WORST Doll Experience EVER

Apr 30, 2012

    1. My worst doll experience happened when I purchased a limited doll head through a proxy I use allot. The head ended up getting lost it never made it in my shipment. It worked out with some minor wrangling they gave me a full refund. It was kind of funny because I had also purchased the limited eyes for that head. I was fortunate to find another head, but it came with the eyes so now I have two sets .

    2. I think my personal worst experience was the first day I had my first doll. I ordered a Bobobie Sprite, from a dealer, so I didn't have much of a wait; everyone on that forum was friendly, letting me know I'd have to tighten the strings when I received him, and explaining exactly how to do it. So I was prepared for that... I thought. I managed to tighten the arms without any problem at all, too! But when it came to the legs... I accidentally let go of one end. And with him not having any S-Hooks, I couldn't restring him in a standard way... I ended up picking up craft store elastic and restringing him with that. (He's finally due to get a proper restringing soon.) After a first day like that, nothing's really rivaled it for me!

    3. The first BJD i got was actually just a head, (of a LingFing) Well, my dog loves fuzzy toys... and i had my wig on my doll on my desk. My dog jumped on my desk, grabs the wig, the head fell out and drop and cracked, thankfull it only broke the head plate, and chipped the faceup. I was mad, but i knew she didnt mean too :(

    4. I have a few things that have happened to me. I think the absolute worst was when my Latidoll L was sent out a second time to a customizer that I liked and I didn't get him back for like 4-5 months. She took on my commission knowing full well she shouldn't have and I was almost in tears because I just wanted my doll head back. I finally got him home, no face up and a full refund.

I finally got my grail doll, a Dollshe Afghan, and when I was prepping her to go out for a face up, I dropped her head and broke part of her ear off. I was so made at myself, but I was able to glue it back. I can't really see the break, so it doesn't bother me anymore.

And finally, I was changing out my DZ Asuras hands and I took an s-hook through my thumb. I started freaking out because I didn't want to bleed all over my doll. Priorities, right? I laugh about it now. Man did that hurt though...

    5. Just recently, I bought a Dollmore Trinity Lumie. She's amazing! But when unwrapping her, I discovered her left foot had chipped around the edge. No big deal; I emailed Dollmore, provided pics, and was told to send the foot back, and they'd replace it (and refund shipping). That was fine, but two days after sending the foot out, I was changing Lumie's eyes and discovered the back of her head and neck was cracked through, from edge to edge! I sort of freaked a bit because Lumie was NOT cheap and she's a limited head. I sent Dollmore another message and more pics, and at first they tried to tell me it was just a seam line. But seam lines don't split apart when pressure is put on them. They finally agreed it was a crack, and it and the chipped foot probably happened during shipping. So, I had to mail Lumie's head back to Dollmore, so they can cast a new one and send it and the foot back to me. It'll be another month or so before she comes back and is in one piece. In the meantime her body is stored away in her carry bag, so nothing ELSE happens to it while I'm waiting. :sweat

Oy vey. Definitely a trying experience, but Dollmore has been wonderful in helping me resolve it. I just want my girl home so I can actually enjoy her!

    6. Wow, some of these stories are terrifying D:. I've been pretty lucky I guess, my worst experience was with other people. It was around this time last year, and I was going to a doll meet. I has my boy wrapped up in my backpack safely. I always carry him this way, and when we got to the meet, everything was fine. But I had a show that night for my school immediately after and I didn't have the time to take him home first. I was there doing the show for about 5 hours, and I kept my bag on me the whole time. But every now and then, I had to check on him and make sure he was okay. And whenever I took him out, I heard "ew, that is so creepy!" The first couple of times, I ignored it, but it really bothered me after a while. I never said anything, and I sure didn't ever bring him back. It was kind of disheartening.

    7. My guy faceplanted on a hardwood floor a month after I got him. I was terrified of his face being damaged, but he's still handsome as ever.

    8. My worst experience would be the time I went to a quite a large doll meet and a girl took my Crobidoll Lance (he was very new at the time there were few crobidolls on the board) and wouldn't leave it alone, even when I kept asking her to. She even told all her friends the Lance belonged to her and tried to argue with me intently when I asked her to give it back. Her friends then tried to call me a thief but thankfully some of the people there eventually got her to back off and she went "i was just kidding anyway". I later heard her whispering to her friends "I'm going to steal that Lance from her later."

Never went to a meet-up there again but her behaviour was by far the worst.

    9. Oh my God Adae, I would have flipped the hell out. That is not okay. I do not blame you for not going back. I would of gotten their pictures and put a warning out to people in the area. Just thinking of them trying to do that to someone else makes my stomach turn. But then again, they probably would have retaliated, because it's obvious that group is immature and dishonest. Things like that are the biggest reasons why I don't bring small dolls to meet ups and usually only go with friends so we can look out for each others dolls. Situations like the one you went through, are scary. I'm glad you didn't lose your boy.

    10. To be honest my worst worst exp not that i got over it when my new iplehouse sera fell on the floor when i was posing her for some reason so yea i lucky had tiny scratch and was wearing wig phew and the floor was with carpet rug.

    11. I would've told them: "I'm going to sue you for attempted theft." and see how they liked that. If it was me and someone tried to do that to one of my dolls...Well I'm thankful the girls from my meetup group would back me up...And my mom would've probably made 'em wish they had never come...(She takes me to the meet ups and hangs out there too so yeah)

    12. Luckily, I've only ever owned one doll and I didn't have any scary experiences with her. But reading some of these stories about people attempting to steal dolls and such is so disheartening. I can't understand why people are the way they are sometimes. It shouldn't be shocking to me anymore, but it still is...blegh!

    13. My cringe-o-meter went off the charts reading these stories! Why do people try attempt stealing dolls? Just why ;_;

    14. Before I bought my own doll, I was allowed to borrow my friends LTF DES for a week. Before the yosd, I had borrowed her Dollzone Lola. So I was less afraid, but still very careful when handeling the dolls. This was to see if bjd's would be something for me in the first place. So there I was, gently playing with the LTF and suddenly her hand came of! My heart dropped and later I noticed the magnets. My friend had forgotten to mention that LTFs come with magnetic hands and feet. -.- Not something as horrible as the stories I've read in this thread, but as a noob it scared the bejeezus out of me.

For my own collection I have mauled a practise head, butchered a wig or two, pinched myself with needles, dealt with the hell of hoove blushing + removal + stringing, wrongly superglued magnets, accidentally scratch the resin (and restored the damage). I also ruined a pair of eyelashes that did not belong to me (and replaced those of course). Lastly, I didn't see that spider in the pretty plant were I wanted to pose my doll on and she fell and I was able to snatch her by the wig before she hit the concrete thanks to those dolly superpowers we get. :p

    15. I've never really had any bad experiences since I have been in the hobbie.
A few months ago, I tried to restring my IH JID Tania ... BIG MISTAKE. If someone warned me about how hard it is to restring a JID, I'd never do it! Haha. She was left unstrung for about a week because she frustrated me so much. I ended up with so many blisters and marks on me. So many things thrown at a wall. So much blood, sweat and tears shed!
I did eventually get her strung... Then she became kicky! Noooooooooooo....

    16. I think my worst experience has been with the Soom Faery Legend dolls. First when I got my Mixi that day I took her to work with me because I was so enchanted. I worked at a video store at the time and hid her beneath our desk. My husband came to visit me and didn't know she was under the desk. He brushed by her and she fell onto the hard concrete floor. One of her wings shattering! I was devastated and he felt awful. Luckily Soom took pity on me and recast me some new wings, which I paid for, but I am so scared of breaking them that they are still stored away in a box. Then there is the incorrectly glued in magnets, I had to get a new chest piece for one doll because I couldn't get them out. I really should stop buying them, but they are too cute :)

    17. I have a new poor experience to add. This one, like all of them, happens to be... my fault. Hah.
But I much prefer that I am the one to blame instead of someone else. Poor experiences with other people would make me feel out of control, and I'd resent the dolls for those sorts of memories. If it's just me, well, I can forgive myself! Hahaha.

My KDF Bory was yellow-green. No, he wasn't that mellow cream Luts NS settles into over the span of a couple years. He wasn't the sort of yellow that can still be regarded as a natural skintone most dolls acquire with age. He was radioactive, neon, glowing yellow.
Of course... what can you expect? He was my first doll. It was less a sign of wear and tear and more a sign of being such a well-loved doll. He suffered through all my experiments. He must of had twelve faceups over his lifetime. He went to every meet. I traveled with him everywhere. So the fact that his yellow was becoming a green wasn't a surprise to me, though I did feel awful about it. By the time his condition reached critical green, I had several other dolls in my collection, and they were all better off than he was because of the things I had learned from him.
      I wanted to fix him.
It was time for another experiment.
My roommate's KDF Hodoo was in a similar state, as they were from the same order and they were both our first whole resin dolls, and we did everything dolly together in those days. She's always been the brave one, so when I showed her a fantastic tutorial here on DOA on dyeing our resin kids back to a peachy color, she jumped right on it. Unafraid, she prepped the dye mix -- a blood red mixture -- and unstrung her Hodoo, and sank him into the boiling depths of the pot. We were witches in front of a couldron, restoring the youth of an aged doll. And, just like magic, he turned out wonderful. A much warmer peach than Luts' NS, but still a lovely color. He had a new lease on life!
I had to try it. I had visions of my beautiful first doll no longer looking like a creature from Mars. So, a week later, we prepped the same mixture and I unstrung my dolls. Oh, right -- I was going to dye my precious CH Hani, circa 2007, who had yellowed properly and not turned into a miniature green alien. I figured she would appreciate a dip in the cauldron too.
I dyed my Hani first. She turned out wonderful. She's now the skintone she ought to be. And it was so easy!
Then I tried my Bory, and that was when things went sour.
For the most part, his body dyed evenly. I wanted a paler peach so I kept his torso and limbs in the bath for only a few seconds at a time. When it came to his head, I did the same process...
      only...
his face wasn't taking to the dye.
I tried a little longer. The back of his head was peachy, but his face was still yellow green. I tried his headcap -- same thing. It was a partial peach and partial green catastrophe. I tried leaving the head in longer -- 30 seconds turned into a minute, and a minute turned into a minute thirty seconds. But his face would not dye. Nothing was happening. And I couldn't cover it with a faceup.
Ugh! I was so disappointed. I put him in a bag and in a box and I never restrung him. It's been eight months. I've since reshelled the character. I've been feeling pretty terrible about it.

In hindsight, I know what I did wrong... all those faceups.
See, I used magic eraser to remove faceups. And magic eraser is an abrasive. Over time, I must have sanded his face down. I did notice with my dolls from back then that after their first faceups they tended to have a lighter color face than the rest of their head, but I never thought it was because of the magic eraser. Because I was practically polishing his face with all that magic eraser use, he did not dye evenly.
It was good that I took a long break from him, though. I've developed a plan to fix him. I'll sand him and redye him, and see how he turns out. I'm sure a good sanding will fix my mistake.
As for me and Mr. Magic Eraser... well, we aren't as close as we used to be. I use other methods to remove my doll faceups now. And I'm pretty good at faceups now, thanks to all that practice, so the times I feel compelled to redo a faceup are very very few and far between.
Still... that was quite an unpleasant experience. :T

    18. I guess I haven't had it too bad. The worst experience I ever had was buying my first doll from LUTS. This was when they were behind, and it took over 3 months for her to arrive. They'd specified a specific set of eyes on the listing, and when she arrived, those weren't it. I was so disappointed, as she looked different, very "off," (they're unique eyes,) and I couldn't tell why until I realized. I asked for an exchange, and they asked for better photos, asked for me to wait 3 times, each time I did, and had to repost, but they said they'd send the new eyes. I'm still waiting. XD It's funny, now, but at the time, yes, it was the worst thing that had happened.

    19. I haven't had it too bad, either. Interestingly, my worst experience was pretty similar to gumtree's, above, in that it was an order from Luts and had to do, at least partially in my case, with the eyes.

My grail BJD, Luts SDF Karis, arrived the first week in December (just about four weeks ago). When I opened his box, removed the top pillow, and saw his face for the first time... well, to be honest, I absolutely hated him. He looked nothing like his promo photos. First, Luts painted my boy's faceup so that he looks like he has dark, sunken, insomniac circles under his eyes, and his eyebrows are way too low and close to his eyelids (whatever, fine; it gives him character, I suppose, but it makes him look like an angry 40-year-old, not a sensitive, pensive 20-year-old). Second, Luts had also given him the most lifeless, dull, flat, yucky gray eyes -- might as well have been pebbles off the damn ground. After so much anticipation (and so much money!), I was just incredibly let down and had to cry for a a few minutes after I deboxed him. Fortunately, I had several spare glass BJD eyes on hand and quickly found a pair of brown ones that got him close to the look I had originally hoped for. He still has the dark circles/too-much-pigment-accentuating-the-eye-sockets thing, so he doesn't look much like his promo photos; but at least now I don't totally hate him. I will probably eventually find someone to give him a faceup closer to the way he looks in his promo photos, but for now he's all right.

But overall, man... talk about a $700 letdown! :(

    20. My worst experience was with a purchase I made... the doll never showed up, and I lost the money I spent on it because I was jerked around for so long that, by the time I went to open a Paypal dispute, the 45 day period had been and gone. So now I have no refund, and no doll. Close to having no faith in the marketplace here after that, too, but a couple of really nice local sellers have made it okay.
