Why do people put up with dolls that can't sit up?

Jun 1, 2010

    1. All this conversation has done is make me want to get out my new boy and snuggle him to death. He maybe be a leaner but I <3 him. :D
Though my iplehouse babies annoy the crap out of me. They're designed poorly and I Will get them fixed. Unlike my aria doll there is nothing about their body sculpt that makes me want to keep it. other than the impossible to match resin color.

    2. I do find it a tad annoying when my dolls don't sit up straight and I have to flex the torso joint to get the appearance that they are. It seems rather simple to me that a doll should hinge enough at the hips to form a 90 degree angle, and stay there! I also find it annoying if the doll clothing gets in the way so much that the doll can only pose standing or reclining. I understand if the heavier bodies require a bit more finessing to get into a pose, but when the clothing precludes even that .... AAAAAARRRRGH!

    3. 1. Do you have a doll that can't sit up? Did you contact the company? Does it bother you?

All of mine can sit, but some naturally lean forward or back a bit. Also, sometimes tight pants interfere with their sitting ability.

      2. If you don't, what would you do if you got a doll like this? Do you think it's a problem?
I wouldn't really care. They can always just lean against something.

    4. Do you have a doll that can't sit up? Did you contact the company? Does it bother you?
I do have a doll that doesn't sit up well, yes. Alistair, my Dream of Doll Elf Kirill, constantly wants to fall back. I did not contact the company because I purchased him secondhand, right here on DoA. He's a great doll. He has nice big feet, a fantastic facial sculpt, rotating hips, pointed ears...I adore him. But his refusal to sit up straight drives me nuts. The problem is in his back joint, so that may mean that sueding may help. If it doesn't I'll just suck it up, because I love Alistair to bits.

    5. So far I've been lucky, but I do agree that it's ridiculous if a multi-hundred-dollar doll can't even sit up straight. I'd be pretty upset if I got one that couldn't.

    6. I had a Dollzone event doll baby dragon girl. She was like a mermaid in that she had a human torso but a tail with tiny clawed feet instead of legs. She couldn't sit or stand because of the way she was designed. Her joints just didn't account for it. I could have displayed her in a glass bowl, and I considered getting her a human body so she could pose more, but I finally sold her. I didn't enjoy her because of her lack of posing ability. Also, with the body blushing on her tail I was afraid to touch her because I didn't want to ruin her painting. And now that I've sold the dragon, I am looking to purchase a BJD with legs and the ability to sit. ;)

    7. My LM Little Harmony boy has some trouble sitting straight. He doesn't lean forward very well, and half the time even trying to get him to stand means I have to fiddle with his torso. He leans backward incredibly far, but can't really lean forward much unless I want to show the world his lovely inner stringing. But what he can't do, he makes up for in prettiness at least. It's not annoying enough for me to get rid of him. I couldn't imagine doing such a thing.

    8. I do have one doll who really can't do much bit lie there, my Glorydoll Mitsuki. To be honest, yes, sometimes I do wish he could at least sit properly without some type of chair to hold him up, but at this point I've just accepted it as part of who he is. I wanted his body because he was one of the VERY few short boys I could find (in the 55cm range) at the time, and it was so quirky which suited the character I had planned perfectly. The ordering process was a bit of a nightmare, and I don't think Glorydoll really stuck around for much longer after I finally received him, so there wasn't much point in contacting the company as I doubt they would have done anything anyway.

I can see how this would be very frustrating for someone who likes to take a lot of photos or totes their doll around a lot, but for me, I'm happy letting him just sit there in his little chair. Sometimes I wish he could stand without his legs completely giving away as I have all of my other dolls in stands and he's the only one in a chair, but it's a minor complaint. Ultimately I got him for his gorgeous face sculpt and petite build. Because Glorydoll is no longer around, I'm not willing to sell him or hybrid him.

    9. It would frustrate me if mine couldn't sit because that's how I like to display them. But not being able to sit while wearing tight pants made sense when I realized how much the leg joint changes and elongates when sitting. The pants need to be created with that in mind somehow.

    10. A couple of my big boys are more leaners/loungers than sitters. But they're all amazingly solid standers. I think most of it is the clothing hindering them rather than any sort of flaw with their construction. I have different requirements for different dolls. I've realized over the years that I'm more concerned with aesthetics than posing. I can forgive an awful lot if I think the doll is beautiful!

    11. My Impldoll model boy body couldn't sit but posed amazingly well in all other ways. I modded his hips, and now he can sit.

I think a doll should be able to do basic poses--sit, stand, touch their face, kneel--unaided and without looking stiff or awkward or having joints popped out. If they can't do these simple things, I don't want them. I'll either mod them or sell them in time.

    12. My DollsTown girl, Fawn, is on the older body and, thanks to the floppy knee/leg joints, tends to fall over unless shes leaning back against something when sitting - and can't stand at all without some kind of support (like crutches!) She's so beautiful that I honestly don't care. I've worked her wobbly legs into her character.

She actually poses beautifully - especially for being single-jointed - and probably needs restringing. But nothing's going to help those unstable knee joints of hers. Oh well - it's who she is. <3

    13. I have to suede my two then they can sit better. They can sit the just lean back a bit more. Some people like to mod them or they dont realize they cant sit well until they arrive.

    14. I have one bjd that only likes to sit! LOL

    15. My Sugarable Issac is ridiculously kicky - he can't stand or sit, and even getting his thighs to slot into the hip joints is a struggle. I really do like his sculpt, but man is he frustrating to deal with. I'll probably end up selling him eventually since I can't really see myself enjoying him. :c Though to be fair let me specifiy - he can sit, but only if you like your dolls in the lotus position. xD

    16. My Delf type 2 girl (my Jury '06) can't sit unless I put a pencil or something of similar height under her butt. I guess it's a balance thing. Even then she leans waaay back and looks unnatural. She also can't raise her arms. :/ She stands great though.

I also have one old Volks girl, my old f-12 that won't sit or pose in any way. No matter what.

My best posers have always been Dollzone dolls of any version and my old Volks Suarrico body (on my old f-15).

Yes. It bothers me a lot but it is so difficult to find alternative bodies for heads in my opinion. I begrudgingly live with it.

    17. I never really thought about it. I only have one BJD and he sits perfectly with or without pants. It would definitely bother me if he cannot sit up. However I do have other dolls (not BJD) that should be able to sit but cannot and it doesn't really matter to me. I guess I do see BJDs differently from other dolls and hold them to different standards:)

    18. I have several - I realize I should restring, suede, wire etc but I've not done it yet cause, lazy. I have 2 Iplehouse EIDs (nuff said I do believe), an Impledoll who just slides, and some floppy dolls who simply need restringing.
WHY do I put up w/the Iplehouse ones? Have you SEEN any Iplehouse sculpts? BEAUTIFUL! And they both stand like rocks.

    19. I think this is one of those things you have to overlook or muster up to with ball joint dolls; like a necessary evil..... I have some 'articulated' dolls that sit well but when it comes to my ball joint dolls it's a game of hit or miss, usually more on the miss side. I just recently got up the nerve to hot suede one of my dolls and was surprised that both the doll and myself survived the process! It helps quite a bit with posing in general so now I just have to do it to my other ball joint dolls. Although I haven't tried it, I think adding some weight inside of the leg cavities might help with sitting as they seem to want to fall back if not propped against something simply because of the weight of the torso. I might try some of those real small craft clear bags (like for jewelry merchandising) filled with a touch of craft sand....something I can easily put in the leg cavity, but also retrieve.

    20. Dolls that won't sit unaided do bug me, and I have gotten rid of bodies because of it. There are a few I keep because it's either going to be next to impossible to find a new body that suits, or I like the overall aesthetic too much. (*cough* EID man *cough*) I don't mind it so much in a few of my dolls, because it suits the character that they lounge or need to sit in other ways.

Mostly though, I just consider it a "quirk" with the body, and I live with it. But I am always on the hunt for more doll chairs. XD
