1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Will you choose Chinese BJD company?

Jun 23, 2010

    1. I'm going to be That Guy With The Unpopular Opinion and say I would hesitate to buy a doll from a Chinese company. As someone who got their start in the hobby relatively early, my opinion of Chinese companies was negatively colored by the fact that they were pretty much universally scammers and recasters back then. IIRC there was also a company (or two) that was recasting dolls out of resin that was poisonous to the touch and/or emitting poisonous fumes.

I also can't get past the long-ingrained idea "if the price looks too good to be true, it probably is." It seems that Chinese companies are generally the ones with the low prices, which has just reinforced my opinion, correct or no. I've noticed that sculpts from Chinese companies tend to lack the type of details that I find pleasing, and I'm frequently questioning whether it might be because they're cutting their prices so much that they can't afford it, or if it's because inferior materials were used and wash out fine details. That much is just a matter of personal taste.

This isn't to say "all Chinese companies are scammers" or "all Chinese dolls are poor quality." I'm sure there are plenty of perfectly nice Chinese dolls out there, and a lot of users certainly seem to love them, though I wonder if it's just because of the price tag. If I ever fell in love with a doll from a Chinese company, I certainly wouldn't not buy it just because of where it came from. However, I would do some serious research, and I would probably want to see and hold a doll from that company in person first. I absolutely wouldn't impulse buy. I realize I'm basing my opinion on information that's five years old, but I haven't seen anything to make me feel it's necessary to change it.

(Let's be honest, I probably wouldn't buy a doll from a Western country either. It would be the opposite reason, actually... they're too expensive for the quality.)

TL;DR: No Chinese dolls for me. Might buy one if I loved it and after some serious research.

    2. Chinese dolls are one of the best. I have a Bobobie and a dollzone!

    3. @ aikoe: Guess it's really time for an update...maybe Chinese companies are worth a bit of up-to-date research?

You miss out on so many gorgeous doll sculpts...nowadays there is simply more than just Dollzone and Resinsoul/Bobobie!;)

    4. I've got several Angell Studio, DZ & Dika dolls, a Ringdoll, a Loong Soul w/plans for another, a Dragon Doll, & have plans to get an Illusion Spirit. So I guess I would buy from Chinese companies.

    5. My first and only doll is a Dollzone Feilian. I love her and am very happy with my decision.

I actually never thought of the brands country of origin when I was doll hunting. It never even crossed my mind to consider it. I just wanted to find a doll that I would love.

    6. Just as by any other nation, there are great and not-so-great Chinese companies, but all my dolls are from China (four from Angell Studio, one from Dollzone) and I coulnd't possibly be more satisfied. The quality is great and the prices are reasonable (not to high, not to low). So yes, I would (and I did) choose Chinese company, but before buying, I would try to gather some infirmation about the company itself.

    7. I try not to think about doll origin countries too much. I do have issues with Chinese politics which has nothing to do with dolls (and it totes OT for DoA so that's all I will say) but I have problem with the politics of pretty much every country. I do think these kinds of opinions can bleed over and the effect purchasing choices I make.

I currently have dolls from Chinese companies on my ~dream list~ because I love their dolls and the vision of the artists. In the future I hope I can support both Spiritdoll and Doll Chateau with my purchases. I would point out a few more but honestly, I really don't know where a lot of new doll companies are located! I don't pay that much attention.

edit:Lols, my GF just reminded me I do have a doll from a Chinese artist! I have my LLT Roderich! <3 I really don't pay attention.

    8. To be honest, I don't really mind where the doll is from, so sure, why not from Chinese companies.

    9. How many of you will take dolls from Chinese BJD company?

      Actually, most of my dolls are from China ^^;

Which Chinese BJD company you love most?

      Doll Chateauuuuuu <3

When you decide to take a doll, what's the point you care most?

Aesthetic, definitely. I love Doll Chateau because of how unique they are, there are a couple of DollZone dolls that I really like too.

    10. Totally. I don't care about the country of origin when choosing a doll. My choice is based the sculpt itself, how much I love it and if it's a character based doll then also how well it fits the character in mind, not where it originates from.

I have dolls from ResinSoul, (4 of my dolls so far come from them and I love them immensely) Illusion Spirit, Iplehouse, Doll In Mind, a hybrid who's head comes from Soom and body comes from Dikadoll and plans to get dolls from Fairyland, Souldoll and Doll Chateau in the somewhat near by future along with other dolls from other places. Nothing comes into question when I choose but whether I like the doll in question enough to spend all that money on it. XD

    11. There are a lot of great Chinese doll studios around these days. I own sveral heads by Chinese artists. None of them have bodies yet, unfortunately, but I'm working on it.

My main 'gripe', if you will, with Chinese companies these days, is that so many of them cast ONLY in enviromental resin. Personally, i've decided I really, really don't like enviromental resin for the way it looks, even the more solid types. This is more down to taste, since there's nothing wrong with enviromental resin, per say. It's very colour stable and I really like that it's more eco friendly. But I just can't get used to it.

Chinese companies that consistently put out work I like are Be Yours, Spirit Doll, Another Secret, Oasis Doll, and Nabarro's boys. Ones I would like (if it weren't for only casting in enviromental resin!!!) are CTY, LLT, Camelia Dynasty, Or doll, Nyx doll and Angell Studio (I really like the new Tche)

    12. How many of you will take dolls from Chinese BJD company?
probably one...actually. my answer applies to every BJD companies...

Which Chinese BJD company you love most?
loongsoul doll :) I'm keeping my eyes on them

    13. It seems like Chinese companies are getting a better reputation in the doll industry. A few years back I would've said no to buying a doll from a Chinese company, simply because I didn't like the look of the dolls despite the lower price, but I've recently discovered that there are a lot of emerging companies from China with really beautiful sculpts. I like Asleep Eidolon (obviously!), Beyours, and Oasisdoll the best.

    14. Both of mine are from Chinese companies. Doll-Leaves and Resinsoul. Nothing wrong with it. Nice shipping and the dolls are amazing

    15. China is such a huge place there are all kinds of doll companies, from the big factories like DollZone to tiny ones like or-doll. And yes, there are pirates and scammers too, but those aren't exclusive to China. I'm just happy that we are being able to see some of the dolls that are really intended for the local Chinese market as well as the export market, and that we get to peek at the doll meets that happen in China. There are some truly splendid dolls being made there. (I have several from different Chinese companies, though some lack bodies);)

    16. I think a lot of the perception of Chinese dolls has been due to the fact that most Chinese dolls until recently were also cheap dolls. Low quality had a lot more do to with price than nation of origin. The current generation of higher-end Chinese doll companies can, as far as I've seen, match Korean companies that sell for similar prices. I don't think we have any Chinese dolls in the house (unless my GF has one I'm forgetting is Chinese), but the Angell Studio outfits we have are quite nice.

    17. of course i will choose chinese company. my first doll is from angel of dream, and the quality is very nice and price is reasonable too. and china has a lot of good bjd companies like loongsoul, dollzone etc. i might buy another doll from loongsoul in the future (eyeing Aiwen XD)

    18. I don't care where a doll comes from as long as I like the sculpt (and the company is legit, obviously). If I were into MSDs I'd definitely have a ResinSoul Mei, she's just so cute! :love
At the moment I'm considering a Magical Angel body for one of my floating heads since they pose extremely well.

    19. I haven't used Chinese company yet but I definitely see myself using them on the future. Although their are some negative streotypes, a lot of high quality products are from China (like Kipling).

    20. Yea I tend to like sculpts over country of origin and in fact, I even want a doll from taobao
