's got about the same proportions as a BBB Isabella). But she poses and stands like a dream and I'm willing to live with a little tip-overness.
