Will SOOM jointed hands fit on other dolls?

Jan 4, 2008

    1. hello, all!

I'm thinking of getting some Soom jointed hands, but i heard that they are very fragile, and it's wrist joint is easily breakable.

so...i wonder how easily it can be broken :?

does some one who own these hands had some problems with them? and is it possible to repair them?

      thank you!

    2. All my boys are wearing Soom hands. They are far far far from fragile! They are very sturdy and quite tightly strung. I love them! The wrist joint doesn't "break" it just comes unscrewed from the hand piece and the rubber cement that Soom uses doesn't hold. They don't "need" to be glued on, but if the rubber cement weakens, you do need to be careful to be aware of it so that you don't lose the hand.

    3. One of my Mecha Angel bods has them. I haven't noticed them being particularly fragile, and if the joint came apart I'd probably just stick it back together with some Gorilla Glue.

    4. I've had the wrist issue as well, (it drives me bananas!), but other than that I haven't found them particularly break-able.

    5. I had the wrist problem on one hand, but Soom emailed me with pix of how to put everything back together and twist the tiny elastic thread. they use scotch tape. and just put the wrist together with the folded tape as a shim to hold it.

      actually works pretty well.

I love the hands for their mobility, but regular Soom hands are more beautiful.

    6. If the jointed hands work the same way as the Sabik Cyborg hand with posable fingers, it can be fixed with a bit of hot glue too. I used to lanch that hand through the room when I changed clothes on my boy, but a bit of hot glue made sure that the hand part went on the wrist part with a snug fit and wouldn't fall or slide off.

    7. Yeah, agreed. They won't /break/. The hand comes off the wrist part easily, but just squirt a little glue in there and you won't be bothered by the problem at all. Just make sure you use glue that can be removed at some point in the future, in case the hand needs to be restrung at some point.

    8. The wrist has a bayonet fitting (like some types of lightbulbs) and just needs to be in the right way. It helps if the elastic is twisted the right way too so it doesn't try to un-screw the wrist. I don't use any glue etc in mine, but they are also not on a doll.

    9. How hard is it to restring them? I would imagine that it would be pretty tedious because of all the small parts. Has anyone had any issues with restringing? How often have you needed to do it?

    10. I don't think restringing the hands will be very easy, it will take some tweezers and patience. I've had my jointed hands for almost a year now, I've recently thought about tightening them a bit but I don't think they are in need of restringing yet.

    11. I've restrung mine, and I've found that a bit of fray-check (or hardened glue) on the end of the elastic is all you need to stiffen it enough to be threadable. Do remember which order the finger pieces go in, though, as I ... um, painted over the markings I'd pencilled on in the modding process and it led to a bunch of stringing and unstringing before I got it right.

    12. I saw the jointed hands on one of the 80cm dolls on SOOM's website and I wanted to add them on Iple House's Akando.. but I want to make sure they fit here. Did anybody try this out?

Is there another place to get jointed hands for a 70cm doll?

    13. The soom hands won't fit well. The ball is too small and the hands look teensy compared to the standard Akando hands.

    14. Wow thats a huge diffrence! I was wondering the same thing. guess the perfect body will never meet the perfect hands :( bumer

    15. I received these hands recently. Both hands are relatively loosely attached to the ball joints and glued with some strange substance.

      Left hand:

      Right hand is somewhat better:

Please note that palms are not turned off, just pulled down.

Is this typical situation or not?

    16. It is. The hands are hollow for stringing, and screw onto the wrist balls. However, the mechanism for the screw is a little loose, and doesn't lock very tightly, which means shifting wrist pose can cause them to come loose.

SOOM uses double-sided tape to make the fit tighter and prevent the hands from falling off, but it sometimes pops loose anyway.

I use a very thin line of PVA glue just around the part where the wrist ball joins the hand to hold it in place - for restringing I peel it off with a fingernail and just unscrew the hand piece.

    17. I found that the wrist fits pretty well as long as you don't have the twist of the elastic fighting against the bayonet style fitting of the wrist attachment. When I got mine, there was no gunk or glue (and I have not added any), but the wrist was loose, however after I twisted the elastic around and attached the hook in the wrist from the other side, the two parts fitted together very well.

    18. Thnk you for the suggestions! I probably will remove the glue because it looks really ugly to me and keeps all the dirt. I will try to fill the hole with PVA.
The hands are strung too tight too because fingers kick constantly, and it's hard to pose them properly. So I can't twist elastic around the hook :( Need to buy longer elastic too.

    19. I agree you should try to remove the glue. When you restring the hands, you can also try painting the sockets of each joint with a little bit (thin layer) of acrylic gloss varnish as a form of sueding to stop the fingers being kicky. Just remember you will need to let the varnish dry for a couple of days at least to let it harden properly.

    20. What aboutt Luts?
